  1. In a way it would be good to see it happen - only so that fools were forced to face the consequences of being fools, would lose face, credibility and would learn to shut up until they had thought a bit first.

Could start by bringing the Khao San Road tourism hub to an end.

    Pimarnwit School

    Satriwithaya School

    Wat Sangvej School

    Bowon Niwet

    Wat Mai Amatarot School

    Wat Ratchanatda School

    Thammasat University......

How long before they start to explain further, seek to clarify, offer more chance for understanding etc.

  2. How much more duplication is needed?  Already many existing bodies to deal with corruption.  Get on with it.
    National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC)
    Election Commission
Office of the Auditor-General of Thailand
    Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission
    Department of Special Investigation
    Royal Thai Police (RTP)......I know!

and now Anti Corruption centres to report to the PM’s Office.......

Long term failure to do anything much means this country even has a "Museum of Thai Corruption" in Bangkok.

  3. Every time I hear of police being sent to inactive posts I think of the important jobs they could do instead such as

    1) spending their shift crossing pedestrian crossings and giving honest fines for any unsafe driving they witness

    2) spending their shift in popular pick up areas trying to get a taxi in areas such as MBK, Sukhumvit, bus stations etc and fining the taxis with 'non functioning' meters

  4. Just suppose a policy was taken by an average visitor.  Would it cover for renting a motorbike?  For a rider with no license as is usual?

It might not even cover riding in a tuk tuk.

What about elephant riding, cuddling tigers, trekking, rock climbing, ziplines and bunjy jumping, white water rafting, jet skis and scuba diving?

At the airport point of issue should the tourist be informed they should not do any of these?

Probably it would cover for the most dangerous of them all - crossing the road!

  5. If only there was an elderly statesman who was approaching the end of his life.  If only he was so revered and untouchable he need not fear saying what he knows; at the centre of things for so long he would know where the corruption happens and who it benefits.  If such a person could start the ball rolling with a few names instead of yearly calls for others to work to end corruption he could leave his beloved Thailand a better place.

    If only...

  6. Keith was not a party animal, he was more like a metronome, and whatever he was he deserves the respect of being remembered truthfully. Any future posters please don't make pointless guesses and give fatuous congratulations to someone you never knew.
If you saw him arrive at the Jolly Frog at 11.55 am or 12.05 pm it meant your watch was wrong. He arrived at 12.00 pm and would stay 20 or 50 minutes depending on how many 'friends' were there to talk with. You would remember him easily. He wore a white T-shirt and pale blue jeans. Every time.
His main interest was avoiding spending money. He was very good at it.
He would come back to the Jolly Frog at 6.50 pm in time to get his table and watch the films with his small bottle of Sangsom. One of his favourite topics to talk about with his 'friends' would be how bad the Jolly Frog was. He should have known - he had done this every day for years! Except when he had to do a visa run. Or the times he came back at 3.00 pm as well to see if anyone was about he could spend some more time with.
So what a shame no-one noticed when he had not come one lunchtime, one evening...or the next day...or the next day...or the next. The management, the staff and many regular customers should have noticed this was very unusual.
How many days before his 'friends' stopped asking where he was because they had already talked about that yesterday? Boring! So many of the worlds problems to discuss when you have nothing to do all day, again.
It would be nice to think Keith died happy. His neighbour thought he was a party animal, but it is very hard to see why.

    Sorry Keith.

    RIP

  7. Agreed interesting. Seems like some places are starting to make a bit more of an effort in this town.

Used to be when we thought of going out for a bite to eat we'd think of all the places we could go and end up staying in!

Kan is getting more and more interesting. Makro opening soon as well.

And the new resort next to Duenshine. 4,800 baht a night anyone?

  8. Hi James

If you're ever in Kanchanaburi there's a new place called Mangosteen Cafe and Books which could be interested. If they are as good as you say then should pay for your transport and a couple of nights break in this lovely part of Thailand. The bookshop here used to be in Jolly Frog where it got a very good reputation and is now just outside the same soi.
