  1. Ah, the cultural superiority comes out. Much of our awareness for road safety has come from 40+ years of public education. Thailand has barely started down that road.

I'm frankly amazed when I go to Europe or the US and see people riding bicycles without helmets. Why? They've been compulsory in Australia for 25 years.

Yet despite the "superiority" and their years of education, the supposedly civilised westerner regress to the level of the lowly natives at first available opportunity. Witness the number of foreigners larking away without helmets in Pattaya, some with their infants/children...simply because they perceive an atmosphere of lawlessness, so they can get away with it, safety issues are ignored. They are the really stupid ones because they ought to know better. Superiority? only in their dreams.

  2. Breviet is pronounced as the English sounds Bree -- Vee-- Et. ---- could also be Pree -- vee -- et, depending on origin. The viet at the end is the first syllable in Vietnam. It basically means hello. But nobody has answered my question about Siberia ??

Because it's so bloody cold and isolated that you'd be learning a foreign language in a great hurry to escape the clutches of mother Russia.:P

  3. The food court in the basement of central is a real haven for them. It's easily the best food court for people watching because it is not skewed towards usual Pattaya crowd of so- called Hamsun men with their "cashier" girl friends/grand daughters.

Had a very bad pad Thai at some ridiculous price but that's another story.

  4. If this kind of crap does not stop there wont be any tourists left in Thailand ! ( i know where therre are humans there is crime ) But it is now getting too much

This has to be a one more nail in the coffin post

The trouble is that no matter how many nails, the tourists keep coming by the bus loads. If only they'd all stay away, then there might be some pressure to make substantive improvements to the city, not Mickey mouse crackdowns and other press releases from time to time.

  5. water is routinely cut off for several hours each day but not a big problem as we all have large tanks. maybe it happened before but I only noticed this year.

The well connected Thai person down the road who has a large garden gets the fire brigade in to house down his lawn regularly. His staff arranges it all of course, so as far as the boss is concerned, water is in abundant supply. all he needs is police out rider to clear the roads of commoners, then he will think there are no traffic issues too.

  6. As one capable of reading Thai, I can tell you it's damn near impossible to reproduce the Thai vowels sounds with the English alphabet.  Not trying to be malicious, but your question seems absurd.

The Chinese successfully implemented pinyin, their romanised version. And I daresay Chinese is also tonal and have sounds not easily replicated.

And when romanising, they probably won't use "English alphabet" but some thing called international phonetics alphabet. It's not a new thing, this transliteration and Romanising of a language.

I got a feeling it's a question of control over the language...can't have foreigners playing around with it and becoming better at it than a Thai!!!

  7. How can a person represent such a racist party when he has a Thai wife?

Having a Thai wife does not necessarily mean a person is not a racist. Having a sister does not mean one cannot be a misogynist. Someone in another thread thought having a gay brother means he cannot possibly be a homophobe.

I know of a Pattaya guy who basically looked at his "wife" as the maid cum cook with a bit of sex thrown in.

  8. Perhaps Thailand needs to re-examine the list of occupations that must be filled by Thais. With less than 1% unemployment nationwide, this is only going to become more of a problem as the Thai economy continues to grow.

Less than 1% unemployment? Their measurement must be faulty.

Whatever the employment figure is, the under employment rate must be thru the roof.

  9. The cinemas play the kings anthem, not the national anthem. The 6 pm anthem is the national anthem. There is a difference. I could be wrong, so perhaps someone more knowledgeable can confirm.

I just go with the flow so as not to be arrested!

  10. What about palm oil that is almost always used in street foods? Although opinion is divided, my own feeling is that it is causing my ldl levels to go up since moving here. I don't smoke now, do exercise daily and before coming here, had no cholesterol issues. my doctor reckons palm oil is not as healthy as other vegetable oils.

The 60 year old lady who ran, until recently, a roadside cafe near me would agree with you. She changed to rice bran oil long time ago. She also offered red/brown rice as an alternative to white. Unfortunately she has now moved far away. I'm back now to palm oil and white rice unless I cook at home.

I am avoiding palm oil like the plague, so more home cooking. Whenever I ask what cooking oil outside places use, it's always palm oil. Gee, considering there is some doubt about the healthiness of it, I am surprised there is not much visible debate about it.

  12. it is a pointless discussion, you cant bully a homophobe into admitting their fear, let alone the reasons behind it.

thankfully with each generation a little more of the fear (literally) dies, and eventually people wont be so concerned with the details of another's sexuality.

It will happen eventually.  My brother is gay and one of my good mates (best man at my wedding) is gay.

I put this into the "I've got a Thai wife so I am not racist" category.

  13. OP....If I be so bold as to ask why you want to rent a wreck ?

The roads in Thailand are hazard enough even in a good car.

Surely your life is worth more ?

I have been tempted to rent one to bump into illegally double parked cars, "accidentally" nudge a rental motorcycle occupying a whole lane obstructing traffic, and watch the whole row fall over like dominoes. A Dick parked on the side of a narrow lane and left his door open so cars can't pass; I would love to rip his door off with a wreck of a car.

    :D:P
