  1. Your photos are really very good. But if you see photography as an art, then you must know that different people interpret that art in different ways.

Your photos and commentary have one point of view. And that's fine, provided that you understand that that is only one point of view.

There are many other photos of the red shirts that show a very different "picture" than yours. That is another point of view.

It is only a collage of those points of view that really provide a base from which to judge a situation...and even then the judgments will vary.

And that is the value of photography.

    Thanks, phetaroi.

I certainly would never claim that my photos have anything to do with art. I just capture what I see when I go out into my neighborhood.

My neighborhood is under siege - that's an extraordinary situation and I just want to keep the images of what I see when I leave my apartment. If I can capture the mood of the people that I encounter then I'm satisfied - the little boy is just a good example for that: I could feel a certain anxiety, confusion, tiredness and sorrow with many people down there the other day and I think with that little boy I was able to capture that mood. That's just what I saw - no intent here to give any particular political message, but rather some sort of eye witness report.

I have got a generally neutral and friendly attitude when I go into my neighborhood. I have got to live with my new neighbors otherwise I would have to lock myself in. If I am approached by friendly people I treat them friendly no matter what what color they are. I am not looking for a political message here and I'm not going into the hard core areas with barricades nor am I actively looking for scenes with a particular message. I just capture what I see when I leave my appartment and go for a walk and for some shopping in my neighborhood. I am not wearing red but everyone is giving me a friendly welcome and many actively want to pose for the camera - why not do them the favor and show these images? I capture what I see here - if there is a political message on the picture then it is what unfolds just in front of me. If I actively wanted to compose a political message from any point of view there would be thousands of opportunities around to capture much stronger images.

The nice thing is that everyone who has got a strongly biased political point of view can interpret many things into these photos - no matter from what side he would be coming from. I leave these kind of interpretations up to the observer.

<Edit: By the way I don't get why you are saying that my photos AND commentary show one point of view. My statement that the little boy expressed the mood that I could feel down there and innocent children don't lie is a statement of facts and not a point of view.>

  2. in Soi Radom 3 (nearly opposite the phon police station) there is a dog shop, I think they do grooming & sell supplies. Might be worth a visit to see if they sell or know of where to buy.

Boo Thank you for the info, i will check it out on my return

  3. I will have some pictures of the new dog house soon, bamboo and sheet construction, about 20 M2 dogs and kids love it.

Look forward to seeing the new kennel

on another note, are the two Labrador pups still for re-homing, I tried to send you a PM but it looks like you never received it

  4. I am presently in France at the moment, all the news media are indicating that the ash clouds are not budging and that the flight cancellation may go on for several days.

    Related content

Air traffic control company Nats announced that the ash cloud caused by an erupting Icelandic volcano was still covering the UK and the flight ban would continue as a result.

There is currently no end to the disruption in sight with volcanologists warning that the eruptions from Mount Eyjafjallajokull could continue for months.

Officials said airlines would continue to be subject to restrictions for as long as ash billowed into British airspace.

A spokesman for airport operator BAA advised passengers not to travel to airports and to keep in touch with their airlines.

Graeme Leitch of the Met Office said a change in the wind direction might mean flight restrictions could be lifted but there was no indication that any such change was imminent.

  5. HI Brian

Although not from your area, I have only once seen them for sale and I think it was near a Pattaya ghetto area.

I would get pen and paper out, draw a little plan and then leave it to a local to 'knock something up.' If it not exactly what you want, you would not have wasted much money.

Thanks Dave, good suggestion and probably the quickest and also cheapest way to go

    cheers Brian

    Brian,

I built a kennel for my dog from a single sheet of ply (15mm).

I got the plan from the net. Nice way to spend an afternoon, note, the beer cost more than the kennel.

    Thanks for the info

  7. This should be a good discussion- with a budget of ~1 million Baht you have plenty of choices.

If you're looking for a brand that has in-country dealers and service Honda is out.

The Triumph Tiger 1050 is an awesome go anywhere tour bike with plenty of grunt-

    010688_2008_Triumph_Tiger.jpg

The BMWr1200GS really seems to be top dog for adventure touring and you only have to watch the great series LONG WAY AROUND and LONG WAY DOWN to see how tough and versatile these bikes are.

