  1. Hey folks,

i bought one of those common 3 stage water filter, which comes with a pre-filter(5micron), ion exchange & a carbon.

Then i bought another ceramic (0.3micron) refill because the salesman said it makes the water drinkable.

Now i got 4 filters to put into 3 canisters. Which is the odd one out? Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. Southern violence surges

Yala - A bomb exploded yesterday at a busy market, wounding 28 people, seven of them seriously, while two public school teachers were shot dead in next-door Narathiwat province.

The homemade bomb detonated by remote control exploded at a packed food stall in Muang Yala district.

Police believed a bomber placed the device under one of the stalls on Monday night and waited until customers packed the market before detonating it.

Seven of those hurt were in serious condition, said Pol Lt Col Jeerasit Lomae.

In Narathiwat, two public school teachers were murdered, said Pol Lt-Col Thanapol Meechai.

At least two assailants hidden in the brush stepped out onto a narrow village road in Rueso district and shot them with pistols while they were riding motorcycles home, he said.

The two victims were in a group of six teachers guarded by a village defence volunteer, but they had fallen behind the others, he said.

It is normal practice in the South for teachers to have security escorts to and from school.

More than 2,600 people have been killed in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, and some parts of nearby Songkhla, since the Islamic separatist insurgency flared up in January 2004.

An insurgent suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire with 50 security officers in a longgong orchard in Yala's Yaha district.

It followed a tip-off that about nine armed men had turned up at a local market to buy food and then disappeared into the orchard.

The security patrol later spotted armed men in camouflage uniforms walking in the orchard.

Both sides opened fire and after a brief exchange they suspects retreated into a rubber plantation nearby.

One man identified later as Dorlamae Yasi, 26, was found dead at the scene. An HK-33 rifle and a 30cm PVC pipe containing a home-made bomb were found near his body.

In Narathiwat, police took a member of an active rebel cell to a crime scene to reenact a bomb attack which wounded a police officer in Tak Bai district.

Mahama Madeng, 26, of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil, and five accomplices allegedly planted the bomb which exploded under the pick-up truck of Pol Sub-Lt Seri Hayeeding, a deputy crime suppression inspector of Tak Bai district on Oct 26, 2005.

    The officer sustained shrapnel wounds.

Meanwhile, relatives of three men apprehended shortly after they left the military-run vocational training programme and returned home have asked the provincial courts in Yala and Pattani for their immediate release.

Mayakee Manputae, 23, was arrested by police in Yala on Saturday , while Nisae Hayeetalae, 40, and Abdulroman Dueramae, 51, were apprehended on Sunday in Pattani.

The three men were among participants in the army-supervised vocational training programme for individuals with suspected links to the southern insurgency.

The programme, set to end later this month, is being run at army camps in Ranong, Chumphon and Surat Thani.

The courts in those provinces recently ruled the training was voluntary and participants were free to leave the programme if they wanted to.

The three men left the camp and returned home only to be arrested because they were banned from entering Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla where martial law has been imposed.

The Pattani provincial court will decide today whether to accept for hearing the relatives' request for the release of Mr Nisae and Mr Abdulroman.

The Yala court admitted Mr Mayakee's case for consideration. The policemen who apprehended Mr Mayakee were called to testify.

The Yala court has set tomorrow for the examining of documentary evidence to determine if the police arrest of Mr Mayakee was legal. (Bangkok Post, AP)

  3. Hi motoring folks,

i've just renewed the insurance for my Vigo 4WD doublecab. For the 3rd year, the insurance is 21K + special tax of 795B + 6626B (govt tax). Although vehicle maintenance cost is rather low in LOS, the insurance is quite hefty and hardly changes every year. (Prev year was 22K). Care to comment on yours?

    Cheers!

  4. Right, like you guys are going to quit now??? Heheheh. See you here. :o I'm such an addictive personality................ Only 1/2 hour, this time for sure! Good luck all!

Hi fellow-gamers, i'm back! Hey, people out there, Demodokos, DanaDeLuxe etc, pls say something, or rant about anything or just say hello....

    Cheers!

  5. I had to stop too.

I was spending all my life in there.

I think it is time for someone else to take the lead.

hello #1man, nice to hear from you, you're a worthy opponent. :o

For me, playing games is a form of relaxation from work, but sometimes, trying to beat records can be a little stressful. haha

Anyway, it's time for my vacation in LOS. Cheers!

Narathiwat - A 17kg improvised bomb which had failed to explode was found in Rangae district yesterday. Chalerm Yingkhong of Rangae police said a military patrol found the bomb hidden in a drain pipe on Jarusathian road in tambon Tanyong Limo. A bomb disposal squad was sent to the scene.

On arrival they jammed mobile telephone signals in the area before checking the bomb.

