  1. Today we visited 2 shops, neither had expanded clay blocks. They have concrete blocks, thats it. Another local shop has clay bricks, but only small and not expanded clay. If someone know a store with expanded clay blocks in central thailand, I would be very grateful. Its just not true that they are everywhere. I had a thai with me that explained what we were looking for.

  2. BTW, the term "IT block" is used by thais to describe any kind of block used for buildning, so this term is not really helpful in this context. At least this is my understanding as of now.

Small bricks require much more work, so I doubt they are useful/cost-efficient.

  3. I am building a pool soon. I had an offer from this company:

    SWIMMING POOL CENTER LTD.,PART.

68/824 Moo 8 Rattantibet Road Banggasoa Muang Nonthaburi 11000

Does anyone have experience with them?

what in their suggested plan can i look for to know its a decent pool?

    best regards, christian

  4. thanks guys!

the blocks i have seen so far is not based on expaned clay, but smaller blocks that i cant use because of high cost. One estimation for our wall was 300k baht, just for materials. But i will definately try to talk and describe more to the shops and people. I am not building this myself, but it seems i must research and buy materials, as the workers i have talked with so far only provide work. If anyone know good wall builders in Petchabun, I am grateful for some tips here.

  5. certainly an interesting thread. We have a pond close to our home in central thailand. locals swim there a lot every day. my wife is a nurse and has not heard of serious disease from swimmers here. I have been in this pond for 1h about once a week. Once i got a rasch, it disappeared within 5 days. This happened after one day when i walked in the water a lot (the rasch was only around the feet).

as of now, i am not certain its safe. but i do swim there, because i need the activity.

I am not sure if data from other parts of asia is or is not valid here. If someone as data on thailand ponds i would be grateful.

There's a couple of things I'd think about. One is a snail parasite that causes skin irritation and rash. Hoi Con aka Swimmers Itch see http://dermnetnz.org/arthropods/swimmers-itch.html

plus the possible runoff of farm chemicals into the pond.

Farm chemicals you can control, what worry me most is local parasite. If someone has more information, I would be very much interested to know more ...

Check with the Center For Disease Control (CDC) in the USA is usually good for reliable up to date for up to date info. You can reach them at www.cdc.gov/travel. I took a quick look just now and got this:

"Do not swim in fresh water (except in well-chlorinated swimming pools) to avoid infection with schistosomiasis. Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection often contracted through recreational water activities in contaminated water, such as kayaking, is common in tropical areas of Southeast Asia. (For more information, please see Swimming and Recreational Water Safety.) An outbreak was reported in Borneo among expedition travelers in 2000."

    Good luck.

  6. Hi all,

We own a house in petchabun, with a large property around it. We want to build a wall around the property, 232 meters to be exact. I have been advised that the best material is leca blocks, but i cant find a place to buy them.

    advice greatly appreciated!

  7. yes, i our wedding is "small". we have it in our home, so this gives it natural contraints. very lucky about that, hehe. yes, we sometimes go to the market in petchabun and chondaen. look for a white guy with a doberman and a tall thai lady!

    all the best,

    wan and christian
