  1. I am sure, that this case is not a unique one....

A Thailady asked me for help, she has a 8 Months old Baby with an US Citizen,

    but he denies the Paternity.

She knows the full Name of this Man - how can I councel her? What steps and proceedures have to be done?

What rights she and her Baby have?

I am only familiar with the Laws in this case in germany ....

    Hi,

Sad as it may be, you do not have the experience to know what steps or proceedures would be necessary for her to locate and then persue the alleged father through the US legal sytem.

Neither , I suspect are you going to be willing to to provide her with th necessary funds to do so.

Unless you are prepared to provide the necessary funding to assist here through the US legal sytem I suggest you dont raise her hopes in any way.

The fact is the guy may or may not be the father, locating him is going ot be difficlt, getting him to agree to a DNA test is not going to be any easier, if the US Courts were to determine to be the father ther is no guarante that he will pay maintainence

    for the child.

I am sorry to be so negative but the chances of a satisfactory result for this lady are stacked heavily against her.

  2. Any help would be appreciated,

I am an American single father have been living in Thailand for the past 8 yrs. I met a deaf Thai lady 5 yrs. ago and we lived together for the first 2 1/2 yrs. happily. During that time we had a daughter unmarried. Daughter is now 4 yrs. old. and subsequently 1 1/2 yrs. ago my gf decided she didn't want to be a mother anymore and just walked out, but kept contact for a few months after. I was advised about a year ago to file a police report to state the mother left, which I did. I am trying to go home for a visit to see my family as well as business, but have been refused a passport for my daughter. The Thai amphor office said I needed the mothers signature in order to process the application, but before the mother walked out I asked if she would help get our daughter a passport and she stated she wouldn't sign any papers for such documents. (I believe feeling she wouldn't see her child again or for unknown reasons to me) This wouldn't have been the case as I offered to fly her as well, and possibly see her own mother that has done the same thing to her 15yrs. ago. and moved to America to remarry with no contact afterwards.(abandoning her, sad yes!) My gf's father still lives somewhere in the essan area, but don't know where. My question is what can i possibly do to obtain a thai passport for my little girl to bring her to the USA to meet her grandparents and return to Thailand as I plan to stay here until she is fluent in all aspects of the thai language and her heritage here. She attends a good school but it is difficult for me to maintain this fantasy that one day she and i will be able to move freely for our families well being.

I also spoke to the American embassy and they only asked why I waited so long to register my daughter, good question!

So now they are asking for a DNA test to prove I am the father but still insist on meeting and interviewing the mother. Where ever she is.I am registered as her father on the birth certificate and house registration, also have copies of her mothers ID and police report, but to no avail.

I have been told I have no rights under thai law and even a lawyer told me to buy a house to prove that ******* is my daughter.

I have a business consultancy firm overseas so don't hold a work permit at this time, but have in the past. At times I need to leave in order to meet clients, but have turned down contracts because I wont leave my daughter behind. I am living with a new lady that has helped tremendously with my daughter, but I also feel guilty for her burdens, as she isn't the biological mother but cares as if she were.

What legal options do I have, and is it possible to get a thai passport without the mother present?

I was thinking if i hold her thai passport the American embassy would be a little more forth coming with their own.

Please advise thanks with some in site or experience.

    S.

    Hi,

Saying "its a good question" does not explain why you chose not to register the child over the past 4 years, and with respect

failing to do so naturally will invite suspicion from the authorities of each country.

Again, and with respect, I find it quite understandable for a mother to be afraid to allow her daughter to leave the country, as you may be aware there is currently another posting concerning a thai lady who has a child in NZ who wishes to return to the LOS and is prevented from doing so due to the childs father getting the the Courts to agree to prevent the child from leaving NZ.

Irrespective of her reasons, the fact is the mother has made it perfectly clear to you that she will not sign any documentation that would allow the child to leave the country and without her full agreement you have no right to try to take the hild out of the country.

