  1. The reverse V the insulting one was originated in teh middle ages the English archers would flick the V to show they still had their bow fingers ( the ones you draw back teh bow with ) as if the French captured them, they would cut them off.

The Chrurchill variation, the reverse of the insult, was to indicate V for Victory on the completion of beating Germany, and the decleration of Victory Day.

The one in Asia is just cute pose originating in Japan

I believe the above to be historically correct, but add that I seem to remember in Europe during the 70s it was an insult to do it in a photo over and behind someone else's head. It simbolised the ears of a rabbit and therefore that person had a similar intellect.

  2. As I understand it, in 2015 the Asean trade treaty comes into effect. This, supposedly based on the European Common Market, would allow free movement of goods and labour between the member states. Anyone know or have thoughts about this? I haven't found a single Thai who is aware of it although it will mean significant changes to this country. No more import duties, Cambodian labourers being here legally so can't be robbed of their wages and deported at the month's end, Philppinos with their English skills taking all the jobs in restaurants and entertainment venues, Singaporean and Malaysian civil engineers in charge of road building etc. What have the Thais to offer?

  3. The road has collapsed just before the Hanuman roundabout.

Indeed. It's a good 3 feet across and nearly as much deep. And it looks like underneath the asphalt there is just sand rather than hardcore.

Nice big swamp directly in front of Immigration on Soi 5 also (where the water from the market drains down to, if you can call that draining).

They fixed that overnight but down by the moobahn they still have the sandbags blocking off one side of the dual carriageway from Soi Wat Boon on.

Only about half. Two nights ago a very drunk Thai racing down the road hit them wrecking his pick-up truck!

  4. I assume this is all going to be called off now? Still bucketing down and the driving range will be flooded, plus could be tricky to even get there?

Unfortunately you are probably right. I've been to everyone since it started and they were always lucky with the weather, but I guess their luck has run out this year.

It's a real shame or the kids who would have been looking forward toit so much.

Not just the kids, a lot of people have put a lot of work into the preparations.

  5. I am guessing it is very bad indeed, my pond has burst its banks and the dirt road outside my gate is now a raging river.

Anyone got any pics or links to pictures of the flooding in town?

My pond is also overflowing, in twelve years here I don't remember it raining this hard for so long. Just amazed that the power is still on!

  7. Can someone explain what uniform she is wearing, is she now in the army or the police? What about the medals? What wars or campaigns has she fought in?

"Like her male predecessors, Yingluck will wear a white uniform and prostrate before the portrait of His Majesty the King in a ceremony to accept the royal command."

I believe it is the decoration of the office; much like any government administrative position (school teachers are not special forces units, ok?). Nothing to do with wars or combat action. That's a strange comment.

Thanks, I've never understood the Thai's fascination with uniforms and medals, something they appear to have in common with North Korea.

  8. For those that believe Pattaya is moving upscale, have you ever been to an upscale resort town? In all my travels to resorts around the world I have never seen a more downmarket, grubby dump. The amount of time, energy and money that would need to be spent to make this happen means Pattaya's future will always be at the bottom of the pile.

What exactly is Pattaya's draw, once you remove the bar scene, which most definitely IS dying? The filthy eroded beach, the dismal shopping, the miserable and tacky theme parks?

I agree. :clap2: But you can get cheap implants!

  9. Whether tits or teeth, one would be foolish to go for the cheapest.

As in all things in life, you get what you pay for.

Bangkok Pattaya hospital does implants around 45,000 Baht depending on cup size. A full sex change is around 120,000, so I'm told.

  10. :clap2:

Give me a Russian over a tattoed UK chav any day.

As for bars closing down, that is just plain BS.

You are :sleepy: and a :jerk:. Why don't you just stay in your house and off the internet and people don't have to listen to your boring rants. Do you even know what a chav is?

  11. This problem and most others are caused by the fact that no one cares about Pattaya because they don't come from here. Politicians, policemen, prostitutes all flock down here from Esarn to make as much money as possible and take it home. Probably the only residents who care about and try to take pride in this town are us foreigners who have chosen to try to live here.
