  1. Don't believe her for a minute if you treasure your family jewels.

I agree - mine has made it quite clear that a sharp knife and my genitals would come into contact if she found me screwing around.

Let me tell you the story of my wedding day (Thai wedding in the village), when my lovely, calm, demure wife took a coconut apart with a machete in about 6 seconds flat. The look on her face convinced me that I would never need another condom in my future, and I don't.

    Good luck, though!

  2. The closest Thai Consulate/Embassy is Seattle, WA, I believe, do I go there for this visa before I return?

Use the honorary consulate in Portland. Sounds like you might be close enough to go in person, but they work just fine via mail. See the website below, and use the contact info to discuss your situation. They'll issue you a Non Imm O if you're over 50, and can show financial info. Mary at Portland is easy to deal with, and your situation should be a slam dunk.

With the Non Imm visa, no problem getting on the airplane to Thailand. Then, everything should be the same to get your one-year retirement extension (i.e., the necessary financials, address info, etc will be the same). The only difference will be, if you enter on your Non Imm visa (vice your re-entry permit), you'll probably have to wait 60 days before going to Immigration to get your one-year extension. No biggy, I would think.

Thanks for your very good reply, and I am right next-door to Portland...house in Vancouver, WA.

For the other questions, my current visa is a retirement, have had it for about four years, and I do have an open return ticket for three months, but can change it to open for one year if needed.

  3. More recently, when I asked her the time:-

    Me: What's the time darling?

    Her: What, now?

Mine was almost exactly the same.

Me: "Honey, what time is it?"

    She: "You mean today?"

Me; (somewhat sarcastically, before I understood there is no such thing as sarcasm) "No honey, I mean tomorrow

She: (With the look down the nose to let me know how really stupid I am) "You know I am native Thai Speaker?"

  4. Get the re-entry in case you can return earlier (you do not have to stay - a real-estate agent can act for you with insurance/contractors if you wish). If you do need a visa as said it can be done from anywhere by mail. Forms can be downloaded or asked for by phone.

Thank you lopburi3 and CharlieH, very helpful replies. Believe me, I don't want to stay there...winter in the Pacific Northwest or home in Thailand with my lovely wife and daughter?? Tough choice!

I'll do the best I can. In this case, I am the contractor so I'll just have to see how well the weather treats me for the repairs.

  5. Re-entry has nothing to do with 90 day reports - if not here you do not report until 90 days after return.

If you are sure return will be later than you extension date no need to buy re-entry - just obtain a new non immigrant O visa for your return (or O-A for up to two years stay without needing a new extension) before you return. A re-entry only allows return before same date as current permitted to stay. So you start over but you have to provide the same material every year so the only extra will be a new non immigrant visa entry.

    Lopburi

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm in a kind of gray area on this, as I cannot be sure of my exact return. Had a fire at my home in the US, heading into winter, not the best weather for repair. If it turns out that I must stay past March renewal time, then where do I get the new non-immigrant O visa (consider that I'm pretty stupid about this, because I am). The closest Thai Consulate/Embassy is Seattle, WA, I believe, do I go there for this visa before I return?

Remember I'm a little stupid, so please speak slowly.

  6. Hi

I did some searching but couldn't find anything specific to my question. I am residing in Thailand on a Retirement Visa that is due for renewal March 26, 2012. I will be on an extended trip to the US starting end of November that may last until past my renewal date.

I will be obtaining a Re-Entry permit before I leave, so I should not have an issue about the 90 Day report that now is due in December, but what does this do to my Retirement Visa if I don't renew it on the proper date? Do I have to start all over again?

Maybe a dumb question, and I will have the chance to visit Thai Immigration to get the Re-entry before I leave, just not sure I will get a correct answer from them about what will happen if I'm not here at the time for my renewal.

Help from experience is greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks :jap:

  7. Hi

If you are sending EMS, then the form has a section for Customs Declaration. It asks (1) Document (2) Gift (3) Sample (4) Merchandise, then wants to know: Contents, Value and Net weight.

I've sent a few out using EMS, never had to pay outgoing Customs.