As you also stated you have recieved legal advice that confirms that you have no rights in Thai law it appears to me that the lawyer is talking out of his backside/ on the make in suggesting you buy a house in LOS.

As you know Farangs cannnot buy a house only a lease, and even if you held the lease to 1000 or more properties in LOS

it would not alter the facts one little bit.

After spending several years with the childs mother it is remarkable that you have never once in that time visited her fathers home or even know his address or phone number, perhap's even more so as the childs mother is apparently deaf.

You say that you are shown to be the childs father on her birth certificate and the house book, which housebook is that and who actually owns the house?

I also note from your post that you have a copy of the mother's I.D. and Police Report, do you have the mothers permission to make those copies and to present them to the thai authroities in order to apply for a thai passport for the child?

For what reason was the Police Repeort obtained and was it you or the mother than obtained that Police Report?

Can you explain how those copies came into your posession?

Other than to confirm is actually your child the DNA test will not alter the fact that the childs mother does not want you to take the child out of the country, or the fact that as a non Thai your wishes amount to nothing in LOS.

In fact I dont think that you can legally obtain a DNA sample from the child without the mothers express written consent.

I am sorry if you think my my questions are a bit invasive/ offensive, but its my way of alerting you to the fact that it is very likely these and perhaps more searching questions are likely to be put to you at some point by the various authorities

and I suggest you make sure you have the appropriate anwers ready to hand as answering " thats a good Question" will do you no good at all.

With all due respect, I am fairly confident from your post that you are not without the financial resources to locate the mother if you really wanted to, over the period you were together it is highly unlikely that you did not meet any of her friends or family or at least know the places she frequented when you first met.

I suggest it would be very foolish for you to continue to ignore the mother wishes, no good will come of it, far better you swallow your pride, bite the bulllet and use your wallet to locate the mother and once located dig as deep into your pocket

as it necessary to persude her to sign the relevent documents and to attend the meetings with the various officials to achive your objective.

  3. Sup guys, I'm gonna leave for Thai and will have tons of free time. Thought I pick up playing the piano. How long and what needed to be able to start playing Chopin's Nocturnes. I really don't care about reading notes and certification. I just wanna be able to play Chopin's stuff. I'm in love with him.

    Hi,

Its very unusual for farangs to chose to learn to play the piano in LOS, having said that I understand that many farangs are

    masters on the fiddle.......... :whistling

  4. torrenova, Mario2008, thaihome, think_too_mut - Thanks for all the info!

mgjackson69 - Thanks for detailing your experience, I think I will go about it exactly the same way.

I want to do this on a sunday because 14th september is our anniversary and it would be nice to be able to marry on that day (we are not having a wedding ceremony yet).

Does anyone know any Amphur open on sundays?

    Hi

I understand the Ampur Staff who process such applications do not work on a Sunday.

If the wedding really must be on Sunday the 14th I understand Elvis is avaliable 24/7 for weddings in Las Vegas :o and I wish you both the best of luck wherever and whenever the wedding takes place.

  5. Good havens! The things that some people will do, I was reading up on this subject on other forums both doggie related and morons general public 'How do i...?': one person admitted that they gave their dog valium prior to a bath - I can only assume that the bath-time in that household is not fun. ( I shower my two and they generally stand still and shake to order when on the rinse cycle. :o )

I have recently completed (twice - there and back) a 500 Km trip over about 6 hours or so with the dogs (4 1/2 months & circa 16kg each) during which they were perfect passengers. Only one was sick on the journey up country and that was my fault as he was fed late that day - too close to our departure time. I wanted the last meal to be about six hours prior to the trip.

A long walk before getting in the car to tire them a bit, and I admit (shame on me) to removing their water bowl for a few hours before - but they get water during the trip. I want to avoid accidents during the excitment of starting the journey.

