There is nothing wrong with kratom if it is used sensibly. That might not apply among younger people.

It is addictive. However, AFAIK it does not cause psychosis as marijuana can, or remove inhibitions, as alcohol does. Its main function seems to be as a painkiller.

Personally, I find it to be far more effective than tramadol for pain relief. Tramadol seems to be the strongest medication legally available in Thailand for that purpose.

many years ago I was introduced to Kratom leaves, we put them in a bottle thai whisky, let it sit for a couple days, then mix w soda: party time! just a one time thing, it's not my kind of herb!

nothing about painkiller, never heard about that before...

Pattaya —Pattaya City officials, led by Mayor Mr. Poramase Ngampiches, recently visited Wong Amat Beach this week to address online allegations of wastewater being released into the sea.

The inspection followed a video circulating online that alleged murky water was being released into Pattaya Bay by some seaside establishments.

Led by Mr. Poramase, the team comprised representatives from the Pattaya City Council, Tourist Police, City Police, and the City Engineering Department.

According to Mr. Poramase, he confirmed that the water observed in the video was actually overflowing rainwater, not wastewater. He explained that heavy rainfall on January 30th had caused rainwater to exceed the capacity of the drainage system in Soi Naklua 16, leading to the temporary overflow which then flowed into the sea as seen in the footage.

A buffet restaurant in Khon Kaen made headlines after a customer was faced with a hefty fine of 9,100 baht for leaving an excessive amount of uneaten food. However, the situation was amicably resolved, resulting in satisfaction on both sides.

Oshinei Khon Kaen, a Japanese buffet restaurant in Khon Kaen, took to Facebook to recount an incident where a group of customers ordered more food than they could consume. The four diners had taken advantage of a come four, pay for three promotion, priced at 1,150 baht per person.

It was their first visit to the restaurant, and perhaps driven by hunger, they ordered a significant quantity of food through the restaurant’s automated system. Staff members confirmed the orders and reiterated the restaurant’s policy on food wastage, which includes a fine of 300 baht per 100 grammes for excessive leftovers, with the option to take the excess food home.

So the smoking rooms in street outlets will cease, people will not buy from those outlets and smoke at home???

    Fantasy land.

    why fantasy land?

I've always done 'my own thing' and intend to keep doing so, even with this new law!

I'm not going to walk outside in the street with a joint in my hand! I do that always in the privacy of my house, there I got the right music, the right atmosphere, the right smoke!

smokingrooms are more for addicts who can't wait, need their fix now...

in ChiangMai there are now way to many 'dispensaries', there's not enough market to cater, so that will filter itself out!

Over the past several days various Thai politicians and government officials have made headlines, at least on Thai language news, with consistent updates on what they call a pressing issue-Elephant pants.

Specifically, their concerns have been around illegal imports of the elephant pants from China and how Thai officials feel the prices are undercutting those of Thai made elephant pants.

Thailand considers elephant pants, commonly seen on tourists and especially backpackers, as a ‘soft power” and fashion symbol for the country. Well, at least some Thai officials do, not everyone is fond of the elephant pants or believe they are particularly fashionable according to recent conflicting and unconfirmed reports from Thailand’s Soft Power Fashion Committee.

Indeed, some netizens have debated if the elephant pants can even be considered a true soft power at all.

The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) president, Chamnan Srisawat, has reassured that the Constitutional Court ruling will not destabilise the government or the country’s tourism sector. He confidently stated that international tourism demand would remain unaffected unless there was severe violence.

Chamnan credited Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government with beneficial tourism-driving initiatives, such as visa-free travel for high-potential markets. Despite governmental stability, Chamnan acknowledged the challenges of attracting 35 million foreign tourists and achieving a revenue of 1.9 trillion baht (US$ 53,467,710,000) this year.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, the honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, suggested it was premature to determine the court ruling’s repercussions.

He warned that legal action against the Move Forward Party (MFP) could lead to political unrest and demonstrations, affecting tourism, exports, credibility, and markets. The extent of these potential consequences, he noted, would rest on the government’s ability to manage the situation effectively, reported Bangkok Post.

A Belgian fugitive, previously convicted in Belgium for charges of attempted murder, has been apprehended in Patong, Thailand.

The 36 year old man, known only by the name Achmal, had been operating as a DJ in a local nightlife establishment for a number of years.

Achmal was taken into custody by Phuket Immigration officers from an apartment in Patong, according to the Deputy Chief of the Immigration Bureau, Police Major General Phanthana Nuchanart. He announced the arrest during a press conference in Bangkok yesterday, January 23. The specifics of Achmal’s apprehension, including the date and location, remained undisclosed, as did the name of the club where he was employed as a DJ.

According to Maj. Gen. Phanthana, Achmal held dual citizenship, with passports issued by Belgium and Morocco. His arrest was in response to a Criminal Court Arrest Warrant, numbered 878/2566, dated December 15, 2023.

The charges laid against Achmal were severe. He was found guilty of attempting to murder another person with premeditation, carrying a firearm without permission, and possession of ammunition spare parts or accessories which were installed on a firearm without permission, as disclosed by Maj. Gen. Phanthana. The Court of Appeal of Brussels had previously sentenced Achmal to a decade in prison, reported The Phuket News.

Counted 3x so far today buying something or service oriented interactions where my transaction is already in process and someone (Thai) walks up, orders or requests while I'm standing there, and the person I'm with immediately serves them first and ignores me, sometimes with a drawn out conversation before they conclude, while I'm standing there waiting.

Is this disrespectful here in Thailand? I thought it was 🤷🏻‍♂️. Feels like a racist Thai first thing.

in my experience this usually happens in tourist areas, when in province a lot less!

