Declared cost should include the postal charges. It probably pushed you over the duty free amount.

Sure, but that duty free threshold is £135 and total value was under £100 including shipping....there wasn't a duty charge per se, it just stated a £50 VAT charge, something I've never seen with lots of previous shipments of similar value.................................

  2. I have used many of the caffitaly capsule machines over the years and they are available in Thailand. The coffee is very similar in taste to Lavazza IMO and I have noticed Italians visiting the Kingdom have always enjoyed coffees served from these machines which I believe to be a vote of confidence..................I have added a facebook link below and a quick google search reveals more info.........................I don't know where you're based, but there's a Swiss guy (Marcus) on Samui who used to sell the older Caffitaly pod machines and service them too............................................The Boncafe suggestion is also a good one as they are very good at servicing and maintaining the machines..................................

  3. Personally, I believe all country's customs are a law unto themselves.......we had a Red Cross parcel sent from Thailand (Thai post office) to the UK last year with some Thai dried foodstuffs. Purchase and declared cost was no more than about £40 (certainly no duty to pay) .....we received a letter to go and collect the parcel from the local sorting office and pay a £50 VAT charge....................... To contest the charge was just a long drawn out process designed to wear down the consumer,  no chance in hell of getting the charge reversed .....................Customs...you're in the lap of the gods....................................

One time I was stopped at a police check point and was asked to show my DL. I  didn't have it with me so I showed him my Medicare Card and he said thank you sir and let me pass, Amazing!!!

Refreshing, and just another reason why we never ceased to be 'amazed' as you put it to life in the Kingdom....I love tales like this, nice to be pinched..........................

You hardly ever hear on Non O-X.

    The financials seem onerous.

I have never even met anyone that has had one.

In another thread there is a guy that had details as (think) he previously had a non OX.

Will try and find it and send you link.

I can only assume that they are not best option.

Cheers for that...............this is what I was looking at yesterday, gotta scroll 2/3 way down..............

If you can show that the money has been in the account for some period then would not need to show funds came from overseas.

I'm not aware how long "that period" of time is. However would not need to be years. Much less

Thank you very much Doc.................and whilst researching on the Royal Thai embassy website in London yesterday, I saw there is such a thing as an OX visa, namely needing 3 million THB in a Thai account for a 10 year long stay visa for over 50's..............................I have never heard of it mentioned on TV, didn't know this visa exisited............Would you know if it still exists and if so, do you have an opinion on whether this is a good visa to apply for for those that might be fortunate enough to be eligible?? The price was just a couple of hundred pounds I think, a far cry from the Elite cost..................

Last December I caught TB... I was shocked and after 12 mths I'm on 18 tabs a day and feeling <deleted>...

My blood sugar too is up and down and taking meds for that.. I've lost 18kgs this year...I'm 63..

I'm thinking of going back to UK for proper treatment..

What's the implications for leaving Thailand and say 2 or 3ths coming back...I've had 2 covid jabs and got a certificate..

    TIA

You're sounding like you need help/ a reset and for whatever reason you don't wanna get treated in Thailand. Perhaps it's financial or you juust wanna be treated by your own, I get that....But if you have the money to fly home, then you could get treated in hospital in the Kingdom IMO and as Sheryl pounts out, they vare very experienced in doing so with TB.......................................................it's a fact you do officially need to be 'ordinarily resident' in the Uk for free NHS treatment and I'm sure as Black Prince highlighted , you can or might get billed for 150% of costs, but as Britman (who by his own admission, is happy to lie to the government!) says, you will get treated............................................................Another poster advises to state that you are homeless, this is also an angle.................................................................................So, really it all depends on how much front you've got. I know of a couple of  expats who have lived abroad for many years and most certainly haven't been 'ordinarily resident' but have been fixed for serious conditions by just going back and going to hospital.............You will be seen if you go into A and E and you will be treated and if you don't have any money or assets in the UK, they can bill you all they like and that's gonna the end of it......................Or you could do the right thing and move back home, register with a GP and go through the proper channels, perhaps get a P/T job and reinstate your tax status and whatever pension you may have as well).....................get treated.......................keep an address in the UK after and return should you so wish.......................