I stop at service stations when they appear restless for a short walk and sniff around. But otherwise they sleep in the back seat inside the cab. I have a pickup and they normally travel outside for short trips to the beach etc. One prefered sleeping across my lap during part of the trip - I think he was cold with the air-con running for a few hours - they curl into a tight ball and occassionaly glare at me.

A friend was surprised that I travelled un-drugged (the dogs not me silly!) as he felt it was bad to allow the dogs to 'suffer' - it has not been my experiance that they suffered in the slightest. Waggy tails!

I was thinking it was a training issue again, getting dogs used to connecting car journeys with fun things rather than bad things, having more visits to family houses where the dogs are fussed over or the beach. In my past experiances (20 years ago) dogs have always like going places - woods, beach etc.

But I wanted to be aware of what was availible doggie drugwise in case I encountered a situation that called for chemical action when time or other factors had overriding priority. That said I can't forsee these dogs having problems with travelling. Dose per Kg per hour of sleep required ??

All thoughts and comments most welcomed.

    Hi,

My 3 GSd' come out in the car with me 99% o fthe time and go mad if left at home.

I am aware that some exhibitors/breeders use a tablet known as ACP but I would not recommend using it as the reaction is very different between dogs even when they are equally sized.

I have used ACP Years ago and on the Vets advice) and I crushed a half tablet and smeared a bit of butter on a finger then rolled the finger in the tablet dust and rubbed it on the dogs gums and withing a few minutes the 35 or so kilo dog's legs gave way like a shot elephant, he was ok but I never used them again.

I know that some people use these tablets almost daily to keep their dogs quiet, why they keep dogs is beyond me.

Travelling with a dog in the car is about planning, if you prepare for the dog to be sick by putting down an old blanket you wont go far wrong, the more often the dog travels in the car the quicker he will get used to it.

Please dont use a sedative for your dog unless precribed by your Vet.

I would hope you wouldnt risk taking a sedative yourself on the advice of a member on a forum, (but then I am not so sure!) so why risk it with yor beloved dog?

  6. I suggest adding some rebar to your existing wall. Add it where it points out horizontally towards the oncoming vehicles at about 4 feet or so in height. So that when they come crashing they will be sure to have some come through their windshields and spear them. I’m sure when the word gets out about the sudden and tragic deaths traffic will be minimal.

    Ding Dong,

Your comments above confirm it is appropriate for you to be known henceforth as Ting-Tong :o

  8. I am saddened by the absence of men available for a good strong traditional Thai massage. While most women are certainly capable of holding their own to give a good athletic massage, I had yet to find many men up to the job. There are an abundance of strong men at the blind massages on soi 20 Naklua, in the "gay" area around Tuk Com, and more blind on 3rd rd soi 17 but I've either steered clear of the gay massage parlours and the blind massage parlours tend to be noisy. I was quite pleased that a ladyboy has been hired at my local on soi Buakow: Sukkhai Massage School (150 baht/1 hour) a few metres from the Buakow market south Pattaya end. Super clean and quiet.

Way too much info for me, seems more likely you are trying to get this place some free advertising which is against the TV rules as I understand it?

  9. Sorry I've been very busy lately.. Next month I'll fly back to Thailand again! Considered staying in Bali, but I miss Thailand more.. Like people have said, it hasn't stopped yet! Last month she told me she'd give me my money back at the end of August, so I gave her a call on the 23rd (saturday).. She told me that she had the money and would send it to me after the weekend. !!She also told me of her plans to buy a ticket to Bali!! Monday she replied to my SMS that she was busy and she'd send the money in the afternoon.. Her phone has been disconnected ever since.

Don't know if I'm allowed to post this but two months ago I sent the money to MR.ROBERT JOHN PETER TAYLOR in Phuket.. Wondered if he was maybe a friend of anyone..

Dont think he has been a friend to you, she is too busy to send the money so forget her and the money, but we know you dont want to do that so do what you want but please dont bother complaining about it later when you are on the bones of your arse

  10. Nearly 2 years ago now I was almost in a similar situation. At 1st she did everything perfect. Got past my better judgment and she made me like her. Then a week in to the relationship her phone started to ring at 3 in the morning continuously. Took me till the morning to work it all out. And then over breakfast I told her I see in to her.

