  1. For as long as there is a Pattaya Forum, there will be the " bashers" and the proud members of the " Pattaya Defence League ". Each to their own, all arguments have their bases in some form of truth, however, it is always quite noticeable that the "bashers" are not usually from the area, or have visited the core of the city once or twice and found it not to their liking.

Couldn't give a monkeys, or indeed get offended by people's perceptions based on ignorance and limited experience; however the "everyone who likes it is a pervert crowd " are a tad trying. Pattaya is not just Soi Six or Walking Street and those who think it is, should really come down, meet some of the actual people who are proud to call it their home, before they spout the usual old hogwash.

Urmm, not in my case. I have been here in Pattaya 5.5 years and been fully involved with the community in various ways, including 3.5 years in a local Rotary Club. Haven't been to WS for at least one year, and only ever walked down soi 6 once.

  2. I'm an expat been here 5years. Just sold my business and returning home next month. Fed up with the corruption, bad staff, idiot low class tourists that seem to be coming here more and more. Always being classed as lower than the Thai's. Thailand for the Thai's mentality, standing for the K when I want to watch a film. Living in a third world country who thinks its a first world country.

Yes I am pissed off as you can tell and getting out while I remain sane!!

Sorry that it all went pear-shaped for you, I really am. What sort of business did you try? You sound bitter and twisted but hope that once you get away, you can recall the good times you did have here and not dwell on the shortcomings of the LOS that you had no control over.

I always thought that trying to run a business here would be a 'make-or-break' sort of call for me so when I got bored after 10 years of being a 'resident tourist' (1980-1990), I bailed and set up camp in the US and then Brasil. I have latterly returned to Thailand and making a home in the northeast boonies while retaining a holiday home in Pattaya. I think I may try some sort of business up there, to relieve the boredom but I think one needs big balls and deep pockets to try and make any legitimate business a success in Pattaya.

I owned a magazine and graphic design business here. I have actually done pretty well considering most leave here after losing thier shirts. I will be going home with over double the money I invested here, and that excludes all my living costs whilst here as I lived off the income pretty well here. Also paid all my company and personal taxes.

Just fed up with all the other crap!!!

  3. Maybe the old boys where looking to take home a thai boy, maybe this time the choose the wrong one. :D 71-80 years old where they go at that time in the morning around pattaya.

Shame that you accuse two old age pensioners of paedophilia with no evidence of any wrongdoing and then fail to condemn a cowardly attack.

I din't accuse the old boy of been paedophile, maybe they where looking for adult boys. :o ha,ha,ha

You actually think you are funny? You are NOT. <deleted>.

  5. Sorry Howard, I did not realise you are the guy on the TV that runs the News channel. I used to like your news broadcasts, much better than other news channel in my opinion.

I understand now that setting up of the new News channel is taking up much of your time. I am impressed you find enough hours in the day to keep the web site up to date at all.

Don't tell me you thought he spent all his time hanging around in walking Street in his 'rentaplod' outfit :D

    post-39406-1212219425_thumb.jpg

    :o

Well, at least Howard can be seen around as a VTP. There are also some guys from another famous local network 'active' as a VTP, but they can only be seen if there is some kind of celebration and of course only on their own News Channel.

NC is not a VTP he is a FVP based in Soi 9. Different force. Otherwise everything else you say is agreed on!

    ...

  6. The expat clubs get boring after a few visits in my opinion.

There are 6 Rotary Clubs in Pattaya. They have weekly meetings and get involved with many projects in the local community. If you are bored then this may help you in getting more active and also meet new friends,

My Rotary Clubs sit is www.rotary-pattaya.org have a look at the site and if you want to visit we meet every Thursday night at 18.45 at the Amari Hotel north Pattaya. Send an email to [email protected] if you are interested in coming along.

  7. Been in the web business a long time and for a site like this to receive 250,000 hits in one day is highly unlikely. If you did receive that many hits then it could explain why your site was slow to load (unless of course you're on your own dedicated server...even then I can't see 250,000 hits being accurate).

    Here is the proof.

Hits and visitors are separate things. The important stat is the number of UNIQUE visitors you get. Your daily visitors are around 2000, not bad for a start up site. You need to get your google ranking at at least a 3 then you can charge reasonable amounts for advertising. Presently your site hasn't been ranked by google.

(come on mark lets go out and have fun one last time)

Really the above post just sums up why he died IMO. Don't want to be horrible to anyone, but it does make you think.

  10. 105 for me just has too many ads and too many Howard voice overs!!!

The same could be said about a number of magazines that publish in Pattaya??

I am sure that you understand the concept of advertising and how it generates revenue for your business in order for it to survive John??

