  1. "Perhaps in a move to assuage market fears, Governor Prasarn [Trairatvorakul] came out a day after the MPC meeting [on Wednesday] and indicated that the central bank was ready to hold a special meeting and deliver monetary stimulus, if it appeared necessary. This, in our opinion, indicates that the BOT has no intention of changing its current policy course of rate normalisation but would be responsive to events."

Well if they couldn't see a wall of water 2 months out, do we really think they can time economic stimulus?

  2. yes, blame the food ! ,

Finally there is a Thai public official talking sense and you have to "nail him". I guess getting to take the first shot is more important than taking a close look at what he is saying. Google Iodine Deficiency Disorder and look at the Wikipedia article. You will find the following:

"According to WHO, in 2007, nearly 2 billion individuals had insufficient iodine intake, a third being of school age. ... Thus iodine deficiency, as the single greatest preventable cause of mental retardation, is an important public-health problem."[1]

Interestingly enough, Iodine deficiency is more prevalent in remote areas, away from places that get seafood in their diet. So if Phuket children have a higher IQ than most of the rest of the country their natural diet may have more to do with this than any organized efforts. In other words the luck of the draw.

We are what what we eat becomes.

  3. "A contingency plan has been prepared but we cannot disclose the details yet because it could create chaos. We'll have to wait for the proper time," Pol Gen Pracha said.

When will they stop treating the population like children and start telling the truth?

And right after the details are released does Yingluck get up and say "Okay you can panic now"?

  4. Do any of you really expect anything else? Why the shock horror at a bit of nepotism. Like so many foreigners you all seem to think anything not done the same way as back home is to be criticized. Wake up TIT!

Western countries are no better. prime ministers, presidents, chancellors etc all get to appoint supporters in many powerful positions and of course they do so. It's politics!

You mean like "Heck of a job" Brownie?

    bush_brown_medal.gif

Michael Brown with a resume more padded than a Thai bra, was exposed by a natural storm--Hurricane Katrina.

Perhaps history does have a way of repeating itself. Padded resume story. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1103003,00.html

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday urged all parties to unite to fight flood crisis and pledged to improve flood warnings and information from the government's Flood Relief Operations Centre to prevent confusion among members of the public.

It would seem she's got a lot of ground to make up specifically in those regards...

79 per cent said the government's support was insufficient and not distributed efficiently; and 68.6 per cent said the flood relief supplies themselves did not sufficiently meet victims' needs.

    http://www.thaivisa....ost__p__4754920

    AND

As much as 86.2 percent of the respondents still have no clear understanding as to whether their areas are flood-prone even after the updates, while 89.2 percent find the updates confusing. About 87 percent don't trust the information from the FROC.

    http://www.thaivisa....ost__p__4774109

I'm guessing at least 90% of those people couldn't find Bangkok on a map, let alone read the map and see where the flooding is likely to be.

  6. In such case & it is your last day on visa , and departed stamped ......witch is the visa status because of return & failure to depart complete..??:o

How would they know? Oz doesn't stamp passports of their citizens. Could only see a problem if from a country not eligible for visa on arrival, and I'm sure they would have a special case procedure if required.

500 baht fine or buy a new visa on landing :D

So that's where all the "arrivals" the TAT is touting are coming from.

  7. WarpSpeed has made some good points. Not often we see clear thinking on this forum. I would add, there is no need to defend the current government, due to its short time in office. This lack of planning has been going on for decades.

Some areas of the globe can expect a 100 year flood every few years from now on. Perhaps this area is one of them. If you want to live near the ocean, at or below sea level, especially near the equator, expect more of this. The long term plan should be to migrate BKK to higher ground. Can you say Atlantis?

  8. Your headline is rather generic, it lead me to believe you had evidence of many westerners being victims of aggressive behavior. What was there was one very specific and dangerous instance toward you, and a lot of general arm waving and hollering directed at you. Eventually a second specific and dangerous instance toward you. Both of these would scare the crap out of me if they were directed at me. I would not take either lightly. If I knew I had done nothing wrong, I would get to the bottom of this right away and get it resolved before it escalates any further. I have not noticed any arm waving and shouting at me or anyone else.

  9. United and Continental now allow only one checked bag at 50lbs.

And I wonder how much of the hold is taken up by air freight that also pays for using the plane? I pay 1500 US dollars for a ticket. You think that maybe thats not enough and I should pay more or that after forking out $1500 I should fork out a bit more so that they can make room for my luggage and not air freight?

If you think they are making money hand over fist you can always buy stock.

  10. I, too, buy the same brands of cow's milk other posters have said they buy that are free of any sugar added. It is only the soy milk that I have found with sugar (well, other than sweetened condensed canned milk).

"The average freezing point of cow milk is -0.547C"

I have a fridge that I keep cold but nowhere near that cold and all the brands freeze apart from Meiji. Seems to suggest some dilution going on.

Where does this happen in the refrigerator? Only one shelf, e.g., top shelf only, or anywhere?

I had a similar problem that I really only notice with some liquids that I very cleverly diagnosed (after a couple of years) as happening to the items that I set next to the vent from the freezer into the refrigerator (a side by side one) on the top shelf. So there I was, getting freezer temp air (or close to it?) blowing on the foods. They did not actually freeze, but were close to freezing.

Never happened on the next shelf down or lower.