And then got a blow of cornflakes on my head.

    :D:o

So was this an isolated outburst or is she a cereal offender?

  11. Hi All

Just wanted to let all who may have followed my story or offered advice know that today my wife picked up her passport complete with brand new 2yr settlement visa, and we are both extremely happy after an anxious couple of week of not hearing anything from the emabssy.

Not even an interview or a phonecall - just 2wks after submitting the application we had a message on the UK Vac website saying the application was ready to collect. Initially we thought it was a rejection as it seem to emphasise that the application was ready to collect rather than the passport more importantly. My wife jumped in a taxi after i called her to tell her something was ready to collect, but that it may well be bad news. Instead she collected a large envelope containing all our papers along with passport and complete with visa!!! Amazing really and im still a little shell shocked at how easy it has been!

To be fair i put a lot of effort into the supporting documents and if anyone would like me to upload them please let me know. I will be happy to edit out the personal bits so people can see the template we used and use it if they like.

One quick question - are we able to purchase a one way flight from thailand to UK or will she still need a return to satisy passport control?

    Cheers all!!

Great news and well worth the wait!

Best get the food shopping done before setting off on the trip to the uk!

    All the best

  12. These Thai women were prepared to work prostitutes anyway.

Whether it be a pimp, prostitute or brothel owner should know that there are extreme risks involved with working in the sex industry for many and obvious reasons.

These Thai prostitutes are undesirables that had been taken advantage of by some other undesirables.

Sorry, my sympathy level for these girls is, minus 10.

You are not sorry, just a sorry excuse for a human being

  13. Australian court jails woman for keeping Thai sex slaves

MELBOURNE - An Australian court sentenced a woman to 10 years in prison on Friday for making five Thai women work as sex slaves in a brothel.

Tang Wei, 44, is the first person in Australia to be found guilty by a jury of possessing sex slaves, under federal anti-slavery laws introduced in 1999.

During the eight-week trial at the Victorian County Court, the prosecution said the five women were brought to Australia with the promise they would be able to work legally in the sex trade.

  14. The OP asked What it takes to get them to listen? translation; Thais don't listen, well here is a good example. my 9 yr old son and I were in the states this summer and I asked him to tell the waitress we need something. He came back and said with great surprise and excitment in his voice: Dad she lsitened to me. I asked: So, what did you expect? He replied: "At home (koh samui) they don't look at me and just blow me off when I try to talk to them" from the mouth of babes! :D
And speaking Thai dosent help,! i have a very good friend thats a doctor here and is fluent, its even worse for him as they DO understand him and still do it wrong !,.Reading some posters comments here i think they are in a different Thailand to some of us,.and its to be expected that some members have come galloping in as Thai defenders and to you i say you are lucky if you have never expereinced some of the problems others are discussing,.but to say it dosent exist is a joke,.

maigo6 and his likes are SEXpats.

they stay in cheap furnished studios, and only hang around bar girls, waitress and food cart vendors

They speak thais because they dont have the funds to live the life of a farang/bkk thai/ in thailand so they try to be at the level of thai farmers, who are quite happy with 4 walls, a leaky roof and some colon meat.

don't worry, most of the normal farangs, just read this post.. sigh in approval and keep going on.

    Normal? <deleted> is Normal?

Guys with gals is quite normal, guys who complain about farngs hanging around with Bar girls often bat for the other side or are either jelous or just liars, :D

    roy gsd

Jealous ? Most anybody with a few bhat in his jeans can procure a bar-lady , so what is your other excuse ?

Not sure if your question is directed at me, but just in case it was, the fact is I dont hang around with Bar girls and if I did I wouldnt need an excuse for doing so.

