'sparing lawbreakers was beyond its power' 555
sparing lawbreakers IS its power!
At least Andy Hall has had a good day. Not enough Thai heroes.
Easy for us to say, maybe.

Does this mean they can supply and operate the long promised lifts for disabled passengers? Without asking for handouts?
Of course it does. This surge in profits seems excessive. The money is here to supply extra carriages too. And run more trains. The service is just not comfortable too often. Yes they must make money, but is there no point at which the customer matters?
Sometimes they publicize bringing your bicycle with you 555. Sometimes it is difficult to bring a bag with you.

Cops Want Pro-Election Activists Jailed
I agree entirely. Prayuth and his cronies led a coup calling for elections 4 years ago.
Lock 'em up!

Easy to agree, but it means all the good things are reserved for people with money and the poor are left out, even if they are more interested and keen to improve life on earth with their talent and motivation.

Yes I suspect you are correct.
Of course we do not discuss or mention the sad event- but is likely to happen soon. Then as you say- delay for another year.
Prem or another one? Got a Coronation to sort out too. Examples of unrest will be further excuses. And not yet finished Parliament building. And waiting for 'lucky' day confirmation from the temple.

My gf or the hotel staff speak thai, and we stil get refused to have a ride. So my experinece is bkk taxi sucks big time.
Download the Grab app and enjoy their service.
My lady is Thai and is very polite but last month we experienced 12 taxis refusing to take us where we wanted to go with the meter before I gave in because I wanted to do more with my life than hold out any longer. About 30 minutes at that point.
Interestingly a number of taxis drove past empty, but not looking for pickups - presumably on their way to do a Grab taxi pickup?

So when does the educated engineers at the dams let some water out? When the dam is at
110 percent or 120 percent full, or do they wait for the breach then just repair the huge
hole? Just curious of how they learned from their past mistakes?
Geezer
Unfortunately there is a good chance the educated engineers will have to wait on the decision of a 'superior' who will be told what is wanted by the people who put them into that position.

This is the first time I have heard a Thai politician stand up and say that the coup makers should be prosecuted - for high treason, in my opinion, as the coupsters committed the ultimate crime - the thieving of a whole nation's sovereignty and the smashing of ALL the people's fundamental civil and human rights.
Let's hear more such fighting, courageous talk, from major Thai figures up and down the land - backed up by the bulk of the Thai populace.
If enough people turn on this filthy, rotten junta - it will collapse in upon itself. Even a junta cannot withstand the wrath of an entire nation.
Thais - where are you?? WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON??
Suggest Thais might choose to fly the Malay flag. If it was read as a statement about anti-corruption and a populations refusal to vote the way they were supposed to....so much the better.

The case is in connection with the Ua Athon housing project for low-income earners, which was started in 2005 by the National Housing Authority"
So they're trying to get rid of him as well then
The way things are here the accusation may be correct, but the man himself apologetic for having to work within a rotten system.
So let him describe what he did and start to pull the system down. Some kind of Truth and Reconciliation Court will surely have to be set up to put Thailand on the right tracks again. Punish the truly guilty, take back their gains for the sake of the people and free the many who felt they had no choice but to do wrong because they were swallowed up by a system they were powerless to change and could not see ending.

A simple travel insurance policy would almost certainly exclude a tourist from elephant riding, river rafting, rock climbing, zip wires, bungee jumping or trekking when the paths are wet. With unsuitable footwear, with unqualified guide etc etc.
Hiring a motorbike, especially when the rider is inexperienced and extra especially if they do not wear a helmet. Possibly even if they use a motorbike taxi if they have not checked the license and insurance of the driver. Ditto tuk tuks or even taxis? Paranoid? Insurance companies looking for excuses not to pay out can go much further than these examples if they want.
The policies that may be offered by Thai authorities will be for what?

I am convinced the economy is not doing well and businesses and the population are having a tough time.
Right up until I see the latest government figures and I know I am wrong again. Ha ha ha.
It would be enough to turn me to drink if it did not cost nearly twice as much as 10 years ago and the pound wasn't down so much.

30,000......wonder what drew them out?
I would like to really know, though speculating is also fun. Is there anyone on here from Buriram?
Do many of the crowd work for local and other government offices, were given the day off and instructions where to go? Were surrounding villages offered a fun day out with football and free food? How many really lost a days wages to show true support for something they believe in?
Khao Sod has 'There, 30,000 people were assembled – by Newin’s order, according to some reports – and practiced chanting Prayuth’s name to the sound of drums prior to the junta boss taking the field.'
“We must get at least 10 billion baht!” Newin thundered to the crowd. “I’m asking you to endure the sun and the heat for this moment.”

