  1. Went on Monday 22nd March - handed in my docs - did the colour blindness, spacial and reaction tests without a problem - I felt sorry for the young girls who came for motorbike licences as they probably only encounter an accelerator and footbrake every 5 years!

    Then sat for an hour watching the 'training video' accompanied by several sleeping Thais and others engrossed on their mobiles. Then got my 2 licences within 20 minutes (yet again they gave me 6 years so not complaining) 255 baht motorbike and 500 baht car

  2. A couple of things - here in Pranburi when I went to renew on expiry 2 Feb they told me to come back 1 Aril and gave me a slip of paper stating passport and visa, doctor's cert and residence cert. Said my Tabien Baan was not accepted (Yellow book)

    Went yesterday to check - now accept Tabien Bahn so that saved 2,000 baht at Immigration for residence cert - went to my local docs and he gave me a certificate for 200 baht. Pranburi does 2 'training sessions' 0900 and 1300 - docs have to be processed by 30 mins beforehand. Going Monday and will be interested what they give me- they have me a six year licence last time when I renewed my expiring 5 year oe!

  3. Since many are like me due to make our delayed 90 day report between 1 and 31 August it strikes me that there will be a lot of people '90-daying' in the same month. Having said that, if Immigration adds 90 days to the date you report in August. we will all be there  again in November.

    It seems logical that Immigrations should just add 180 days to your original 90-day date to separate us into easy 'bundles'.

    Is that too logical?

    I am going to do mine mid-August to miss the ruah so maybe someone can enlighten me before I go.

  4. Thank for all your comments guys; I said I would update after my visit to Immigration to transfer my current visa details to my new passport (incidentally still a burgundy colour but with European Union removed from the top).

    I enquired as to whether my visa would now be extended to October (the original expiry date of my previous one) on the basis that I presented 12 months financial information in September. I was told that I would have to reapply with a full 12 months advice to extend beyond 3 March (the date my old passport expired). They confirmed that if I could not do this I would have to leave and obtain anew O visa from outside the Kingdom.

     

    Anyway I went to my Kasikorn Bank branch today and managed to get some retrospective credit advice notes for deposits into my old cancelled joint account to fill in the gaps in my files. 4,000 THB  for eight.  I am now awaiting delivery of same by e-mail and then should be able to get a new extension.

     

    For information as well as VFS requiring a colour copy of every page of your expiring passport when you apply - the Immigration police want a black and white copy of every page when you go to get details transferred (I paid nil in 2010). Fortunately I was aware due to a piece by Richard Barrow https://www.richardbarrow.com/2019/06/a-quick-guide-to-renewing-your-british-passport-in-bangkok/

     

  5. As far as I am aware there is no basis to obtaining an O visa - the distinction comes when you want to extend it. The situation is I went to extend my current visa that expired in October and was granted one till March when my passport expired. I now have a new passport but I suspect Immigration will not extend the visa til October on that one. I do not have 12 months financial statements as I closed my old joint account and now have a single name account opened in September.

    If Immigration refuse my application I will need a new O visa

I am amazed re this subject - my mate went to renew his visa in Chai Nat and they said 40,000 a month for marriage visa now not acceptable, he queried this with regard to the regulations but was told Bangkok said this was true he had to borrow 400,000. Now he has been told that 400,000 is not sufficient as he has to show he has a monthly income on top of that for living expenses.

     

    Some of these Immigration Departments are making up the rules on the hoof - I reckon the Embassies need to get involved - but will they bearing in mid they abdicated all responsibility for proof of income letters even when the proof was official P60 and DWP letters

  7. I have never filled in a TM30 (or for that matter a TM28). Today I asked my Immigration Office what was the position as I had seen all the fracas on here suggesting TM 30 filled in if leaving home province. The IMO agreed that stays of more than 24 hours in hotels, guest houses etc the onus is on the owner, re-entry into the Kingdom does not require TM 30 from your wife if she owns the house. In other words the one my wife filled in when we moved into our new house in 2012 still stands. My IMO do not ask for tea money

  8. Why is anyone even bothering to post on here? Do you know how many Thais are driving without a licence anyway? How may have unlicensed vehicles? How many are not wearing headgear? In all these cases they do not have any insurance. Pathetic law enforcement - why do they even publicise these laws when they do not enforce them? Illegal for breakdown vehicles to show emergency vehicle lights??? Is that an ambulance up ahead - no it is some guy selling spare tyres.

    Having said all of that I still live here because it is better than UK and Boris (Trump) Johnson.

