  1. Anglophobia-LOL. All the former British colonies yearn for the good old days, when they paid their taxes to the crown and where proud to be part of an Empire.

Yes and far less problems in the world, if the natives started getting out of hand, send a gun boat up the river to fix it up quickly....none of this Iraq war crap, Vietnam may never have happended etc etc...Under British rule the world would have been a better place today

Tea sales would also have been up and there would have been a lot less 7-11's.....................thumbsup.gif

  2. I know of a certain gentleman who is still happily married after 32 years to an ex-bargirl. He has just turned 81 last year and to see the two of them you would never know! For those of you that say you can take the girl from the bar but never take the bar from the girl; you may well be right.

But I would rather be in the company of someone who had their senses about them; a sense of humour and common sense than not................thumbsup.gif

  3. There are no pirates in Thai waters

Thailand's fishing vessels ply their trade in other areas. Do you remember the Thais held hostage by the Somalis?

In respect to Thailand's coastal waters, the navy is tasked with protecting the coastline from thieves, smugglers and trafficers of humans.

    No, I don't - in Somalia?

I know navy guys and they told me often that there is no problem with the Thai coast. The nearest problem is in Malaysia.

I've heard the western coast of Issan is a hotbed for the pirates as well.

  4. There is a lot of information out there on the internet! Fact.

When someone starts an article like this and bases their source on a site with articles written by "experts" and edited for clarity by "viewers" then you get something like wikipedia. The below is their (wisegeeks) About Us.

    post-76988-0-88982200-1343719544_thumb.j

Never have been comfortable following information like this

  5. As a retired law enforcement investigator, these reports always sound crazy to me. So many questions, and such poor reporting......Wife tried to contact in there own home? Problems with a boxer? How old the boxer? Husband more than twice the age of wife!!!! I will not say what I think of this case on here due to the simple fact, that If we all had a half of brain......solved. I would look at the wife and her maybe boyfriend..... Of course far be it for a murder investigator to know what most likely to happen from poor reporting. I love living here but ...dam_n.

As a retired law enforcement investigator you have jumped to a lot of conclusions in your above statement.

" that If we all had a half of brain......solved". Please pray tell, what is the answer? BTW, it is not up to the reporter or newspaper (as much as I distrust both) to solve the case. They are reporting with the facts they have been given, so I don't see where your comment on poor reporting comes into it.

  6. The fact that they carry a Thai passport or nationality makes then 100% Thai, so why should they be treat differently from other persons who are 100% Thai

The fact that he has a farang father, means he could never be a General in the army, I agree with the OP to some degree, why fight for a country who discriminates against you, of course when the time comes my son will be in the same position, I will let him choose, but he will know the facts before he chooses.

Are we still talking about conscription here? I would be impressed if he made it to general in two years. To achieve that position he would have to be a volunteer on a career path and if that was the case, it is out of the father's hands anyway.

  7. "He also asked why not the government did not have a pilot project for assessment, or consider the programme's feasibility, before the nationwide dissemination of tablets?"

I think out of the entire article, the above is the key question. Would also have to agree that teachers education for the use of the tablets is of great importance. You would not expect to be taught how to drive by an unqualified driving instructor would you?

And yes, I know it isn't a very good example because of the driving skills in this country..............wink.png

But as stated in an earlier post, this is not about education, this was a political promise.

  8. Talking about Tartan in Thailand..........eek has come up with a compelling plan for us to have a traditional Hogmanay do in Chiang Mai. Being eek, and ever gracious, she mentioned it might be difficult for the expat community to get hold of the full regalia for the do, however a bit of tartan should be easy enough done.

So here's the cunning plan........I'll book a place which in my opinion is the best location to see in the Bells at CM, you've all got 5 months notice of the event so you can't say you weren't forewarned biggrin.png

The place can hold about 80-100 people and theblether will front the first 25,000 baht for the do........eek will confirm that contrary to opinion we Scots are not tight with money tongue.png

Nationality is no barrier you'll be pleased to hear, we'll even let the English in......as long as your wearing a bit of Tartan biggrin.png

    T'is on order!

