  1. ...evasive action would suggest 'something to hide'.....or....'guilty of something'.......

What a strange comment. In relation to this case I would suggest perhaps he didn't recognise the authority of a random guy on the street detaining him or possibly wished to avoid yet another in a long line of shake downs by the Bib...

Of course the facts of the case would indicate that he had nothing to hide and was guilty of nothing other than being assaulted. These two points should help you decider the evidence here and come up with a relevant conclusion...

    1. Has the victim been detained for questioning or charged with anything?

    2. Has the man that kicked the young man and his girlfriend been detained and charged with anything?

You seem to forget that police were on the scene and witnessed the events. Surely if they felt there was anything remotely possible to pin on the young man they would have done? I wonder how much bearing the independent filming of the case has on this and it's outcome? I'd be willing to bet the headline would read a little differently if no-one other than the police were on the scene...

And generally speaking of course evasive action could equally suggest you were trying to avoid an accident, a projectile or physical assault...

I don't think anyone can be sure what happened here based on the video. You see the two motorbikes coming into the shot stage right, then the alleged wrong-doer kicking at the first bike and connecting with the second. There is no sign of a road block in the shot.

The police also came into the shot stage right, so nobody knows (unless they were there) if the road block (as described in the OP) had already been crashed and the volunteer had chased them round the corner.

  2. Now the problem is how are they supposed to stop the critters if they're going to be prosecuted for a kick stop........who is the freakin do gooder driving around with a video cam rolling in his windshield anyway?

Cheers Chinook. At least someone is looking at it from the other side. Still don't think the guy did wrong, he was just doing his job.

Don't think even a Thai court would see it that way. Remember, this guy is NOT a policeman. According to the law it is assault and battery, pure and simple.

Read in another paper that the guy strenuously denies being a police volunteer, again adding to the assault charge, if true.

I wonder what the job description of a police volunteer would be? Manning a VCP. If he holds no powers then why would he be there? At 35y.o. I doubt he would just be wetting the coffee.

Edit: The line about him manning a VCP was from the mentioned fact in the OP:

"Police have filed charges against a traffic volunteer who was caught in an Internet video clip kicking another person's motorbike after it failed to stop at a checkpoint in Bangkok's Bang Kho Laem district"

  3. Always amazes me, how many fall into being pimps out here and yet claim they are just running a bar.

Almost always ends with problems due to police/drugs/stealing/heavies etc, then they complain....hello you area pimp of sorts working wth prostitutes in Thailand what did you expect....Muppets

As they say, if its got t1ts or an engine, it is going to cause tears sometime...........wink.png

  4. Starbucks coffee is some of the worst around, the staff are pretty useless and you have to pay for wi-fi there.

Does anyone remember the old days before wifi when you would meet with people for a chat and a coffee face to face? It seems now that you need wifi to have a coffee and communicate with friends sitting at the next table.

    No

That is for text messaging while you are on your facebook with your friends half a world away. Who when you get home you will text message with while you facebook with your friends half a world away.

Yep, you have a point there Hellodolly. Just think if the text service was down you would have to revert to that outdated system of communication called verbal conversation......................blink.png

Still, technology has provided an answer to that in the many VOIP packages available. Conversation is dead.

    RIP

  5. Am I reading this wrong or what? If it was a police checkpoint, then it is there for a reason. If it is acceptable to let people pass through the checkpoint if that is their want, without being checked then what is the point of having it there in the first place?

I see no problem with what the volunteer did in this instance; he was preventing someone crashing the checkpoint. It is better being kicked off a bike than ending up with half a dozen rounds in your back!

What if, and this is pure speculation, the rider or passenger were carrying weapons or drugs? The same volunteer would be treated as an outstanding officer instead of being in the position now of facing disciplinary action for doing his job because of public opinion.

Just sayin' Look at the picture from both sides.....................thumbsup.gif

How about they set up a good roadblock.. marked and such and make sure it cant be passed. Do it a legal way. Check cars too when they are at it. Not go for motorcycles only like they almost always do because they have no status or protection.

Agree robblok, there is that; I nearly didn't comment earlier because it does give people the excuse to crash the one in the video because it isn't properly defined and the motorcyclist has the excuse that he didn't see it for what it was.

Also agree with the car checks as well, including foreigners; if you are going to do it, do it properly! Funny, I have noticed over the last couple of years that the police here (Phitsanulok) have been doing just that. It seems that the "fear" of seeing a white face when the window has been wound down has diminished.

But, back to the OP; I still don't think the police guy was in the wrong in that he was preventing someone crashing the VCP.

  7. Can any of you elaborate on WHY you "like" or "love" it in Thailand? I bet you can't. Your comments are no more useful than the guys who bash without solid argument.

