Why would you use คือ the first time and then เป็น? The sentences are equivalent right, so shouldn't you use the same word for each?

  2. I have Thai Netflix but many of the shows and movies have subtitles that are different from what is actually spoken. I'm looking for shows on Youtube where they are (close to) exact.  I've found these 3 so far...know of any others?

    Club Friday Show-celebrity interviews

กบนอกกะลา-documentaries on various subjects. I really like this one but newer episodes don't have subtitles anymore

หัวใจใกล้กัน- old show about parenting issues.

If you get a letter from the school explaining / verifying you stated reason for absence explaining you take private-lessons and can continue where you left-off PLUS enter by land, PLUS have 20K Baht in cash or travelers checks PLUS proof of where you stay, I don't think you would have trouble upon-returning.   Throw in some pics of the wedding on your phone (with you in them) for good measure.

I'll look into it some more. I have a few months to decide. Thanks.

I assume you are well under 50 years of age, and not looking to work in Thailand. That does not leave you with a lot of options for long term stay. With care, you can probably get a couple of years from tourist entries, but it is precarious. The Thailand Elite visa is a great solution apart from the sticker shock.

I will be 44 later this year. I can do an Edu visa for 3 years (I believe) then I'll have to do tourist visas for  a couple years until I can do a retirement visa at 50.

  5. My school got my letter from the MOE and now I have 2 options: pay an agency 7900 baht to arrange everything or do it by myself. The idea of having a Thai drive me 14 hours through the night (possibly in heavy rain) makes me feel a bit nervous so I'm looking into doing it myself but I haven't been able to find much info on it. How difficult is the process for a newbie?  I have  a USA passport, if that matters.

As I understand it the process is: Fly to Udon and then take a bus or shuttle to Nong Kai. From there there's a bus that will take me across the bridge to Laos. I'll need to fill out a form and pay $35 US for a Lao visa which will let me stay there for 30 days. Then I go to the Thai embassy and give them my letter from MOE and I can come back the next day to get the visa. I'm not sure where to go at the embassy though. I gave my school 16 passport photos to do the application. Do I need any more for the embassy in Laos?

Can I use Thai baht for the taxis and hotel in Laos or will I need to change it To kip?

Is this right? Am I missing anything? Any other advice for a first timer? Thanks.

There are quite a few tongue twisters, including the one above, in this song:

  7. If it took you a year to read a stop sign then maybe it would have been better to give his method a try.

Yeah, I'm sure you learnt to read Thai in three weeks. Most Farangs I know don't even know where Krungtheep is.

I do learn three languages though, but that was 40 years ago, verstanden?

Yeah, I'd say roughly 3 weeks is about right. One week to learn the alphabet, one week to learn the consonant classes/tone rules/special rules, and one week of practicing. I couldn't read much after a few weeks but I could sound out easy signs like ยา, หยุด, กาแฟ etc.

I agree that most Farang don't know where Krungthep is but I don't see how that's relevant. Being able to read หยุด at all puts your knowledge above most Farang, but it taking you a year puts you near the bottom of students who have learned to read. I was merely suggesting that there might be more efficient methods available.

I've also studied 3 languages in my lifetime...is that supposed to be impressive? I certainly don't think so. Comprende?

  8. In the past I've used a cheap Nokia phone and bought 12call cards at 7-11 to top it up. I just bought my first smart phone and I'm overwhelmed with all the choices. Can I get prepaid data cards at 7-11 or is it better/cheaper to sign up for a plan? Some say AIS is good some say get DTAC instead. I'll be using it almost entirely in Pattaya and Bangkok. Is one better than the other?

If I get a monthly plan, then how big would I need? My rough guess is I'll spend an hour or less per week on the phone and maybe 10 hours per week on the internet with occasional heavy usage when I'm away from home for a few days. I think I'd prefer a prepaid option if it's as easy as going to 7-11 24 hours/day to fill it up in minutes so I can keep track of my usage. With monthly plans it's really expensive if you go over, right?

Thanks to anyone who will take the time to answer. :)

  9. On June 20th I go in to renew my type o visa (Thai family). I would like to travel a week or two after we submit the forms. Will it be possible to get a re-entry permit during this time? I've lived here for a long time and left the country many times but I've never tried to do it during the 30 day period between when my 1 year extension of stay expires and I get the new one.