Most of our advert breaks are no more than 1:30 minutes, which I dont think is too bad really???

Don't take it personally Howard. But as you know many have said the same about your station and it's true. 96 uses many different voice overs for both announcements and ads and that keeps the listener interested.

Your station plays good music and is professional, however there is too much of you Howard, thats all I mean. I am sure deep down you agree with me on this?

  11. 96 ,103, 105, 106 All local

    My wife discovered 89.5 FM

Western popular music 24 hours/day - generally speaking playing more up to date than the ones quoted above, but no hip hop or club. Very good alternative to 96 , which is now my next favourite.

Also very powerful transmitter - I can still receive it as far away as Sri Racha.

Thai DJ's but they don't speak much, and usually back to back music. In fact less disruptions than the other farang stations.

    Give it a try.

I've just discovered this station. It is pattaya.com radio station. It plays nearly non stop English music, hardly any ads. Very good I will say, and really good selection of music. 105 for me just has too many ads and too many Howard voice overs!!!

It is Thai however so the ads and announcements are in Thai. But there is so few of them that it isn't a problem.

  12. I didn't know this guy and I am sorry about his death. But this should be a lesson to all. Don't ride your motorbike when pissed up, and always wear your crash helmet.

  14. As someone who used to own a car rental company I feel I can answer this question.

Firstly I find the 20,000 Baht a very high deposit. Most companies will take 5,000 Baht cash deposit.

Secondly the majority of car rental companies in Thailand do not take credit cards as most companies are privately owned and small concerns. They will only deal in cash.

You're wrong about foreigners not getting credit cards here. I know several people who have them and my own bank even approached me to see if I wanted one. However I believe you must have a work permit to qualify.

  15. intersting! Before posting I checked all pancake recepies I could find just to make sure...none of them mentioned baking powder. Now - and just as a matter of fast and not attempting to rub even more salt into your bleeding yank wounds :D - I use almost always recepies from European sources, unless I venture into something typical American such as Cajun food.

This is just because I try to cook as original as possible with fresh ingredients only (except for canned tomatoes, there are otherwise no tomatoes of the required quality available in Thailand) and pancakes were made in Europe before America has been discovered and baking powder was invented.

I can rant for hours on this subject...... :o

Let me say this one more time, raro. There is no "right and wrong", and no "superior vs. inferior" with regard to recipes for food. It is a matter of individual, and, in many cases, cultural taste. You like European recipes? Fine. Enjoy. I like American recipes. There is neither need nor justification for a display of arrogance about it.

The word "yank" is mentioned and those sensitive souls are out again. Becareful raro.

  16. Oh dear, sorry you find it tiresome. You a yank by any chance?

Yes. So what? Your comment had nothing to do with the quality of food and were superflous to your other comments, which by the way were informative.

The "typical Yank" comment was off the mark.

There are some sensitive souls over on the dark side. As a relative newbie to the dark side I guess I need to watch what I say. People on the light side appear much more relaxed about these things. :o

  17. I am finding this post a little hard to write as Peter (partner in this place - Crossroads) is a friend of mine. However I already told Peter last night about my views on Crossroads Fine Dining.

I went there last night with my partner. The place is extremely small and the lighting is awful. They have one tube in the ceiling which was giving off a blueish tint and not really suiting my eyes. It was also very hot inside.

The menu is very small, no more then about ten items. We both ordered the one of the two pasta dishes. The menu said it came with salad and bread. There was some confusion in the kitchen as I ordered the same item twice as we both chose that item. My partner was called into the kitchen to explain what I wanted. He explained to them we both wanted the same dish, then they understood. The pasta arrived, and had no salad and no bread. I started to eat the pasta, which was served with 4 slices of cooked carrot which I found a little strange. In the bottom of both of our plates was a lot of water where the pasta had not been drained. This put me off eating the pasta. I only eat about half of it. My partner eat it all but didn't enjoy it. As we finished the meal, Jeffery the American partner noticed we had no salad and told the cook to get us some. I said no as we had finished the meal.

There was one other person in the restaurant who was eating fish and chips. I didn't like the look of the fish or the chips. As an Englishman the dish did not look like it should do to me. The chips where very thick and didn't look cooked to me. The man eating the dish left a lot of the chips on the plate so I guess they weren't that tasty?

I will not return again and I told Peter that also. My partner also stated that he didn't like the food and suggest he could cook better!

As for the American owner/partner he was very chatty and a little opinionated. Dare I say a typical yank??? Liked the sound of his own voice!!! I have met him twice now and heard some of the same stories last night to what I heard on the first meeting.

