Bangkok Rejects Bid for More Phuket Tuk-Tuks

By Apinya Saksri and Chutima Sidasathian

    Thursday, April 23, 2009

A REQUEST to register 373 extra tuk-tuks on Phuket has been rebuffed by transport officials in Bangkok, who want to double-check the need for that number.

Phuket already has 1162 registered tuk-tuks. The additional vehicles would be distributed to co-operatives in the following districts: Kata-Karon 140, Patong 113, Phuket City 77, Kamala 43.

The Phuket Tourist Association and tessaban groups from Patong, Kata-Karon, Kamala, police and an airport representative met yesterday at Provincial Hall to discuss the tuk-tuk issue.

The Transport Department said in a letter that tuk-tuks were not built or maintained to high standards, or fuel-efficient. There was a need to restrict their use.

The letter requested local authorities to look more closely at the transport needs of their communities.

Tessaban Patong and police continued to try to provide special parking for tuk-tuks but tuk-tuks were constantly circling for passengers, creating a pollution problem, the meeting heard.

Tourists constantly complained about prices. About 700 tuk-tuks operated in Patong, the meeting was told, although some were based in Phket City and Kata-Karon.

Public transport had grown in Kata-Karon with buses, tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis but selected parking spaces were often occupied by vehicles beyond the marked zones.

Other zones were carefully designated, but underused.

Kamala had similar problems, the tessaban representative said, with numbers of tuk-tuks continuing to grow beyond control.

PTA vice president Sarayuth Mallam said prices of tuk-tuks were a major problem, especially in Patong.

As an example, he said, a tourist wanting to go from the Savoey seafood restaurant in beach road to Jungceylon was quoted 100 baht.

But on arrival, the tuk-tuk driver wanted 100 baht per person.

Other tourists who did not know Patong well paid high prices for short trips, or were taken on detours to disguise the fact it was just a short journey.

Registration of more tuk-tuks would probably bring more problems, he said. There were differences between the groups.

Tourism surveys of complaints among visitors had established transport as the No. 1 issue.

Khun Sarayuth said it was important to have fixed prices between various places on the island, even if those prices seemed high.

The president of the cooperative seeking the extra registrations, Natthanat Saelim, did not attend yesterday's meeting.

Elsewhere at Provincial Hall yesterday, Deputy Patong Mayor Chairat Sukban said tuk-tuk registration should be controlled by the local tessaban.

Many people complained to the tessaban about tuk-tuks, but only with control could the local authorities act.

He said police just ignored it when tuk-tuks parked in the wrong zones. ''They make Patong look bad,'' Khun Chairat said.

Why the hel_l would Phuket need 373 more tuk tuks?

  2. I will come back to this thread in November and laugh at what a failure this campaign has been.

    :)

By calling the monsoon season "summer" season will not make people come back.

Economy worldwide is crap, it's going to be a long wet season no matter how you brand it.

  3. Be careful.

There are gangs that go into internet cafe's in Thailand with a USB drive and download child porn onto the computer without the shop knowing.

Then they get the BiB's around to make the "discovery" and you can only guess what comes next.

I know a farang that runs a Internet cafe in Phuket and he refuses to allow Thai's to use his shops computers, he tells them the internet is down.

    Tourists only policy.

  4. Sondhi's injured driver is out of critical condition

Adul Saengpradab, driver of PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul, who was seriously injured during an attack on Friday, is now out of critical condition, a Mission Hospital doctor said.

Adul is suffering from gun wounds on the head, right chest and arm, doctor said, adding that the operation on him went well.

He is now in intensive care unit and is out of critical condition. However he would be under close medical care for 24 hours.

    - THE NATION -

Wow, 2 people shot in the head and no deaths.

    We have a miracle people.

Just like Thaksins "60 people murdered and put on military trucks"

    They all lie.

  5. I just saw footage of Sondhi walking around after the shooting, obviously blood everywhere but it could be a cut from the glass.

If anyone was shot in the head, they would not be walking around.

I find it fishy, i really do.

Dr TV 'Remote-doctor-by-watching-news' Quincy is on duty. Thank God you are around to tell us how things are!

Just like every other keyboard jockey on here. :D

If you were shot in the head with so called bleeding on the brain, would you be walking around? :o

Bleeding on the brain is not a minor injury and i doubt that is what really happened.

If you believe Thai media, go ahead.

Why don't you enlighten me on what went on if you are so informed?

He is clearly not shot at point blank range with a heavy round. More likely hit by a fragment (partial bullet) or deviated bullet (via the hull of the car) with reduced projectile speed (less J). We can assume this from the casings I saw looked like handgun-casings, not from ARs and their penetration ability isn't at par with a rifle round and will lose a lot of momentum against an vehicle hull - but still be able to do some serious damage.

In any case, he is clearly hurt in the head and the bullet/fragment that entered him needs to be taken out via an operation is it is lodged in a very sensitive area.

    Or you disagree?

    I go on proof.

I saw him walking around, he supposedly had a bullet/shrapnel in the head.

I know that the brain would shut down if he had a severe head injury, he would not be walking around and off to hospital awake.

They claim a operation is needed to clear whatever is in his head, we will see when pics are released.

Then i will make further judgement.

Somehow, i think he will make a miraculous recovery for the PAD rally in Phuket.

  6. Sondhi's attack may prolong emergency decree

Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn stated Friday the government would take into consideration the heavily-armed attack on PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul, when it decided whether to lift the state of emergency.

Panitan also said that the schedule of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva would be kept secret due for security reasons.

Sondhi was having medical treatment at Vajira Hospital and is now safe and even able to speak.

    - THE NATION -

    That is surprising.

Just after the reds said they would resume protests after the decree was lifted.

It's just one big game of chess.

  7. I just saw footage of Sondhi walking around after the shooting, obviously blood everywhere but it could be a cut from the glass.

  8. Well, I guess every soldier/weapon expert can confirm you will be certainly dead after receiving a 100 round shower from an AK-47...

Could that incident have been stage-managed? Not uncommon here in Thailand. I remember some cases with the dear leader involved years ago...

    Very plausible.

The fact that 100 rounds from automatic weapons(at close range)and failed to kill anyone.

    Suspicious.

  9. Yes they have wide feet, probably because they wear flip flops and not shoes? And the pointy nail thing is really nasty.

Has anyone noticed some Thai chicks (havent noticed any guys) have an "extra row" of top teeth???

Its true, they've got a double set of teeth, a bit like my avatar!

Much like a shark, how ironic :o

  10. As a result of not wearing shoes and working in the rice paddies, my girlfriends big toe and second toe are like a pair of pincers very strong grip, comes as a result of pulling rice with the toes she told me.

    True.

They have evolved so the rice does not get stuck between their toes. :o

  11. Can anyone recommend a dry cleaner in Patong, Phuket Town, Cherngtalay areas?

Next door to Simon Cabaret in Patong, you can't miss it.

I use them and they also have a pick up and delivery service to your home if needed.

They are very good, have not ruined anything yet.

  12. A shop on the 3rd floor of Central Festival sells them, opp Supersports and the bookshop.

They have everything, latest games and accessories and will order game they don't have.

Some of the new games are pricey.

I have over 45 games now

Edit^^^^ that is the name of the store, The game never dried.

They have a store in Tesco Lotus too.