Eddie, if you go out on a limb, you can order this one as well:

    post-76988-0-40469100-1343548633_thumb.j

This was the one I was going to get. I hope I will be out of hospital by New Year as my missus misunderstood and thought I was going to order this (the one below) to wear. It was obviously for her, honest.............tongue.png

  9. Theyre of no use to anyone. Filthy soi dogs.Put them all down and spend the money on more worthwhile ventures.

Did you not see the collars on some of the dogs in the cages? I don't think they are all soi dogs.

That opens another door to where did they come from in the first place. Were people given official permission to round the strays up and how much was paid for each dog? Where did the money go if that is the case. Or did someone take it off their own back to round them up themselves? 700 dogs is a lot of rounding up if you're doing it illegally!

I would imagine. Had to add that before some smart@ss asks how I know....................thumbsup.gif

There are pickups running around all over the place picking them up and I imagine delivering them to a central point. Some of the dogs would have been sold to them by the owners.I have been told that my black dog would fetch more than 2000 baht over the border and the white one around 800 baht. They are not for sale at any price.

Same as my dogs Ron, not for any price! That said, they don't run the streets.

My point in that post was whether the gathering of the dogs is legal or is it government sponsored. I know that here in Phits, if you have a problem with soi dogs, you can get in touch with the municipality and they will arrange for the dogs to be rounded up (if enough complaints have been made).

So, do the dogs source from the government, or is it an illegal operation? I am curious as I don't know the answer to this.

  10. Are the dogs gonna be released on the streets again?bah.gif

    You would hope not.

Disagreeing with GK here (in an earlier post), but Euthanasia will be the final solution for the majority of these rescued animals. This is where medical sense overtakes the religious view that nothing should be killed.

There will be a percentage of these put up for adoption, but for those with ailments, the cheapest and most humane solution will be Euthanasia.

    Edited for clarity

  12. I agree. That's what makes it odd to me that some have never bothered to do this. Why are they here I wonder?

Afraid of being called a troll

Afraid of being told to go back where they came from

    Afraid of being flamed

Afraid of looking like an idiot

Afraid they have nothing to contribute

Afraid of being told to 'search for it'.

I'm sure there are more reasons but these are pretty much at the top from what I've seen of the forum. wink.png

Not forgetting the English spelling police.

Especially the Englich spelling police. Its like taking your work home with you............tongue.png

  13. The girls in the bars are just following what they have been told to do by the owner or the head waiter/waitress. There is nothing better than the "never ending glass" (personal opinion) to keep "bums on seats". Depending on the bar, some will ask do you want another bottle, some will just keep them coming until told to stop. These, from experience, can be interesting adventures! If the waitress is pretty, then that is an added bonus.

As for the "beer girls", they also are briefed as to what is expected of them (as regards serving) and they will adapt very quickly if they get the added money for every bottle sold. Not many overweight girls with squints or body odour problems hired for this.............wink.png

BJ also raised a very good point earlier in the thread; respect your waitress! They have a hard enough job as it is without being mauled and abused by the customer. Remember where you came from.....................thumbsup.gif

  14. I see some of the picts got out, the English/Romans should have built Hadrian's Wall a bit higher

We're quite aware that the Romans built the wall to prove to the World that they had cattled the English but couldn't beat the Scots........you really shouldn't remind people about that. coffee1.gif

I am a Geordie I was on the wall trying to keep you out of sanddance's land

You Geordies were virtually Scots at the time, it was the Treaty of York in 1237 that created the border as we know it now.....amusingly once the Romans had built the wall they realized they would need to look both directions at once as you Geordies are as daft as us biggrin.pngdrunk.gif

I was told that the Geordies were responsible for you lot. Something to do with sex and a pig and throwing something over the wall?

Still, it was a Scouser that told me that, so I will go for the Treaty of York in 1237..................tongue.png

  15. The drawcard for most of us males is thailand allows us to be "men".

It has nothing to do with been a sexpat.

The fact is, we as men, no matter what age, weight, short or tall, can smile at a woman and she will smile back, thailand makes us feel worthy, alive, virile and manly!!

