Long answer, yes you can. Next renewal just put 180 day extension(or whatever meets your needs) instead of 1 year. I looked into this when I wanted to change my renewal date from January to June-September due to the long lineups at immigration during high season. I didn't proceed as I acquired a DTV visa instead.