Thai Government Officials to Probe Tourist Riding in Convertible with Lion Cub in Pattaya

Pattaya — The Thai National Parks Department is launching an investigation into a foreign man who was spotted driving through the street of Pattaya in a Bentley, accompanied by what appears to be a lion cub in the back seat.

The incident came to light from a viral TikTok video posted by a user named “Ann Isaan Russia (แอน อีสานรัสเซีย)”. The clip clearly depicted a white lion sitting in a luxurious open-roof Bentley, traversing on the busy street of Pattaya.

In the footage, several motorists appeared concerned and somewhat apprehensive about the lion’s presence, given the proximity between them and the animal. However, the lion itself seemed calm and domesticated and appeared to have a collar and leash.

In response to the incident, Mr. Atthaphon Charoenchansa, the Director-General of the Department of National Parks, immediately assigned relevant officials to investigate the incident.

On January 21, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit embarked on an official visit to the Andaman region, with Ranong, the site of the 1-trillion-baht Land Bridge megaproject, as their first stop. The project, expected to generate significant benefits across the southern region, is facing criticism due to its potential environmental impact.

The officials inspected a construction site at Laem Son National Park in the Kapoe district before heading to Laem Ao Ang in the Muang district. Here, they received a comprehensive report from the project committee focusing on areas requiring reclamation and a spatial plan for bridge piers to support the local fishery industry.

The Land Bridge megaproject, which aims to connect Ranong province with Chumphon province, comprises deep-water ports in both provinces, an interconnecting motorway, and a railway system. The project, costing 1 trillion baht (US$28 billion), also aims to alleviate congestion on the Strait of Malacca, through which 60% of the world’s oil supply passes, reported Bangkok Post.

“Constructing a megaproject that links the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea to the world is important to lessen congestion,” stated Prime Minister Srettha. “It will also bring development to the country, as it can influence more foreign investors.”

If Thailand is really going to flip-flop on the law (after already delisting cannabis as an illegal narcotic) and eventually start fining and jailing people for recreational use, especially tourists, then they are going to find themselves awkwardly bucking the growing trend in Western countries where decriminalizing of cannabis for recreational use continues to grow.

Even Germany, seen as a relatively conservative country, is likely to legalize cannabis for recreational use within this year:

    https://www.dw.com/en/german-minister-aims-for-cannabis-legalization-by-spring/a-68042155

In addition to the 23 states in the US that have already legalized cannabis for recreational use (including Washington DC), 8 more are also expected to legalize it within this year.

If Thailand does end up making serious changes to the current laws then the blowback and lawsuits against the government from both growers and retailers losing income (those who invested based on previous government promises) could be sizable. I can see a situation where some ambiguous changes are eventually made to the laws to try and reduce recreational use and then everything gets backpedalled again a year later to exactly the way things are right now.

I guess yr prayers have been heard: today in Thaiger!

A video that has been creating a buzz on social media recently features Ava Pawornwan Verapuchong, a millionaire actress.

The video shows Ava pulling a credit card from her wallet, causing viewers to focus on the card. It is a THE WISDOM (Visa Infinite) card from Kasikorn Thai Bank, which is exclusively for those with deposits and investments starting at 150 million baht.

However, the video has led many to mistakenly believe that Ava’s credit card has a credit limit of up to 150 million baht. Ava recently cleared the air about her credit card on her social media platform, reported Sanook.

“Thanks for the cute clip from the Lan Na Indy page. After reading several comments, I feel so encouraged. Thank you for your love and care. It means a lot to me. What I want to clarify is that this credit card is an add-on from my brother’s, it does not have 150 million (laughing). And the limit is not even 100,000 baht.

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday unveiled plans to form a joint task force with Cambodia to combat transboundary haze pollution. The decision was made ahead of a scheduled meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet set to take place in Thailand on February 7.

The leaders will undertake a joint study tour to Sa Kaeo province, an area severely impacted by PM2.5 transboundary pollution. The pollution in Thailand’s border provinces, typically caused by wildfires, necessitates coordination with neighbouring countries for effective management, Thavisin explained.

Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) will provide satellite images to aid the task force’s response planning for hotspots created by wildfires. The continuous exchange of information between Thailand and Cambodia via the future joint task force will be a critical factor in the countries’ collective efforts to combat transboundary haze pollution.

PM Srettha emphasised the government’s focus on the right to clean air, alongside tourism-based economic stimulation. In line with this commitment, the Clean Air Bill has been introduced to Parliament.

maybe those 'dispensaries' in SoiCowboy opened up to cater the Thai market! many workers use it! as long as there is demand there will be supply!

NOBODY CAN VISIT the “sickly” de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict at large Thaksin Shinawatra at Police Hospital if he refuses to be visited, according to Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsuthin.

Somsak said today (Dec.22) the patient is “legally privileged” to maintain ultimate privacy and decide for himself whether he may disagree to having anyone other than family members and medical personnel visit him in a tight-security ward at Police Hospital where he has been staying beyond a 120-day period earlier provided by law.

Somsak was responding to news reports that members of the House Committee on Police Affairs are scheduled to visit the de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict at large at the hospital on Jan.12 with apparent intent to find out the truth about his secrecy-shrouded “illnesses” which have been obviously keeping him from being literally put behind bars at Bangkok Remand Prison since the last four months.

House committee chair Chaichana Dejdecho has earlier said hospital doctors and prison officials who had testified before his panel had largely failed to shed light upon the deposed prime minister’s current health condition and correctional procedures for the handling of convicts outside of a prison.