    Good Luck

  8. I went to the Nation building over the weekend to pack

but turned out there was more heavy lifting work required, so I wasnt of much use

cousin went to the red cross, which now seem more like where I can contribute a bit more

however, seems the immediate need now is for filling sandbags.....

I have been doing that in the village and of course donating to the village fund for pumps and sandbags. Its selfish because i live in the village too. But I put in a lot of time and more money then most.

We gave through the village donation.... food, water, money and some needed items for ladies (the lovely wife's idea...good one, I thought). Happy to help, hope something is learned from this flood experience.:jap:

  9. Have Google Adsense. They won't send EFT to my Thailand bank.

Need a bank with Routing Numbers that google can send my payments deposits to.

Something that I don't have to sign up for in person, sending the debit card to my USA address is ok, I can have my card forwarded here.

Then your only option is to open a Bangkok Bank Account and then use the Bangkok Bank New York Routing number to have your payments sent, and then Bangkok Bank , will credit them to your Thai Bangkok Bank account

    See this for details:

    http://www.bangkokba...from%20USA.aspx

As far as the Australian poster is concerned are you talking about EFTS or SWIFT Wires to and from your AUS ANZ Bank ? If so, you are the first to report that any Thai Bank other than Bangkok Bank will do electronic transfers and not just SWIFT Wire transfers (not counting the two US Banks with only retail branches in Bangkok, HSBC and CitiBank )

Agree with Langsuan Man on this one, I have my US Social Security deposited into Bangkok Bank New York and then transferred to my branch here, and also have a PayPal transfer of funds set up through Bangkok Bank New York to sent here in Thailand.

  10. I live in a rural area of Ratchaburi about 13 km outside of Ratchaburi city. We have no telephone lines. I was just lucky one day a TOt van went by the house and I stopped it and asked. They told me I could get internet but no telephone service.

We are in a village about 12 km west of Prasat.

TOT came to the village center and had a meeting saying they would erect a wireless tower if 16 customers in the area would commit. I had previously had TOT satellite (Ipstar) and it was horrible, but thought I'd give it another try. I was using air cards until then, again, very very slow.

They put up the tower, charged us 500 baht to run a phone line wire to the house (no phone service, this is ADSL internet only), and on New Year's Eve I had internet. And it is the fastest I have experienced here in the village EVER!

Good luck with yours. Not much more frustrating than 20th Century technology in the 21st Century.

  11. <br>Agree with Linux suggestion although CPU spec and ram is not too shabby and as long as hardware is intact it should run XP quite well with a fresh install and perhaps bigger hard drives.<br><br>I would go with sata hard drives even if you need an ide-sata adapter or pci sata card as ide drives are pricier and becoming extinct. sata is faster and works with slide out trays natively.<br><br>Linux is great for internet cause there are relatively few hijacks/trojans/viruses. Windows exploits gets more sophisticated and so does the solution/fix software.<br><br>You could use a slide out HD tray and swap sata HD's very easily to use either Linux or XP/MS<br><br>I still use a Dell PC circa 2003-4 and it runs XP very well. Also have a Linux box and a mac.<br><br>I have built/upgraded/repaired many computers.<br>

When I started looking into how to go about this, I started to learn a little about Linux. I am very impressed with what I have read so far and will probably go to it eventually. It does require quite a bit of new learning for me, which requires a lot of time, but I'll figure out how to get that done as well.

I do want to say thank you again to all for your help. This is what a forum should be, and it is quite nice to hear all of the suggestions.

  12. First of all, it is not the RAM that is full, but perhaps the HDD.

Again, What is the full model number of your machine? It is likely that you will need an IDE HDD, as opposed to SATA.

    Jiu-Jitsu

The original information on this I have says

    Model No.: Aspire Series.

We purchased it from one of the shops in Seri Center in about January, 2007. I will disconnect everything on it tomorrow and search for a better model number. Would it be on the back of the tower, or someplace similar ? The brochures I am looking at for model numbers also have part numbers, but I assume they are the part number of the particular brochure.

Again, thanks for all the help.

  13. Have had mine since January, 2011, no real issues...just a day or so now and then of downtime, but repair has been prompt.

