...talking about a holier- than -thou- attitude, oh gracious defender of everything Thailand...
When suffering from Tunnel Vision, one loses visual acuity in the peripheral visual fields while retaining visual acuity only in the central regions. Hence, it is a narrow path...

The bottom line is, all this is just making a mountain out of a molehill!
In real, most posters herein see nothing but wrong in Thai people and Thailand itself. Also, there are some, with a 'holier than thou attitude' looking down on people - hence, majority of these negative posts are quite expected, and very normal in the TVF; but a normal tourist would not look at that sign twice or would even have a hearty laugh!
This world has more serious issues for humans, than a humorous sign at a wayside restaurant! ????

Just did my check 4 days ago and amongst the figures I noticed something I hadn't noticed on previous occasions - CHOLESTEROL - NON - H.D.L - Is this a better indication than the LDL / HDL ratio?
CHOLESTEROL - TOTAL - 197.0 mg/dL
TRIGLYCERIDES - 95.2 mg/dL
CHOLESTEROL- H.D.L. - 56.9 mg/dL
CHOLESTEROL - NON - H.D.L 140.1 mg/dL
CHOLESTEROL L.D.L 121.1 mg/dL
CHOLESTEROL - VLDL 19.0 mg/dL
CHOL/HDL 3.4
LDL / HDL 2.12A quick search on the net, I found the following...
"High HDL cholesterol is helpful, but high non-HDL cholesterol may mean you're at an increased risk of heart disease. Fortunately, certain lifestyle changes involving diet, exercise, and not smoking may be able to get your non-HDL back in line."

Well, you are wrong.
They are speaking Tagalog because they are probably talking about you. Duh.
But, there are official stats on this and 3 times as many people speak English in the Phils then Thailand.
As I stated, many many more especially in the cities and tourist areas speak English in the Phils then here. Places like AC close to 100%.
But, there are official stats on this and 3 times as many people speak English in the Phils then Thailand.
With the US influence in the Philippines, is this rocket science?
Thailand never had that 'privilege' to be blessed with fluency in English!

We are talking about a 5 stars establishment
that cost a lot of money so as a customer you can
expect some minimal level in return
or is it asking too much again?
I have a friend who owns a 4 stas hotel in Paris
most of his customers are from america, it's just
impossible for him to imagine hiring someone who doesn't speak a good english.
I mean the problem is not the staff, they do what they can, the problem is the
management,
if you are the owner or the manager and you don't care enough of your customers to make them feel confortable with a minimum of language skills from your staff, because you prefer hire people underpaid with poors or no foreign language skills, it's just greed and can not be an excuse
Do you mean to say that the sign pictured on the OP was in a five star hotel? Really?

When I was young (many years ago) it was amazing to see how many languages servers (and other staff in tourism businesses) were speaking when traveling in Europe.
Basic English, German and French to ensure that staff could greet customers and that they could order was pretty much a given in countries like Italy, Greece and Spain.
The fact that tourists could communicate while on vacation provided a better holiday experience and resulted in repeat business and positive word of mouth (the Social Media of the 1970s and 80s).
Maybe speaking English would help improve the experience for visitors
Agree with you 100%
But... I have seem 'foreigners' loosing their head just because the staff were not fluent in English. Sometimes...both sides should have patience.
Some native English speakers needs a translator, because other native English speakers cannot understand him/her because of the accent!

The idea is close enough. Other places are happy to provide service in English. Forget Thailand, leave it to the Chinese and let them learn mandarin.
...in a dream world. Such 'classy' tourists are ONLY a handful and they will visit Thailand whether they speak English or not... it is the 'other type' of Tourists that keep complaining at the drop of a hat.

Stop speaking about what you do not really know. You just happen to be staying in your own country, most if not all of your life (so far).
Also, saying that you would leave for the smallest thing instead of complaining, proves you are the victim of wrong education.
And:''Thailand 39 million tourist. Philippine 5.5 million tourist.
Thailand win.''
You do understand you make Thailand the laughing stock by that comparison right? It proves how TH fails learning English,
even with so many arrivals, not tourists."victim of wrong education"

I don’t expect any Thais to speak English however there is a polite way to tell tourists how much an item is example : tapping on the calculator.
Rather then telling us off. Many market stall holders can be rude that way. In addition, not everyone who looks Asian and has tanned looking skin are Thais - so don’t get offended if we do not answer you in THAI.
The Thais do it very politely. It is the stuffed up foreigners who make a huge scene - they are 'superior' ????