I have not looked up the freezing point of milk, but if the average is indeed only a little over .5C less than water, it would not be possible under these unscientific conditions to draw any conclusions from this evidence. You may be correct, but even a 10% dilution might not make enough difference to be measurable other than in a lab. Best to give them the benefit of the doubt.

  11. the world "international" is used cheaply in Thailand, along with others like luxury, fast, exclusive ......

You can add "smart" to that list. The other day I saw a sign that read "smart wood". Smart tv, smart houses, smart this, smart that, smart cab on pick up trucks. If everything in the country is so da_n smart, how come there are so many dumb-asses? Especially driving around in those smart cabs. I guess the cabs are smart compared to many of the drivers in them.

Thailand is the hub of nonsense.

However, wouldn't the joke be on us if they only release these hub stories to ThaiVisa and wait for all the criticism and jokes? The HUB of WIND-UPS. LOL, just a thought.

  12. It's plain and simple. Passengers and their luggage as relate to the cost of flying are nothing but cargo.

Take the guesswork out of it, (and the accompanying loopholes to whine).

You with all your baggage will be weighed at check-in and charged accordingly. Otherwise it is a classic case of "Those that pay, pay for those that don't pay". Just because you got away with it for years, does not make it fair or just.

  13. The man in the street is not completely innocent here. He was dumb enough to buy into the notion that housing prices were going to go up at 20-30% per year forever. Then he was prepared to lie on his credit app to justify a loan/house that he could not afford. Yes wall street is full of greedy people, no argument, but there are also has a lot of good honest people involved in the financial industry, and they do serve a purpose.

As for someone else's comment on short sellers, bankers etc., being scum, what do you propose? Outlaw short selling? Let asset prices sky rocket out of control because those that recognize a bubble can't take a position that profits when reality returns? Hardly a good solution. Re-instate the uptick rule? Possibly, but then, why not a down-tick rule for rampant buying? It's difficult to envision a good solution. All this financial globalization has developed way to quickly for the regulators to keep pace.

  14. That is cheap compared to what Gold Canyon wants for them. A sleeve of 3 is almost 900baht. I asked why so expensive, he said same same everywhere. I said NO!

That is almost 10.00 a ball, well over double the US price. If you want to just try them, go to a golf course and buy some used ones. Not perfect but good enough to try. Usually can be had for 25-50 baht depending on condition. Also if you have a regular caddy, she will probably be able to get some if you ask her for around 20 baht. (Mixed quality.)

  15. Excuse me for my ignorance but you have a 25 hour process to save about 125 Baht, 1/2 gallon of Yolida yogurt costs about 200 Baht and is exellent of taste and sugar free, and that is if nothing goes wrong and you eat it all before expiry date.

I guess i just go to any supermarket and buy Yolida whenever I want to eat yogurt.

You are right, I am not doing this to save money. With store bought sugar free is only part of the story. Aspertame or some other artificial sweetener is probably in most sugar free products that taste too good to be true. I know many consider aspertame to be safe, but many don't and my unscientific guess is most food and drug controversies ultimately resolve to the negative side. For my money the fewer man made chemicals you ingest, the better off you will be. Just one of the many reasons I also cook most of my own food. I know there is no MSG in it and I can control how much sugar is used. Obviously I am not doing that to save money either.

  16. I would like to thank Theseahorse for his valuable input on this thread,

Also would like to wish Kennnalder & Paulchangmai success in their yogurt making!

    Good luck and Thank you.

    Cheers::)

First batch was a hit. Hard to screw it up even though I tried. I didn't realize milk boiled so quickly. I walked out of the kitchen for 4-5 minutes and came back to an overflowing pot. I went ahead anyway using Bio and next morning it was ready. Great on mueslis with bananas. Thanks for getting it started kikoman.

  17. Yes, thanks for the idea. I have been wanting to get some yogurt without the artificial sweeteners. This looks like a great way to do it. Since I can't read Thai, how do you know if you are buying yogurt with live cultures? Just any old plain yogurt?

I had that problem also, as all the writing was in Thai, I just purchased the only plain yogurt that was at Macro the day I went. It has a three letter Thai name and is in a light & dark blue, and white container. On the lower front side, it has a long Thai word and under that is printed (Dutchie*original yoghurt) and it worked for me.

    Hope that was helpful.

Good luck in making your yogurt.

    Cheers::)

Thank you, I plan to start the first batch today. Just another couple of questions. First, since the milk has been pasteurized already, is it necessary to "scald" it again? Second, does it matter what kind of container is used while the culture works? Is a metal saucepan okay?

    Thanks

It's not essential to heat the milk, but you'll get a thicker yogurt if you do and if you plan to strain it you'll end up with more. When heating the milk you're not re-pasteurizing it, your just getting the proteins and bacteria in the milk working again, in cheese production it's called ripening (but it would contain a special starter culture too), it's not essential but I'd highly recommend it.

Any pan is fine apart from a cheap aluminium pot as it may react with the culture. I always use a thick based stainless steel pan and then transfer into small (500ml) plastic containers the next day once set and chilled.

    Thank you.

  19. Sure, I can meet you at the corner which is 38% retracement from the 4th stoplight which satisfied the upside projection from the 2nd zebra crossing. If that level fails then I can meet at 4.3276543km from 8th stoplight, but don't ask me for a time frame. <div>Pretty much sums it up, technical analysts aren't much different from fundamental analysts. </div><div><br></div><div>Mostly wrong but never in doubt.</div>