The only complaint I had was at initial installation and it was probably due to language problem. They said I needed "modem" and sold me one for 1000 baht. It was a "router", a very cheap router that would not allow network for other household computers. I already had a good router, was already networked from previous satellite with TOT (terrible service with that!).I switched out the routers, problem solved, but they wouldn't take back or refund their "modem".

All else OK, don't have 10 Mb, have what they claim is 6 Mb but works well and fast enough for me. I'm in the sticks, though...Surin area, not Pattaya.

    Good luck!

  14. Many thanks for all the replies, gives me a good start on how to tackle this. You are correct Darrel, the RAM is just full, no space left, so that's a first thing to do...get a new hard drive.

I have no particular reason or need for Windows 7, very comfortable with XP so maybe I'll just get a new one and go with that. Did the Hitman as you suggested Jiu-Jitsu, already have been doing regular Malware scans, but I'll try getting the new hard drive and a new OS and see how it goes.

Again, thanks very much for your help!

  15. I was having problems with my desktop and decided to trade it in on a new one. The local dealer didn't want it. The case is a good one and all the drives were fine. I had a new ASUS mother board, a new power supply, a new dual core CPU and since my old RAM wouldn't work in the new motherboard, three gig of new style RAM. It cost me a little over 8,000 baht including labor. Since I was basically starting over, I put legal Windows 7 Pro in it also. It hasn't missed a beat.

Thanks Gary A, that's what I'm looking for. I'm not particularly stupid, just ignorant. I'll take it into the shop and see what they say.

  16. Okay, I've got an older Acer Aspire desktop PC that has "crashed", meaning it ain't the same as it used to be, probably got a virus. Can't run programs, can't do a System Restore, can't do anything without a lot of effort. I want to make it new, but don't want to spend/replace more than needed. How do I find out what is bad?

It has a Pentium 4 CPU, 3.06 GHz, 3.07 GHz, 1.43 GB RAM. There is no memory left. It uses the original pre-installed pirated version of XP Home, so I don't have a disc to start over again. What I need to know is how to determine if I need a new power supply and/or motherboard. I will want to upgrade a better CPU and then go to Windows 7 as an operating system, so will increase RAM at the same time.

I've been busy reading, searching, watching YouTubes etc trying to figure out how to build this thing back up right, so I turn to you guys for some help.

I have the case to start with, how do I know my power supply is adequate? Do I need to go to a different (newer) motherboard to work with a bigger/better CPU? My usage of the PC is primarily for files, word processing and web surfing, I am not a gamer, so I don't need much in speed.

I guess bottom line is : do I need to take this to a shop and have them do it, or is it something that a pretty handy guy with all the needed tools can do himself? Just looking for some help and some good advice, and thank you in advance for your input.

Did Customs tag you for any more money when it arrived by post? I am looking to buy a kindle through Amazon, shipped from the US, and I worry that the $139, plus shipping at about $25 will vastly increase once Customs gets wind of it. Were you lucky or no??

  18. I wasn't going to apologize to the nice Mr. Sinbin anyway, but if YOU ever need an apology....no problem

Maybe in my haste I said that wrong? I don't think you need to apologize to anyone about anything in this thread.

I was merely thanking you for your post, you said nothing wrong.

    mario299

  19. As I said 'Mario299' an apology will be accepted if your able to bite your tongue and post one.[/b]

Looks like Mario299 get a pass on the apology?

I wasn't going to apologize to the nice Mr. Sinbin anyway, but if YOU ever need an apology....no problem

  20. The above 2 quotes came from a government website. http://www.thaiembas...immigration.php

As I said 'Mario299' an apology will be accepted if your able to bite your tongue and post one.

Not necessarily doubting the accuracy of the information, but are we sure this is a 'government website'.

It looks like a front for Siam Legal and erroneously refers to "Retirement Visas" rather than extensions.

    Cardholder

I won't respond, reply or acknowledge Sinbin in any manner, definitely not worth any time or effort, but Cardholder you have an interesting point. I also find it interesting that Sinbin's "proof" by use of an "government website" would be one that allows advertising by Siam Legal on the website.

    Funny that, eh?
