    The three pre-season title favorites all opened their 2012 campaigns with home wins. Buriram United and Chonburi both had comfortable starts with victories over Chiang Rai United and Thai Port respectively. It wasn’t plain sailing for Muangthong United as their game with BEC Tero provided two red cards and some late drama. Datsakorn’s 35 yard rasper midway through the second period seemed to have earned the Kirins the 3 points until Khaled’s 89th minute spot kick levelled matters. Within two minutes, the home side restored their lead and secured the points when Dagno Siaka headed home from a corner. Youngsters Thitiphan and Gilbert Koomson were both dismissed on 75 minutes as each side finished a man short.

    It was a mixed start for the three promoted clubs. The Fighting Bulls (Wuachon) were tamed by Bangkok Glass while Chainat earned a reasonable point at Army. BBCU, who were cheered on by plenty of Sisaket FC fans, opened up with a 1-0 win over Isan United at the Rajamangala Stadium.

    The games between Pattaya v Samut Songkhram and Police v TTM both ended in goalless stalemates and Osotspa beat TOT 2-1 in Saraburi.

    Saturday’s action began with Ratchaburi flexing their muscles to claim a 3-1 victory at Raj Pracha. The Dragon’s debutant, Douglas Gardozo, netted two goals as did Krabi’s pint-sized Laotian forward, Soukaphone, as the southern new boys beat Bangkok FC 2-1. PTT Rayong needed a 94th minute winner to edge out Siam Navy while the neglected sides of Songkla and Phuket will be happy with their opening day returns.

    The following day Pattalung and Korat joined Krabi and Ratchaburi to complete a quartet of wins for the newly promoted sides. Korat had to come from behind with Anon’s brace helping the Swatcats beat Air Force 2-1. Pattalung’s Siwapoong fired an opening day hat-trick for the Swiftlets as they produced the shock result of the round with a 4-2 at Bangkok United.

    Pre-season favorites Suphanburi beat Sriracha 2-0 with both goals coming from ex-Thai international Pipat. Khon Kaen were the only one of the three relegated sides to collect any points with a 2-1 win over Saraburi FC.

    Buriram PEA have a chance to distance themsleves from rivals Chonburi and Muang Thong United, as those to teams have a week off to prepare for midweek fixtures in the AFC Cup. A win at Samut Songkram would see PEA open up a 6-point lead on Chonburi in 2nd, and put them15 points ahead of 5th-placed MTU, leaving the defending champions a mountain to climb as the halfway stage of the season approaches. 3rd-placed Police could also lose ground on the leaders, as they were to face Muang Thong. 6th-placed Army also have the week off On Saturday, Sri Racha will look for a 3rd straight win over stuttering TOT, which could see the Marlins climb out of the drop zone. Also on Saturday, mid-table clashes see Chiang Rai face troubled Port, and Si Saket host Osotspa. The big match of the day will be at Tepsadin, were BEC Tero (4th) welcome Bangkok Glass (7th), with both teams looking to climb the table as the teams around them take a breather.

    On Sunday, there are just 3 matches: Khon Kaen v Pattaya, samut Songkram v PEA, and a relegation-zone battle between Navy and TTM Phichit.

    On Wednesday, Port host TTM in their fixture that was postponed from Songkran.

    In Division 1, last week's big result in Chai Nat saw BBCU take the outright lead. They will seek to keep Buriram at bay when they visit Saraburi on Sunday. Buriram will have the opportunity to apply some pressure when they host Supanburi they day before. In other Saturday fixtures, struggling Chantaburi face a Phuket team looking to move up again, PTT Rayong will look to continue their recent good form against a sliding Rajpracha, and lowly Chiang Mai face Songkla.

    On Sunday, the two clashes that catch the eye, besides BBCU's match, are the Bangkok derby, and another relegation 6-pointer for RBAC. Bang Mod is the venue for the all Bangkok clash, with the Iron Bulls (FC) and the Angels both looking for a third consecutive win. After losing at home to Bangkok FC last week (and watching them escape the drop zone), bottom-placed RBAC travel another struggling side, Thai Honda, as they attempt to find goals, and more importantly points (they have 3 &5 repsectively), to close the 6-point gap between them and safety.

    I was at the Saraburi/Muangthong match -

    yeah, I was surprised at how MU played - when I saw them play Thai Army, I thought they looked very good (at least during the first half of that game) - especially their speed -

    but during the Saraburi match, they sucked - I felt like I was back in the states watching some high school team play

    the saraburi stadium was PACKED - i couldn't find a place to sit, and they jammed people in there for standing room only -

    i want to get info/need help with other stadiums/teams around the country - anybody who has been/goes to buriram/sisaket/chiang rai/phichit matches, feel free to send me a message - (you can earn some extra cash, too)

    Five TPL matches will be played in the capital this weekend, and the pick of them is at the PAT Stadium in Khlong Toey as Thai Port host Army United in another Bangkok derby. The Army have been one of the surprise packages this season, but a 1-1 home draw with Sisaket last weekend suggests they’re quite not the finished article. The Port Lions, meanwhile, were held 1-1 at home by Bangkok Glass last week, and a fascinating match should be on the cards this Sunday (kick off: 4pm). Elsewhere in the capital itself, BEC Tero Sasana host Sriracha at the Thephasadin Stadium on Saturday (kick off: 6pm).

    A little further afield, Bangkok Glass welcome Osotspa-Saraburi to Pathum Thani on Saturday (kick off: 6pm). Osotspa stunned everyone last weekend when they smashed five past Muangthong. As such they are possibly narrow favourites to win this one as BG are on an uninspired run of three draws. There’s a derby of sorts in Nonthaburi as ground-sharers Muangthong and TOT meet. The champions are the home side in this Saturday fixture (kick off: 6pm), and they should get their season back on track against a TOT side that has lost four out of four. And Police United will be hopeful of continuing their good form as Samut Songkhram provide the opposition at the Thammasat Stadium on Sunday (kick off: 6pm).

    In other fixtures, Pattaya host leaders Buriram PEA in Chonburi. Chonburi themselves are at home to TTM Phichit. Out-of-form Siam Navy are away at Khon Kaen, and Sisaket make the long journey to Chiang Rai. The pick of the Division 1 games in the capital is at the Thupatemee Stadium in Pathum Thani as Air Force United host PTT Rayong on Saturday (kick off: 6pm). Bangkok United and Bangkok F.C are both playing away from home.

    Bangkok Glass v Muang Thong United also Khon Kaen play first ever match in Div 1 on Sunday and Thai Port athome for first time this season. In Div 1 Chiang Mai are playing their first home match under 2010 coach of the year should be interesting.

    Today Chiang Mai defeated Trang in the away match on the other side of the country

    Now CMFC 5 points clear in 2nd, but Saraburi have a game in hand. The top two go up. At this stage I reckon 2 home wins in remaining fixtures should secure a Div 1 spot for Chiang Mai in 2011.

    Cheers Nigel, sorry we never got chance to meet for a drink, hope to see you up here in the future.

    No worries... we'll have to sort it our next time. Sure I'll be back for another CM match in the near future. Great atmosphere, can see a big future for the club.

    One concern, if CM do get promoted they will be on the back foot from the start in Div 1 next year. Other Div 1 clubs will have about 3 months extra preparation time for the new season.