You wouldn't even need a tourist visa given that you have money in Thai bank in your name.

You could enter visa exempt and obtain a non O based on retirement. The 800k needs to be in the bank on the day you apply.

That gives you a 90 day stamp.

In the last 30 days of that period obtain a 12 month extension.

    Simple process.

I have posted extension report today of that simple process in this forum.

I'm in a similar situation with money in Thai accounts for many years now and am looking to return back from UK and subsequently get a retirement visa soon.........On a thread yesterday, it was quoted by 2 posters (UbonJ, being one), that the 800K money needed to show that it had come from overseas........In my case, the money wasn't transferred from overseas, but was from deposits from within the Kingdom over many years..................I'm a tad confused as the link UJ attached seemed to indicate that the funds should have come from overseas....................any advice apreciated..................

Came across a farang yesterday in the 7-11 who obviously is in denial. He failed the temp check, but ignored the servers protestations to test again and went straight in to find his purchases while being vocal. I felt like keeping my distance if this guy is reading hot...While paying he was banging on about how it is all BS.... mask on, but below nose.

Not fair on the staff in these places really. He tried to engage me and my comment of 'Well over 5 million dead and buried I am going along with it'... and his response is 'Well you better stay clear, as I am not vaccinated'..... So not only a scofflaw, but gets his kicks from worrying those who may consider the threat real!

    Takes all types......

and we wonder why we're referred to as 'dirty foreigners'..................... every dog has it's day.............................in that I trust.............................

  10. I am assuming there isn't an English speaking/International school nearby........................So, either move there yourself full time and speak English with her 24/7 or IMO preferably, persuade wife to move to an area where she can go to a school where English is the primary language spoken, eg an International one....................Unless your daughter is around kids for most of the day that speak English, Thai will always be her first language...........

The discrepancy between experiences is easily explained. To close a company is not very expensive, however a final balance will have to be made and corporate tax paid before it can be closed. If a property has been in a company name for a long time, has since appreciated in value while being depreciated in the yearly accounts, then this can result in a large profit upon sale, resulting in a large corporate tax bill.

example; property purchased 10 years ago for 3 million, book value today after writing off 5% per annum (to reduce yearly taxes any accountant will depreciate assets by as much as allowed) is 1.5 million. Now sold and valued at 5 million. Corporate profit is 3.5 million (disregard other expenses and deductibles). That’s 15% x 3M + 20% x 0.5M = 550,000 Baht tax bill.

I'm no corporate tax expert by any means, but if you buy somethng for 3M and then after the 1.5 depreciation that you mention and selling/valued at 5M, then the profit is 0.5 Million which is the difference between purchase and current, therefore leaving 0.5 profit................................would you not pay tax on the 0.5 only (less any deductables)..??

That is correct the land opposite me is level with the dirt road and has been unused for many years. If i blocked the PVC outlet then the water would have to go out the bottom of the gate, as its impossible to hold the rain water inside our land. I guess i need to wait and check what the office thinks when i visit them next week.

    P7151618.JPG

From this pic, it looks like opposite is just trees on empty land. Would you be able to run a pipe across and under the road from your property having channelled the water in to that pipe on your land? With permission of course!!!! Tricky one TBH as it sounds like the locals have taken a jealous disliking to your development.......................... I'm sure the local visit by local authority will be able to sort the situation amicably though (as long as they are seen to win, it should be fine}...................................................

    I know.

I've done it. I can recall once, after being told it would mean a long wait for me, that this was fine as I was hungry and would go have lunch and then come back later.  Also once smiled and held up the book I was carrying to show I was quite ready to wait.

Once they see you are nto going to cave, they usually come around and do what they need to. They just like to try it on first. Because apparently it often works.

Again, great advice to those who might be caving in to the pressure..........................I for one, if ever presented with a similar situation will be applying one or many of your tactics....................nice one..................