Who would need an excuse for normal behavior? Only a dumb plucker (or something like that) I guess. :o

  15. The rural ,poorly educated Thai that I mix with every day of the week dont even anticipate where their next meal is coming from until they get hunger pains.

after you finish your current meal do you honestly plan your next? when hunger sets in so does the natural instinct to decide what would be best to eat next. right now i'm munching on some peanuts along with my beer, but later i have no idea what i'm going to eat. does that make me poorly educated? i'm leaning towards a pizza, but that is fattening and not so good for my diet, so maybe I should go get a salad, but at this hour I'm going to have to make it myself. I guess I'll just starve because I can't figure it out due to my poor education (and intoxication).

Actually due to the intoxication I will probably just grab everything in the fridge and through it together in the pan and fry it in oil and season it with my random seasonings. Maybe I am educated after all, I've planned for my next meal.

    Hi,

Not educated at all, just pissed!

There is a world of difference between "Knowing where your next meal is coming from ( which was what Dom said) and "planning your next meal after you have just finished your current meal" which Dom did not say anything like that.

Perhaps you should get in a takeaway rather than risk burning the house own? Dont want you getting your fingers as well as your ears burnt all on the same day do we? :o

  16. Thanks for you points they are really helpfull. With regards to crime its all down to common sense put yourself in the wrong situation and then your a target.

The area was not too keen on was Lami I just found also of areas a little too sleazy. I really liked the laid back atmosphere on Chaweng beach and much prefer chilled out places although we did venture around green mango area a few times and that ok depending on how many beers you have had.

In terms of expats - we would ideally like to live in an area with a mix of nationalities (with those who speak English) we are in out mid - late twenties so would really want to be around people of that age if possible.

My husbands work is taking care of visas and work permits at the minute so dont really have to worry about that hopefully.

Our max budget would be 30,000 bht per month and my husbands work is located in Bohput so any where with easy reach would be ideal.

    Thanks

your husband's job here is "taking care of visas and work permits"? :o ...Thai visas and work permits? :D ...so why are you asking us about Thailand if your husband is a Thai lawyer? :D

I hope you have misunderstood what the O/P has said, when she said " My Husbands work is taking care of visas and work permits etc" I took it to mean that her husbands company was dealing wth the visa/work permit matters.

me- where do you want to go today?

me- where do you want to go today?

me- where do you want to go today?

me- where do you want to go today?

me- where do you want to go today?

Same -same my house, especially if the TV is on, Whoops what am I saying, if the telly is on? The bloody telly goes on within a minute of her getting out of bed usually, she may be in another room or in the garden but she still gets the right hump if I turn the tv off as I often do.

Got two remotes for the tv, took her a few days to realise it was me and not the tv on the blink! Not to be recomended, got the silent treatment for a few days, but I enjoyed it at the time.

  18. Was that history lesson sponsored by the National Front as it certainly seems like something written by them? My understanding is that once upon a time, England saw itself as very important, and went to other countries on the premise of bringing the benefits of English civilization (sic). I will leave to others the discussion that the English showed up in lands where they did not belong to rape, pillage and loot.

One of the offshoots of the English occupation of countries was the use of slavery. Unfortunately, for some of the slave owning colonialists, including the Church of England and the crown, was that there were Christians back in England that did not believe in slavery and and fought for its abolishment. With the loss of the slaves, enterprising profiteers came up with the concept of indentured servitude to ensure that the sugar plantations, farms, mines and other places of toil would continue to be staffed by cheap compliant labour. So off the Indians were sent to Fiji, the Carribean, to South America, Malaysia and Africa to do the dirty work that the English did not wish to do. As the contracts concluded, the Indians stuck around or migrated to areas where they would not be so harshly exploited.

Bearing in mind that England only left India in 1947, there was a long period of time in which England was able to syphon off India's natural wealth. The result was that Indians as a nation were put in an impoverished state for many years and prevented from naturally evolving as a society. As such, many Indians were forced to migrate out of the country to seek a better life.