I hope this doesn't sound too negative, but it is my honest assessment of how I found the place. I certainly wouldn't call it fine dining. Sorry.

  18. Sorry if he is innocent - but i am sure i read somewhere that he earned his miiion by the Scotish affair and thats why he left scotland and ended up in thailand.

Ok tell me he isnt from Edingurgh/Scotland

You're getting confused with other 2 people in this case who set up Kevin. They are from Scotland and left under a cloud.

Kevin is innocent as far as I am concerned. I have read a lot about this case recently and the whole thing sticks to high heaven. The two other people involved one of them I know pretty well and I am keeping my distance from him now. I want nothing to do with them or their businesses. Kevin is fortunate in one respect he didn't end up dead in a hotel room with his finger hacked off like the other one did.

Kevin could of skipped this country many times, but he didn't. He returned always, has just invested money in a new club and was starting to develop a new condo project. He knew he was innocent and was sure the court would not convict him due to the evidence. How wrong he was. I feel very sorry for the guy and smuggling in a few cigs doesn't warrant a death sentence as some seem to be saying.

As said before Kevin could do himself a lot of good by admitting his guilt. However he isn't guilty and therefore will not admit it. All credit to him, if the shoe was on my foot I'd admit to it and get myself home. How the one who wears a dress and his partner sleep at night is beyond me.

  19. On the Nernplubwan Soi 47, this is the soi on the left side coming from the Sukhumvit just before the Crossroad Bar, 150 m on the right side there is a new small restaurant called Crossroad Restaurant, breakfast, lunch and dine, small card with : fish & chips, hamburgers, spagetthi...prices between 100 an 150 Thb and some thai food on demand, as it was in the afternoon I only drank a beer, rather expensive 60 Thb for a small Leo, the owner, an american, seems to be the partner of the owner of the Crossroad Bar.

Just before this restaurant there is a new building, with swimming pool, in construction, according to the local rumours, the owner is the previous owner of the Dao Cafe and is intend to open a duplicate of his previous business.

I finally found this place. It is about 100 yards from Nernplubwarn. What is tricky is that you have to bear RIGHT at the fork in soi 47. I have always gone left there, using it as a connection to Siam CC Road. You can't see this small restaurant from the left fork. It's very small place, with two tables for four on the raised, open platform. There are 3 tables for two at road level, inside a row of plants that line the road. That's it. A total seating capacity of 14.

The great discovery for me (and, I expect, for all other Americans), is that this place has both pancakes and french toast on the breakfast menu; as well as a choice of cheese, western, and spanish omelettes! Find that selection anywhere else in Pattaya!

The cook and waitress, the only employee there, is an Isaan girl named Li. So, if there are more than 3 or 4 people in the place at one time, service may be a little slow. Li is a pleasant girl, with enough English to be understood in both directions. The caveat is that she has just learned how to cook farang food, having been taught by the owner, Jeffrey, when he opened about 2 months ago. Unfortunately, he was not there today. ("He go Pattaya to celebrate Songkran.") So we will have to help here improve her cooking skills. It's a very small kitchen area, with a two burner stove, and a couple of small deep fryers.

Today, I tried the F&C's. The fish, as openly printed on the menu, is local Halibut. So, while not "authentic", it is fresh and flaky fish. The batter was good; but Li didn't have the oil hot enough, so it was a bit more oily than it should be. But still brown and crispy. They make their own FF's from whole potatoes. They were cut a bit too thick, and, as with the fish, the oil was not hot enough, so they were a tad soggy, and not brown, as I like them. But I am hopeful that we can speak to Jeffrey about this, and educate Li rather quickly. I also need to talk to him, as I did to Li, about changing his oil from the heart stopping Palm oil, to soybean, safflower, sunflower, or corn oil Anything but palm! I'm just so dam_n happy to find American food items, particularly for breakfast, that I'm willing to be forgiving and patient with this place.

They also have burgers, bacon and egg sandwiches, BLT's, home fries, and onion rings.

I don't know if the menu will appear to many Brits, or other nationalities. I hope so, because, the more business the better. But you Americans should really give it a try. As I said, we need to be patient, and help Jeffrey develop Li's cooking skills. But I hope you'll help me ensure that we keep these American options available to us. (Yeah, I do have a selfish motivation. This place is exactly 1 km from my front gate! I plan to walk there for breakfast often, now that I've found it.)

Crossroads Fine Dining is a partnership between Peter (UK) of Crossroads Bear Bar and Jeffery (Yank). Jeffery runs the Fine Dining side. You can order food to be delivered to the bar if you are in there or they also do a home delivery service as well.

I haven't eaten there yet, but will be paying a visit tonight.