  9. I would highly recommend Mod (Parichat Martin) as her legal knowledge is good and she has a an excellent command on English language. Extremely useful as I consulted on a matter that would affect my Thai wife and Mod was able to put us both at ease using English and Thai. She refused payment as she said it was a free consultation.

    I have no hesitation in recommending 'Mod' of Legal Services Hua Hin - you can find them right next to the exit door of Makro Hua Hin - very convenient for parking (!) and a little shopping as well.

  10. With a non-immigrant 'O' visa and a re-entry permit does the re-entry have to be via an airport or is a land border permissible? I seem to recall some mention a long time ago that such a re-entry has to be through an airport.

    I was thinking of driving into Myanmar for a short break but do not want to jeopardise my visa

Can I suggest you get a Tabien Baan (yellow Book) - the Amphoe here in Pranburi just required a translation of my passport details into Thai and sight of our marriage cert and my wife's tabien baan (Blue book) - no charge and I use the yellow book as proof of residence. I haven't tried it out at the driving licence centre but will enquire when I tax my car tomorrow if that is acceptable for renewing driving licences instead of paying Immigration for a certificate

  12. I just received an e-mail from the British Embassy listing charges for 2019  Amongst a list of things is this one :-

    this covers proof of residency as required when renewing Thai driving licences viz

    Affirmation of residencyThis service is provided for British nationals who are required to make an affirmation of residency in Thailand. The affirmation template will be available at your appointment for you to complete.What you will need to bring with you

    • proof of identity – British passport

    • proof of address - we accept a driver’s licence, utility bill, house registration book, rental contract showing your full name and address

    • the correct fee – see the list of fees. We prefer payment by card

    Now bearing in mind the Embassy refuses to issue proof of income based on the evidence of a Gov't document P60 and a letter from Dep't of Work & Pensions stating State Pension how can it take these things above and declare an affirmation of residency?

     

    I know the letters are now a thing of the past and other forms of evidence are required my Immigration it just astounds me - it shouldn't really!

     

     

  13. A friend has asked me if I can recommend a reliable taxi operator in Hua Hin to take his brother from HH to Suphan Buri - his brother was quoted 5,000 THB on-line from UK. Suphan Buri is 258 kms from HH whilst BKK is 224 kms so he should be getting 2,500-3,000 - anyone any contacts please

  14. Ally3220 - you were looking at the wrong criteria - look at 'In the case of retirement'

    In the case of retirement:

    Criteria for Consideration

    The alien:
    (1) Must have been granted a non-immigrant visa (NON-IM).
    (2) Must be 50 years of age or over.
    (3) Must have evidence of having income of no less than Baht 65,000 per month; or
    (4) On the filing date, the applicant must have account  deposited  (saving / fixed account) in a bank in Thailand of no less than
    Baht 800,000 for the past three months. For the first year only, the applicant must have proof of a
    deposit account in which said amount of funds has been maintained for no less than 60 days prior to
    the filing date; or
    (5) Must have an annual earning and funds deposited with a bank totaling no less than Baht
    800,000 as of the filing date.
    (6) An alien who entered the Kingdom before October 21, 1998 and has been consecutively
    permitted to stay in the Kingdom for retirement shall be subject to the following criteria:

    (a) Must be 60 years of age or over and have an annual fixed income with funds maintained in
    a bank account for the past three months of no less than Baht 200,000 or have a monthly income of
    no less than Baht 20,000.

    (b) If less than 60 years of age but not less than 55 years of age, must have an annual fixed
    income with funds maintained in a bank account for the past three months of no less than Baht
    500,000 or have a monthly income of no less than Baht 50,000.

    Documents to be submitted

    1. Application form
    2. Copy of applicant’s passport
    3. Evidence of income such as a retirement pension, interest or dividends; and/or
    4. Account  deposited  (saving / fixed account) certificate issued by a bank in Thailand and a copy of a bankbook
    5. Only in the case of Criterion (6), the applicant must submit documents equivalent to Clauses 1-4
    stated above.

    Remarks
  15. I had a 'run in'with HMRC on the basis that I owed £700. Based on your 'monthly' pension (or is it 4-weekly?) you would not have to pay any tax.

    Having said that the personal allowance was altered the last tax year and the age-related allowance was scrapped except for high income people. You are allowed £11,500 free of tax.

    What HMRC said to me was that I had not claimed that allowance in my tax return.

    Bearing in mind I had previously been assessed under s128 and my state pension was not counted I did not think I had to claim the personal allowance.

    A call to HMRC put matters straight and also I got the assuring news I need no lomger submit a tax return. 

    Give them a call  If you make a lot of call to Uk a quartely payment of £8 gives you unimited calls to UK landlines - very useful for contacting Government numbers with long waiting times.
