There are many possible reasons and not just money. Money might be a reason but reality tells us there are lots of other reasons why couples stay together.
Maybe, but not in the case of 'dirty old men'.........................................

20+ years ago a German friend recommended learning 3 words a day, he was smart and I followed his advice..............................................................................I got a phrase book,
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8033805-practical-thai
and got myself a small notebook to write my daily chosen words in, I targeted 270 words in 3 months (enought for basic communication in any language) and used that as a platform and went on from there........................................just do it.....................................................

I know that a reasonable sized bar will be looking at paying 130,000 baht a month along with tea money every three years
Pre Covid, 130K for a reasonably sized bar in one of the busiest tourist locations in the kingdom IMO is not expensive at all.....................................

As far as I'm aware, one of the prohibited jobs/business for a foreigner in the Kingdom is anything to do with transportation, logistic and transport related............................

Any use of indicators shows there's life in the vehicle and you kinda know where you stand........won't be long before we're cussing and experiencing road rage with AI or robots...............certainly an interesting thought.........!!

If you can't sell mandarin oriental for messily 60 million bucks, you can't sell anything.
I think UK did really well selling their embassy in Bangkok a few years back for 16 billion.
Congratulations!
As a Brit, I found that embarrassing, never mind the money........................ surely we could have kept it...........

Wasn't it the Carlsberg brewery that originally made the Chang in Thailand and then they got overtaken or kicked out the Country or something ?
That's the one, something along those lines................was mid to late noughties and was defo some kinda court case at the time, as to resolution, not sure anyone will know the truth...........

Chang wasn't around in the '70s '80s or even early '90s. It was introduced in 1995. They changed the formula, much to my chagrin, and started bottling it in those awful green bottles, in 2015.
You're right, I remember in 91 visit only drinking Singha and and wasn't there a court case regarding copyright and the 'green bottles' also resembling Carlsberg etc in noughties also...............

That's great. I mean, you getting a cheap thrill is clearly more important than handing the police powers to selectively and arbitrarily extort businesses while inconveniencing the general public.
PS there are probably more "edgy" ways of getting a cheap thrill in Thailand on a quiet afternoon than by buying a can of Ginger beer at a Mom and Pop shop at 2.01 pm. Just sayin' ????
I don't give give a monkeys what the police do, it's out of my hands, I'm just an observer................and 'yes' my cheap thrill is more important, because I can't 'affect it'..............................I'm all ears on the edgy front though, please keep me informed and how did you know ginger beer is one of my favourite tipples, do you know of a local shabeen .............and on a serious note, real shame it's not available locally........................

For me, maps give one that sense of adventure, even if is only a domestic trip, you can't beat an ordinance survey map in the UK in my opinion and even today, kids use them as part of the Duke and Edinburgh awards, but Sat navs/google maps etc, sure stick em on the dash for run of the mill stuff and research...........................and back to the thread proper.............................. I'd love to have experienced life in the first half of the 20th Century in Thailand if the Kingdom if any of the looped stills on the playlist in Mad Dogs in Chiang Mai are anything to go by.......................................

But the nonsensical law that enables you to get the 'cheap thrill' by breaking it, at best inconveniences people and at worst is used to extort people.
So why have the law?
Absoltely, waste of time completely, but personally, I enjoy 'the edge' or 'cheap thrill' that you so derided........................

And I used maps to make sure I don't get lost. And if I was not sure then I asked real people on the street to help me find the way.
Good luck with that in the Kingdom, maps fine, do love a map myself, enjoy the tangibilty and awkwardness of it on my lap in the car, really!! but asking on the street..................................... most Thais who don't know and invariably they don't or can't articulate how to, will send you anywhere so as not to lose face................

Personally I'd rather they removed the stupid laws, and enforced the serious ones rather than getting some cheap thrill out of "getting away with it" or "beating the system" by buying a beer at a Mom and Pop shop at 3pm. But then, I'm not 14 anymore.
Nothing wrong with a 'cheap thrill' as long as it's not at another's expense..................................

Actually I kind of liked it too. I'd go down a few stores and find some corner shop that would sell you a bottle during the banishment hour (s).
Nothing better than a challenge, a nod and a wink with the locals, and sense of beating the system..........................I hear you................Fun fun fun..........................

How about the original Chang formula with 6.4% alcohol! Best Thai beer ever.
3 for 100b at any mom and pop store nationwide in the noughties, not sure the price now, (hopefully have some old schoolers chip in with prices in the 70's! ) but was it about 2010 it was reduced? Was a stealth move that's for sure and probably due to excise duty thresholds, certainly wouldn't have been approved by locals and they're probably still reminiscing like we are today.....................

I had the same problem , 600 quid in 50's that the exchange would
not accept because writing on them , no intention of ever returning
to the UK, my daughter cannot come , so what to do....
I got a carboard box widened the corrugation a bit in bottom of the
box, rolled up the 50's one by one and inserted into the box ,filled the
box with dried fruit , cashew nuts and some other stuff, got to PO , only
to be told cannot send dried fruit ,nuts now, F#ck ! had to open box and
take them out, so now paying 2 Kg price, for just over a Kg,
She got the parcel and money OK , Lucky ? , so I told her to send 300 quid
back to me same way, hidden in corrugation , parcel arrives 600 quid hidden
between 2 John West Kippers , so really Lucky ???, says she could not get the
new plastic 50's to roll up.......
regards Worgeordie
You're showing your true colours here Mr. Geordie!!!!..Great idea to send em home if you wanna chance it and the OP could also consider offering an incentive to a friend or thrid party..............eg sell the notes for less than their face value and just be done with it if all other options fail or perhaps consider some ink remover/equivalent and test a sample area first of course............................................