It just so happens that a friend in Khon Kaen who is 'victim' of the British Pound is selling he immaculate GS- tons of extras, never dropped and WAY less than retail. Not sure if he's posted an ad in the ThaiVisa Classifieds but it's up for sale on the GTRider site and the SecretSoi site. Here's a picture of the bike:

    bmlhs.jpg

    List of accessories etc:

BMW R1200GS 2008. Bought 22Nov 2008 from BKK Motorad in Bangkok. Purchase Price 998,000 Baht. Since fitted, BMW Top Box. SW Motec. Engine guards. Machine Art Cylinderhead guards. Mudsling mudguard, protects the battery and ESA rear motor, Touratech underrack tidy.

New Bags connection tankbag, on its way from the UK with the tank filler clip on fitting, and additional mappocket.

Bike taxed, insured, and warrantied until Nov 2010. Current km 26729. All services at BMW Bangkok or Chiang Mai. New Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres fitted at 20K Km. Never abused, dropped or taken off road. Never missed a beat apart from faulty petrol guage sensor, replaced under warranty.

Another excellent tour bike that's available in Thailand is the Yamaha FJR1300:

    fjr1300_2010_01.jpgprice.jpg 850,000 baht

It looks like a pig but I've ridden it and it handles like a bike half it's size- really an amazing piece of engineering- you have to ride it to believe it!

So, of the choices available here in Thailand those are the three bikes I'd consider: Triumph Tiger 1050, BMW1200GS and Yamaha FJR1300.

Let us know how it goes!

    Happy Trails!

    Tony

Nice looking bikes, are there BMW or Truimph service centres in Khonkaen

  8. Although during a drought water shouldn't be wasted, the actual amount thrown during songkran, is completely insignificant when you consider how much water is used daily for agriculture and manufacturing purposes. It's something like 300 liters for every pair of jeans made and 20 liters to make a plastic bottle that holds 1 liter of Coke. I can't remember the exact figures but for 1 kg of rice produced something like 200 liters of water must be used for the irrigation of that rice.

    Interesting statistics

  9. "Once you submit the documents for a work permit, you must not let your visa expire. Even if you have a double- or triple-entry visa, you cannot leave again without invalidating your work permit papers. If you do have to go out of country and return on the same visa, you must get a re-entry permit from Immigration. The re-entry permit, like a work permit, is valid until your visa expires."

This means that your work permit expires when you leave the country even if you have a multiple B or O entry visa?

What is the point of having a multiple entry visa then if you have to get re-entry permits anyway?

    Very usefull information, thank you

  10. Nice house, looks like they did a great job on it.

I'm looking at building in Mukdahan most likely starting March or April.

Do you have the builders details?

Also, where did you find the majority of your fit out items?

    Thanks Craig

Craig, I have built in Mukdahan and good reliable builders ae few and far between, the best contactors are in demand all the time and you will have to wait until they can fit you in! We bought all our own fit out items in Ubon and Khon Kaen. It took a year to build because we were in no hurry and monitored the build throughout. There are still ongoing upgrades that I am doing myself but the house is in good shape.

I wish you all the best for your build and there is plenty of advice out there when you come up against problems (which you will :) )

Insi- The new house in Nakhon Phanom looks great glad you didn't go for wooden window frames.. once you're all settled in and cosy the jingjoks, ants, termites, moths etc etc will start decorating your nice shiny house for you! :D

    All the best for 2009

    Nice house

  11. ^see the idiots are out tossing water at mopeds. :)

  12. I stumbled upon this topic by accident and it seems strange for that people would debate it and even make some silly comments on it without knowing the facts. Anyway if anyone has or wants to share any information with me about Alan they are quite welcome to get in touch..

My deepest sympathy to the entire family Bren. I was Alan's next door neighbour and was the one that raised the alrm by informing the landlord of not having seen Alan for a while coupled with the fact that by Monday there was a tench in my room which in fact was from his room. He was very strong the last time we chatted, no signs of any ailment. here is my e-mail address [email protected]. Drop mem a line with your address so that I can brief u with the details. Take heart.

    Jude

    RIP Alan