In our countries of origin the laws have become so politically correct to even smile at an unknown female is bordering on abuse.

seriously mate, this is utter hogwash.

i have never lived or visited anywhere i was not allowed to be a man.

Unless you have woken up trussed with duct tape and wearing a french maids outfit with your bits missing, reach between your legs next time you forget your gender.

Note to self: If ever invited out for a drink with Nocturn, make sure you pick the bar...............blink.png

And don't stay out too late; respect your limits.................thumbsup.gif

  16. Maybe we can start a non-biased poll asking if the temperature adjusted flavored urine Starbucks is serving is worth the grossly inflated prices they sell it at.

Wow, Nisa! Where did that come from? Starbucks is the world’s largest and most successful coffee brand. Your distain for Starbucks, may be because it is out of your price range. Urine??? I think not!coffee1.gif

    I hope not.....................sick.gif

  17. If they are serious about tourists welfare, then awareness should be the first priority, followed by security.

Produce a booklet (or book!) highlighting the hazards and what to look out for. If the tourist is aware then that is the first step to his/her/their safety.

Of course this will never happen unfortunately.....................sad.png

How many volumes would be needed??????

Yep, you would have to give each family a Kindle and e-book it up!.........tongue.png

They might be able to increase the order of and use the new tablets for the schools, reckon thet should last long enough for a 2 week/3 week holiday period. Anything over this, it would need to be a Kindle.....................wink.png

  18. I wonder what the job description of a police volunteer would be? Manning a VCP. If he holds no powers then why would he be there? At 35y.o. I doubt he would just be wetting the coffee.

Edit: The line about him manning a VCP was from the mentioned fact in the OP:

"Police have filed charges against a traffic volunteer who was caught in an Internet video clip kicking another person's motorbike after it failed to stop at a checkpoint in Bangkok's Bang Kho Laem district"

What is a VCP? Did you just make that up?

Vehicle Check Point. Terminology we used in UK, whether static or mobile.

  19. Am I reading this wrong or what? If it was a police checkpoint, then it is there for a reason. If it is acceptable to let people pass through the checkpoint if that is their want, without being checked then what is the point of having it there in the first place?

I see no problem with what the volunteer did in this instance; he was preventing someone crashing the checkpoint. It is better being kicked off a bike than ending up with half a dozen rounds in your back!

What if, and this is pure speculation, the rider or passenger were carrying weapons or drugs? The same volunteer would be treated as an outstanding officer instead of being in the position now of facing disciplinary action for doing his job because of public opinion.

Just sayin' Look at the picture from both sides.....................thumbsup.gif

What if.. What if.... Have a look at the video and this clown's actions again. You think kicking kids off a motorbike when all they are doing is probably trying to avoid a police shakedown is appropriate do you. Maybe he should have kicked them a few times too?

How many 'civilised" countries do you know that would tolerate this sort of behaviour from a "police volunteer" ?

It's good to see action being taken and hopefully he won't be allowed to "volunteer' again.

If the kids on the motorbike failed to stop at a police road block, then they were breaking the law. If the kids were prevented from fleeing the scene by someone kicking them off the bike then well done for the person using inititive. You state that they were probably trying to avoid a police shakedown? Where is the evidence of this? Nobody can be sure, based on the video.

You ask about civilised countries? If someone crashed a VCP where I came from, for sure they would have been shot. And that is deemed as a civilised country!

Police road block?! What police road block???!!!

As for where you come from that's totally irrelevant and given I assume you mean the US (where else do people actively encourage shooting people out of hand) you make quite the case to do the exact opposite... civilised? Deemed by who as civilised exactly? That huge % of US citizens that have never left home soil and have nothing to compare it to?

See my post #57. My thought process is based on the OP where it states that the accused was manning a police checkpoint.

The comment about where I came from was replying to Baerboxer, and your assumption to where I come from is way off the mark!

I came from a quiet little fishing village on the east coast of Northern Ireland. Called Belfast.

Hope you notice the reference to "came from"!.....................thumbsup.gif