"It must surely be the responsibility of Thais to speak English..." Oh, give over!
Sheez... Why is it?
Then you write, "...to engage a waiter whose IQ is likely less than 90 in conversation..." Ah, right!
The thing is, you can say what you like, but you don't get to say whose responsibility it is. Anyone with an IQ of 90+ would know that.
Judge. Jury. Executioner. Please dont speak about IQ here. It is irrelevant!
Please, I beg...

Though I kinda agree, I can't say I agree with "I was hoping the ones that were on the down and out would leave Thailand, these people were always angry and negative, never polite." Look, you never know what's going on in someone's life. Maybe they're like that because they are down and out and, having invested so much into Thailand and are fearful of having their lives turned upside down by being close to being forced to leave. Who knows? Just ignore them and let them get on with their lives.
Even the <deleted> in the video... maybe he's suffering or struggling too. It doesn't justify what he's done, not for 1 second, but hands-up if you've never, not once, done anything stupid in your life. Nah, me neither.
All this you must do in your home country.
Just leave Thailand (or for that matter any other country) if you are not in your proper senses for whatever reason.

Signing that that with love you can't credibly be taken as sincere.
I think it's similar to the southern U.S. diss

Another way to look at this.
We all know that businesses in general seek profits.
But as customers I think most people are looking for businesses that are putting the customers first.
Not the hurt feelings of the staff.
Certainly not insulting the customers.
In other words, treat the customers well and you get repeat business and make more money.
On the other hand I suppose a sign like that might be a hit with the self hating types that see Thais as some kind of romantic noble savages and westerners as crude animals.
Do you feel 'hurt' by this notice?
Oh... you seems to be very sensitive (yourself)?
Ever paused to think of the 'other' persons feelings? If not, you should!!!!!

The bottom line is...
In the 1960's it was the Russians and the Americans that were going to the moon. Today, the Chinese and the Indians are waltzing around it.
The brain boggles when you compare the tourists from these nations that come to Thailand! The citizens who aim for the moon, never waste time on forums like these abusing all and sundry for flimsy, unjustifiable reasons except for their own inferiority complexes.
Will this planet ever see peace?

I was in a True Vision office one day a few years ago when an American was really having a go at a young girl behind the desk, shouting and swearing. An English lady grabbed him by the arm and said "Listen, it's not her fault that you don't speak Thai!" Bravo!
This is total lack of education.
(I cannot write the real word here)

They aren't much better. Some do employ Burmese and Cambodian waiters, that do speak a bit better English.
Do you expect perfect English from all the places you visit? Whats wrong with employing Burmese oand Cambodian waiters? Or even from Timbuktu?
Whats the perfect picture you are demanding for?

-Sorry, according to stats (Estimates of tourism revenue directly contributing to the Thai GDP of 12 trillion baht range from one trillion baht (2013) 2.53 trillion baht (2016), the equivalent of 9% to 17.7% of GDP.) it is best for Thai businesses that cater to tourism to know basic English which is recognized as the international language. ( At times it is easier for me to order my dinner in Phnom Phen, Hanoi , or in Bali than in Bangkok. ) Of course I do not expect Thais to speak English in the rural areas.
Yes. That comes from the REAL tourists. NOT the cheap charlies that mess up everything... from the MRT to the Restaurants! Yes, the Trillions count from the genuine tourists who we dont see here on TVF at all!!!
Yes the difference is great - millions of Baht!

Oh really ? A sign obviously written by an English speaking Westerner who's probably employing the lowest on the food chain who'd probably be all on speaking Thai nevermind English......... cater for your clientel and less it with the scarcasm..... another five minute know it all in La la Land.......
Hurt very badly? Just relax and go back home where all will be good like in La La Land...
-
Well... just to sit back, with a beer in hand and to think of the past...
Most restaurants in Thailand that I have visited, the majority of the customers were Thais, with a handful of foreigners. And they do enjoy lavishly. Hence... whats all this talk about 'our money' etc...?
OK... maybe just the places that I visited! (not referring to the famous areas that the normal 'tourist' visits Thailand for)

I never agreed with people who complained about Thais' English. I've never complained, even remarked, about it. Made fun of it, yes, but all in good fun and in front of Thais themselves, who in turn laugh at my feeble attempt at Thai. All in good fun. Fact of the matter is - I'm in Thailand, so to communicate with the locals, I learn Thai. Not the other way around. Come on, this is not the bloody UK. This is Thailand. They speak Thai. Get on with it.
Never dreamt that a post like this would appear on the TVF!
Thank you.
“Don’t complain about our English, If you can’t speak Thai” - sign at restaurant goes viral - again
in Thailand News - Discussion
I went back to the OP and read the sign again. It says
"Please dont complain about our English if you cant speak Thai. Love you."
So... they DO speak English, dont they? It is just us, who were blinded by the hate for the Thais and anything Thai that missed the point?