Yes, Kaorop, the junta are as intelligence-insulting as you suggest.
Literally ANY excuse will be used by the junta to delay the 'election' - for example:
there is not yet complete peace and harmony in the land;
people will be 'confused' if they are allowed to talk about an election and politics;
terrorists are threatening Thailand - now is not the time for an election;
a cache of weapons has been found - national security prevents any election for the time being;
a certain person has passed away, so elections would be inappropriate for at least 6 months;
people up and down Thailand have told Prayut repeatedly (he says) that they are happy with him, want him to stay on, and don't need an election ...
and on and on the excuses will go. They are legion.
I just hope that EVENTUALLY the Thais will have had enough of it all and will re-discover their long-suppressed dignity and rights again. But that means - to FIGHT for them!
the Queen is elderly and unwell
good wishes to Thailand from Germany may not suffice too long
Prem is very very old and the new figures in the army may not all believe the same things as were OK in the past.
Also very old is the main man of Thailand's biggest company - how will things fall into place when he reaches his rewards in heaven?
these are all important factors that fossilize Thailand at the moment but will end, I hope.
TV today showed a lot of content about protests I thought would not have been allowed. Salutes to the brave.

I am going to have a bit of a 'go' at you, but please note it isn't personal; you have expressed a view that many people share and... well... you're here (sorry).
I take issue with the idea that Thai people are "indifferent" to their political situation.
How many Thai people have died since 1973 (I use 1973 as generally the starting point for the current political battles) fighting for their rights? Determining a hard, certain number is a tricky proposition, but I think to say several thousand is fair. 1973. 1976. 1992. 2005-2006. 2009-2010. 2014. Those are the larger demos off the top of my head, but there have been lots and lots of smaller, less publicized battles as well. Further, how many incidents of political activism and/or political repression have occurred outside of Bangkok and outside of the glare of the media? How many incidents have occurred quietly without being mentioned in the newspaper? Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots.
Respectfully, how many Thai people need to either be killed or injured until you (and others) think they are fighting for their rights? Another few thousand? Some ten thousands? A hundred thousand?
What is the <deleted> number?????????
I am a wee bit sympathetic to your views; I also watch the news and wish that Thai people were out in the streets by the hundreds of thousands fighting for their rights, but that is easy to say/think while I sit in my nice, safe little house. In this current situation, would you be willing to risk a jail term of 5 years? 10 years? Would you be willing to risk the potential of getting shot? Would you be willing to risk reprisals to your family? Got a brother or sister trying to get into university? How would you feel if they were refused a place because of you?
This is a terrible fight that the Thais are facing. Their opponents, the military or at least parts of it, are extremely well-funded, have had huge amounts of training and experience, material support and (although I hate to admit it) a certain amount of support throughout the country including from some of the wealthy, the institutional leaders, etc. etc. etc.
This is not an easy or simple battle.
This is one that will persist for many, many, many years.
And perhaps we outsiders (who sit and watch events) ought to have a bit more sympathy for those who are fighting, in whatever way they choose.
Again, sorry AntDee. It ain't aimed at you...
I hoped the article would be more on the lines of this: South Korean President found guilty for abuse of power, bribery and interfering in government business and sentenced to 20 years in prison. This followed 1 million citizens participating in the national protests against corruption and crony capitalism.

I'm just wondering why the government has to provide housing for court officials. Is the pay so low that they cannot find their own housing or is it contractual? This isn't meant as a sarcastic comment either. Really wonder why.
Agreed. In more developed countries it is understood the legislature and the judiciary should be separate.
Otherwise there will be suspicions that verdicts might not be unbiased.
Like here.

If it all goes horribly wrong for the country there will be no shortage of reasons that can be pointed to. How high does something have to stink before people come out and refuse to go along with it?
Not long now till Prem comes out with his yearly call to people to end corruption - where are the people like him (I know he is not untainted) who can shout out loud with little fear of reprisal.

They should know these words very well even if other subjects are weak.
Is The National Anthem still twice a day? (translation from Wikipedia)
'Thailand embraces in its bosom all people of Thai blood.
Every inch of Thailand belongs to the Thais
long maintained its sovereignty,
Because the Thais have always been united.
The Thai people are peace-loving,
But they are no cowards at war.
They will allow no-one to rob them of their independence,
Nor shall they suffer.
All Thais are ready to give up every drop of blood
For the nation's safety, freedom and progress. Chai Yo! (Hurrah)'

I have a dream where a young, forward thinking party overwhelms the efforts to keep the dinosaurs in power. It cancels the dishonest constitution and makes forensic accounting a priority. Preferably from outside agencies. Part of a recognition Thailand can learn a great deal from abroad.
Confiscation of suspicious assets will take place pending investigations.
I know..............