The device had been linked by a wire to a detonation device behind a bush about 100 metres away.

Fortunately, the bomb failed to detonate. It was made of urea fertiliser, petrol and pieces of iron.

Pol Lt-Col Chalerm said it was possible the electrical contact had been damaged by water. This had saved the lives of the government forces targeted by the bomber, he said.

He said there had been reports that insurgents planned to attack security forces in the district during Hari Raya, to celebrate the end of Ramadan, which was on Friday.

In Rueso district, police detained two suspects on a motorcycle after being informed by a local resident that their behaviour was suspicious, said Thanapol Meechai, deputy Rueso police chief.

The man said he had seen the two suspects riding around Rueso town centre several times. About 50 police fanned out around the district and captured the two suspects after a 20-minute chase.

They were identified as Anuwat Kaseng, 17, and Haleng Masong, 29. The two denied involvement in any rebel activities.

They said they were driving around looking for their friends so they could celebrate Hari Raya together.

Pol Lt-Col Thanapol said police did not believe them and sent them for questioning at Ingkhayuthboriharn military camp in Pattani.

  8. Hi lesi,

Welcome. Your English is not bad. This is a gd idea, maybe in the future?

At the moment, i'm still a "lazy gardener" and i've not even bought the seeds yet.

Do you really plant vegetables(chilli, eggplants etc) on all the 10 rai alone without any helpers?

You must be an expert & hardworking gardener. I'm planning to start with a tiny 1 metre square plot first. :D haha

Maybe there are other expert gardeners in the forum will be interested trade seeds with you too?

    Cheers to havearbejde!

  9. Excellent advice from chownah, a master gardener. As a "lazy gardener" myself, who enjoys harvesting but who experiences other garden activities as drudgery. I think my solution is to put aside the idea of building my garden around familiar annuals such as lettuce, spinach, and peas. Are there any perennial vegetables or leaf spinaches that have edible leaves, stems and often other parts that will do well in LOS? How about root vegs like sweet potato, tapioca, potato etc ?? Is tomato a perennial or requite re-planting after a/few seasons of fruit?

  10. Hi folks,

Since there're mini-vans from Khao San Rd to Kan city, are there also mini-vans going from Kan city direct to Khao San rd? It should be faster than a train & without the hassle of stopping at the new Bangkok Noi train station, and from Khao San Rd, i can take a public bus to Mor Chit for a bus to Sutkhothai. Or is it more convenient to take a cab from Bangkok Noi station to Khao San rd? Thanks!

  11. It's been over a year since I travelled between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai by train, but both times the connection was late and I transferred at Bang Sue. The tricky part, as mentioned, is walking over several tracks and then down the 100 yards or so to the other waiting area.

I think it's not only tricky, but slower. Since there're mini-vans from Khao San Rd to Kan city, are there also mini-vans going from Kan city to Khao San rd? It should be faster than a train, and from Khao San Rd, i can take a public bus to Mor Chit.

    Thanks!

  12. I don't know, between the time I spend reading & now playing here...... very scary

    Halydys,

Why scary? Are the games very addictive? Take a break, read the forum, play some games and then go back to your normal routine.... Life's short, play hard!

    Cheers!

    :o

  13. :o

    thanxs for posting .

Welcome, i tot i would be flamed for posting such news. Anyway, it's better to err on caution, esp for those travelling to Hatyai.

    Cheers!

    Busted: Hat Yai bomb plot

By Wichayant Boonchote and Waedao Harai

Security forces have foiled a suspected terrorist plot to wreak havoc in Hat Yai, the commercial capital of Songkhla province, recovering 17 bombs in the city yesterday before they could be detonated.

A bomb disposal unit discovered the 17 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) hidden in two locations in the city.

A security source said five bombs were discovered near a fence of the Prince of Songkhla University on Poonakan road.

  14. Police discover 22 small bombs around Hat Yai

Police yesterday confiscated 22 small home-made bombs planted in downtown Songkhla and near the main gate of Prince of Songkhla University in Hat Yai, a police source said, suggesting that the operation might have been politically motivated.Published on October 7, 2007

Five bombs were placed near the university and 12 near a restaurant in Songkhla, while five were left in a public park in Hat Yai. No details were given.

The bombs were relatively small, without shrapnel or a fuse.

The perpetrator apparently intended to "create incidents" to discredit authorities, said the source.

Hat Yai has been the scene of several bombing incidents, but security officials suspect the devices they found yesterday were politically motivated and not related to the insurgency in the Malay-speaking provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

Explosives used in the three southernmost provinces - frequently for roadside bombing attacks against police and passing military vehicles - are much larger and often loaded with shrapnel material.

Meanwhile, three assistant village chiefs were targeted by suspected insurgents in the latest violence in the deep South, with only one surviving with serious injuries.

