  1. Oh how I long for the sound of church bells on a Sunday morning drifting across the fields calling us to church, then a pint or two in the local after our righteousness. What do we get? A racket that sounds like a troop of baboons trying to strangle each other and a bottle of fizzy lager. Folk back home don't realise what we sacrifice to be here!

  2. Hmmmm TQ's: I also used to go there a lot as it is a good place to get a drink during the day if you don't fancy the beer bars.

I stopped going when I noticed both staff and some of the patrons refusing potential customers that were not WASP's.

I don't think I'll go back until it adopts a more enlightened door policy.

    Simon

What's a WASP in this sense? Washed And Showered Properly?

  3. I am sure you will all be delighted to know that the 'OP's' water supply came back on last night. One does wonder why more and more condo blocks and houses are being built when the infastructure can't cope with what we already have when the town is full.

  4. Thye OP needs to grow up, deliveries have come through today, not too much problems, if your water/electric is off then that is a local/moo baan problem, dont try to pin all your own shortcommings on other people!

Firstly, what is an OP? Old age Pensioner?

Thanks, I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with modern slang.

Firstly, what is an OP? Old age Pensioner? How much older do I have to be to satisfy you? Secondly there now seems to be a problem with the water supply further than my estate. Just got home after a few beers in Soi 5. No mains water, Jomtien Thani Hotel had three water tankers delivering in the space of an hour. All straight out of the local ponds.

  6. Mains water now off in my village in Jomtien. You couldn't make it up! How long will the electicity supply last with the extra demand from all our 'invaders'?

  7. "Two days after , the prime minister summoned me and asked me to be spokesman as she believes I will be able to explain the information according to the public's needs and make them understand the situation more easily,"

When we had a coffee, she's asking me for a date. When I denied she said that I'll have to be the head of FROC, or better said their spokesman.

All I need to say is what people want to hear. And her older brother will join me soon..jap.gif

    The new spokesman, Comical Ali.

  8. Sounds like you are in for an interesting experience. I've had Thais staying with me a few times. They will stand on the toilet seats and break them, move all the furniture so they can eat on the floor, breaking ornaments as they do it, empty your fridge throwing away what they don't like, cigarette burns on tables and beds, drink your best whisky and piss in the garden. And they won't want to leave. I got around this by finding them jobs to around the house and garden. This soon got them to pack up and go back to Essarn!

  9. With the possibility of hundreds of thousands of displaced, penniless and potentially hungry Thais arriving in Pattaya from Bangkok over the coming days and weeks, foreigners are well advised not to underestimate the pent up contempt and dislike of many of them for "farang" and their propensity to extreme violence.

    Be careful out there.

Thanks Sgt Esterhouse, I feel you may be right. They always have to find someone to blame as they of course, can't ever be wrong, that would lose face. I haven't noticed any of the 'Dunkirk Spirit' in them, but I suppose that is long gone in England too.

  10. Back in 1960's UK I loved Wimpy burgers. A Wimpy was beef, Delta was pork and a Bender was some sort of sausage. Don't think Wimpy Bars exist anymore, thanks I suppose, to the McDonalds invasion which started in Woolwich mid 70's.

  11. I think it would be hard to find drains in this town which are not blocked! In Soi 5 Jomtien they tried to clean out the drains about six years ago, gave up outside Simple Simons as there were cars parked over the access covers. To my knowledge that has been the only time in ten years, and I assume this laziness or incompetence is commonplace throughout Pattaya.

  12. Parts of Bangkok are flooded the rest of Bangkok is standing by to be flooded, people have been coming down here for a week or more and there will be a lot more to come. Get ready for massive traffic jams.

For the last week or maybe longer, hords of people have been coming down from Bangkok to stock up on water, food etc., which is unavailable there. I was told yesterday that many are also leaving their cars here to be safe from flooding and taking the bus back.

  13. All the mains tap water downtown is drinkable, supposedly, if you draw it directly from the main supply. Most of the problems here arise from the use of tanks in many residences and other buildings, especially above the ground floor. Anyone who drinks water that has been in a tank here is out of his mind.

I go for the machines because they are always connected directly to the main water supply with no intervening tanks, so I dont have to think about what happens in between. 1B/litre is not excessive for filter/UV treatment and I dont mind paying it.

Tap water is not safe to drink. It may be when it leaves the processing plant but they use a low pressure system in Thailand as it's cheaper. Problem is that when water mains fracture dirt and bacteria contaminate the water. In more advanced countries a high pressure system is used so that the force of the water gushing out from a broken pipe prevents crap going in. Hence you see water gushing feet in the air from a broken mains at home.

During water shortages hotels and condo blocks buy their water from private water trucks who pump it out of the nearest pond.

  14. There's a school on Pattaya Klang near Big C (old Carreffour) on the right handside on the way from the beach to the Suk Rd.

My missus said that they told her she was one of the best students that they'd had.

All I can say is that I'd hate to see the worst.

It's still a good idea though. Get the lessons & then experience on the road is the real true teacher. Keep her off the Suk though or at least no uturns for a while at least

Mine used same place, think it was about two weeks of lessons. I wouldn't allow her to pay the 500baht bribe so she failed test first time. As I had seen the simple tasks required to pass, I taught her them over the weekend and she passed 2nd attempt without paying a bribe. It took another couple of months to teach her safe enough driving for me to be happy for her to drive alone.

  15. I can confirm that the boat service no longer exists. Why not drive yourself, I do it regularly on the bike, as long as you have the book in your name the border formalities are no problem and with the new road you can make Sihanoukville easily in 3 to 4 hours from Koh Kong. I'm planning on going again as soon as the weather improves. Has anyone here been on the new road recently? Just wondering if the heavy rains and flooding have damaged it at all.

  16. Sounds good. I'm not too familiar with Jomtien - can this area be reached at the top to the Soi that sites the Immigration office ?

I love Indonesian food - how about a restaurant review from someone who has tried it ?

Indonesian food in Indonesia is great, particularly Nasi Padang places. However the flavours and range of dishes tend to get toned-down when marketed in other countries. I have had some fairly bland dishes in restaurants in London, Singapore and Holland. If they have Indonesian staff in the kitchen then it should be fine.

    Simon

I tried it last week. Although not an expert on Indonesian food, only having had it in Amsterdam a few times many years ago, I really enjoyed it. The Dutch owner introduced himself and descibed the dishes on the menu for us. Food was very good, service also. I will definately go back.

  17. Try the Curry Hut in the beer plaza Jomtien...fantastic, really is the only curry I have found in Thailand that tastes like a traditional English madras/masala....cheap also, curries are 130-180-...nam bread 30 and pilau rice 60......dont bother with the popadoms as the pickle tray is crap...need to ask for punjabi style curry

Phom I don't know Jomtien that well, can you let me know where the Beer Plaza is, basically I know the statue, immigration and beach road.

    Thanks in advance

    RabC

past statue on new rd ie jontiem second rd turn into bar complex on left and then immediately right past front of aussie bar then left ie follow round to left see curry hut on right----------not as hard as sounds. the chicken biriani at 100b take away is dam_n good ---------if you kept on new rd and didnt turn into bar complex see small italian on right short distance away ---------very good too.

I agree about the 'Curry Hut', very acceptable and about half the price of Ali Baba. Just around the corner from there is a new Indonesian restaurant, 'Bali Breeze' which I tried last night. Truely excellent. Food, service and value.