Very good question and difficult to answer. My main reason is that all my clothes are here...............thumbsup.gif

But unfortunately, that won't make the centre-spreads of the tabloids because it isn't really a bad thing. It is the sh1t stories about all that is bad that get published and that is the message that is spread to the masses, normally written by some tosser that has never been here, or if he/she has, never been out of his hotel.

  8. First of all what on earth did they think they would find in the go-go bar ?

But anyway. The noodle shop next door to me sells 2 dishes, they make over 100k B per month.

My friend I go cycling with, only sells pad seeow and is sending his daughter through university in London.

One or two months decent earnings would pay for the start up costs on a food trolley to sell these or Som tam etc. etc. Don't tell me there is a Esarn girl anywhere that doesn't know how to make som tam.

The girls who worked in bars I used to drink in, as said before would openly talk to me knowing I'm not interested in what was on offer, most had many sponsors (which is easy to tell anyway by the passing around of 'English love phrases' book and the amount of not cheap phones they have ) while they sat around drinking with their mates everynight. This is what most girls are looking for. Sure as hell they didn't like what they were there for, but once they had their sponsors they picked and choose their customers. Young guys or guys gulliable enough to make promises to them.

There sure are many girls feeding families. Many do have self esteem problems. Some are working this at night so they can look after their kid in the day while a family member does at night . Some are working this way plus a day job to pay for schooling and some of the girls I knew left to get real jobs and some respect- self and from other people, but many are there as they don't want to work or are just plain party girls. To believe they are all there due to no choice is naive. There are other job opportunities and better paying ones if they are willing to reinvest the money and work,(That as well as keeping the money away from the drunk layabout boyfriend/mother/father etc or just away from the parents who won't give up the idea of being land owning farmers and get a paying job), but as many guys who have set girls up in businesses find out there are many who really aren't prepared to work and that is why they are there.

The film is sensationalist media studies graduate rubbish at best.

That's an eye-opener - how does a noodle-shop make 100k a month? Surely that's just the turnover, not the net profit? I'd like to know more about that.

Yep, must be a pretty big noodle shop. Would certainly question that as the "made" amount

  9. "I have received information from reliable sources," Krissada said.

Again, the question has to be raised as to where the intelligence network of the government (police, army, etc) is. What happened to the information from so-called reliable source; who was it passed onto or is this guy just blowing his own trumpet?

The governor is a straight up guy. He was governor of Yala for close to 4 yrs. and could not get a replacement after many requests - he was promised a short(ish) stint there...). If he says he has a reliable source, then I believe him.

But the issue is what did he do with that information? It is a logical thought process that if you have information that could cause the deaths of innocent people, and you are unable to do anything about it, then you give that information onto departments that can.

This is the point I was trying to make, are these information paths available or used? I should say secure paths as carbine1125 pointed out earlier....wink.png

  10. I have a local bar here on K Samui that charges reasonable rates ..eg. chang/leo 50 bht..sing 60 bht and all other drinks at realistic prices...All day/night whenever open...he still makes 50% gross profit on the drinks(100% mark up) ...and is happy with this profit from a crowd of loyal regulars, no bar girls/ boys for rent as part of his business..all the amenities of an english pub with sun coming through the windows, oh and smoking allowed......

We all know we can buy a Large Leo or Chang for less than 50bht from a 7/11 ( sometimes nextdoor to a bar )..why do bar owners feel it is OK to charge 70 - 80bht to take the top off a small bottle and push across to you in a sponge sleeve.....or to charge 80- 100 bht for a measure of Sangsum from a large bottle (at least 15 measures ) that cost them approx 260 bht.??

Do away with Happy hour ..lets have Happy Day/ night.... ..oh the bar in question ... Oneway Bar ..run by graham

Maybe you should try running a bar yourself and see how cheap you can do it for. Overheads are overheads whatever way you want to look at it, and if the bar doesn't make a profit, why would you want to keep it open?

I ran one for 12 years over here, so do know what I'm talking about.

  11. Thanks chrisinth

You have made my morning a most enjoyable one.

I am now well and truly 'motivated' for a relaxing afternoon.

    Not a problem!

If anyone out there have any more to add to this little collection, feel free to get them uploaded. I'm sure (I know) there are some of you out there with a similar sense of humour...............smile.png

  12. While it is an indicator against manual labour, i am told it is a good luck superstition.

If you look at the hands on any given buddah image you will see that the fingers are all essentially the same length.

the fingernail is an effort to extend the length of the pinkie to the length of the other fingers.

Its good luck that he doesn't have to do manual work...................wink.png