Assistant village chief Wae-hama Kahamah, 40, a resident of Tambon Prachan in Pattani's Yarang district, was shot dead just moments after he walked out of the local mosque yesterday, police said.

Eyewitness said Wae-hama, who also served as chairman of the village fund, was killed by a lone gunman who walked up and shot him once in the head before jumping on a getaway motorcycle waiting just metres away.

In Narathiwat, assistant village chief Sorpee Maeroh , 35, of Tambon Bango-stoe in Rangae district, was shot four times as he was riding his motorbike on Friday evening.

He survived but is in critical condition.

In nearby Chanae district in Tambon Chang Peurk, Che-por Dae-mah, 53, was shot dead as soon as he left his house to pray at a local mosque yesterday.

He was hit twice in the back and died at the scene.

Also yesterday, a 77-year-old woman was killed by militants in her house in Yala.

More than 2,600 people have been killed since a separatist insurgency broke out in January 2004 in the Muslim-majority south.

Meanwhile, Fourth Army Area commander Lt-General Wirote Buacharoon will double as head of the Civilian-Police-Military 43 (CPM43) in the latest rotation of officers, Army spokesman Colonel Acra Thiproch said.

Witote will replace Maj-General Samrej Srirai, who will be reassigned as deputy commander of the Fourth Army Area.

  15. shop around - see how big portions are and how much are they.

thai tend to eat often, all throughout the day (unlike in the west - where there are generally only 3 meals), thats why portions are smaller. Eating a lot in one go makes you sleepy, even more so in the hot country Thailand is.

also, thai tend to order several different dishes for one meal and noodle soup will be only one of them.

the other way of economy eating are buffets - eat as much as you want for the set price, say 99 baht or chosing stalls where you can help yourself to the vegetables set freely on the dining tables. You can chose what and how much of it you eat.

don't eat at random places - have your favourite ones, the cook will recognise you and in appreciation for your custom give you bigger and better portions. Occasionally tipping them will set you good for the future.

And lastly - stay away from the main streets and touristy ones - go inside the sois where there are less customers and cooks take a better care.

Gd advice, either be a regular customer or eat at buffets or gather a truckload of thai frens and share good ol' thai food. :o

  16. Yes, have two, three .. until you're filled up. What seems to be a problem here? Thai we serves small but repeatedly serving and as that we consider it's more proper to have it little than a big a** portion, dump in all like you've never seen food before.

Haha... no problem, i like Thai food, and since Thai are kind people, can i ask for more noodles instead of ordering 2-3 bowls? Pls advise me how i can save money, and not go half-hungry? THanks. or maybe i just eat rice or sticky rice all the time. :o

  17. Hi foody folks,

i find Thai food delicious but the food portions are rather little in LOS esp noodles (ba-mee, guay tiaw, kao soi etc). Maybe the rice orders like fried rice, rice with basil leaves etc are slightly more. Do i have to eat 2 bowls or order special-large (phi-set) for the noodles all the time?

  18. I think I would be looking at how fresh the chicken liver was before questioning the bamboo ...

Poultry commonly carry campylobacter and salmonella in their gut, which can contaminate the carcass during processing; don’t eat any part of a chicken or turkey pink. Stuffing makes it harder for the middle to get hot enough to kill the bacteria, and also increases the chance of introducing new contamination in the stuffing.

    Jim.

Chicken liver's a possibility too. Not sure whether was it thoroughly cooked or pink inside. It's def gd advice not to eat chicken pink with bird flu still around.

  19. It's a strange, unpleasant smell, unlike the fresh air that you expect when you switch on the air-cond. Tried switching to fresh air from recirc but the smell's there for the first few minutes, and it's gone after that. Leave the truck for a couple of hours, start the engine, & air-cond, and the smell's back for a few minutes.

The toyota mechanic asked if the smell was intermittent when driving, but since it's not, so he thought it's no problem. Will probably wait for the next servicing before check/topup aircon gas etc. Maybe they were careless in the last servicing like what Lickey said.

  20. :D When i lived in Spain i had a small orange orchard and the oranges were delicious and pip free. Can i purchase such a tree in Thailand or does anyone out there know if is possible to import some?

    Feed back welcome... :D

There are a few orange orchards in Fang, Thaton area and they are delicious & sweet. I'm sure you can purchase their oranges but why do you want to buy an orange tree? :o

  21. Not sure if the market seller use fresh bamboo or canned bamboo. There's a possibility that the tin was contaminated. And the other possibility was that the bamboo wasnt thoroughly cooked, thus still containing cyanide which is deadly.

    ----from internet

The cyanogenic glycoside in bamboo is taxiphyllin. Taxiphyllin is unusual amongst the 60 or so known similar compounds in that it degrades readily in boiling water. Thus the normal preparation of bamboo shoots should remove any problem.