Thailand was one of those countries where a hardworking Indian might be able to start a company without seeing signs in public areas that read, no dogs or Indians.

Indians had been making journeys to India for many years prior to the English invasion and occupation of India. There is a religion in Thailand that owes its origin to a fellow that hails from Nepal or India depending upon the historian's viewpoint. The people that introduced the religion into Thailand migrated there. Humans naturally migrate and this is one of the reasons that some Indians made their way into other parts of Asia. However, these Indians came with a message of peace unlike the deluge of English into Canada in the 1960's that saw many radical "unionists", militant communists and other riff raff show up to introduce their version of society building, and who have since been replaced by today's temporary English migrants politely termed yobs and louts that go to Greece , Spain and Portugal.

In respect to the Indians and other visible minorities that emigrated to the UK in the 1950's and 1960's, one should keep in mind that the UK government invited these people in. They were needed to perform the menial jobs the English would not do. Apparently, the dole was best suited for many indigeneous UK citizens.

I trust this answers the question. There is an old biblical saying: As ye reap so shall ye sow. It seems that had the English stayed in their own playground and not been so smitten with amassing wealth, they would not have had to deal with the Indian issue that seems to so distress poor Nignoy.

It odd that you end your biased posting with a quotation from the bible, religion has been at the root of much suffering in the world and this continues to this day.

Whilst I would not deny that the Uk did benefit from world trade and expansion your post is economical with the truth to say the least.

    France colonised Britain in 1066.

Spain Portugal Britain and France colonised much of South America including Mexico and the Carribean Islands.

America stole a huge chunk of Mexico ( Texas) from Mexico, Spain was heavily involved in Mexican affairs until after WW1.

The Fench and British fought and colonised parts of the North America and french is still spoken in parts of the US and Canada to this day.

The Greeks took much of Europe, Asia and Africa, as did the Romans.

Napoleonic France also colonised much of Europe.

Throughout the Centuries most of the countries in Europe were fought over and " colonised" for want of a better word by different countries, the Moor's from North Africa also controlled Spain for many years.

Parts of Africa were colonised by Britain, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Portugal Holland and Italy.

India and Pakistan was colonised by the British but they did have competition from other european countries.

The French colonised Vietnam, Britain colonised Malaysia and Burma.

At the end of WW2 Russia colonised many countries in eastern europe, and as recently as yesterday announced its approval of the theft of a large portion of Georgia.

During much of the colonisation mentioned above Slavery was a common feature, but you convieniently ignore the fact that Slavery existed in almost every continent and was not as your post would have you believe a British invention.

Africans were capturing and selling their neighbours to Arab Traders for centuries, but you appear to blame the British entirely for the Slave trade. Britan Purchased the slaves from these traders who in turn had purchased them from African's who stole them from neighbouring villlages and at times Aricans fought tribal wars and the losers were placed into Slavery.

Villages in Ireland and the South west of England were raided by North African ships and the entire population of those villages were transported to North Africa where they were sold into slavery.

Throughout history it has been a case of " to the Victor goes the spoils", and the US has not disadvantaged by its invasion of Iraq, true Blair supported the US invasion but the bulk of the population of the UK did not support anything other than the removal of Iraq's former leader and I suspect many americans are also concerned about what has happened since Saddam was removed from power.

When you say that England was responsible for this Slavery and colonisation, lets be quite clear, up until 100 or so years ago life for most of the population of the Uk was extremely harsh, kids were hung for stealing a loaf of bread and forced up chimneys to clean them of soot, it has always been the rich that control countries, the average person did as they were told or paid a heave price for daring to question their betters.

Whilst you stated above that "Thailand was a place where a hard working Indian might start a Company and not see signs

in Public places that read, No dogs or Indians", the experience sof othe rposters to this thread confirm that they have recently experienced Thai's proudly boasting "No Indians" in the development blocks they have been viewing.

You are very critical of British People and as you have made reference to Brits in Canada It is possible that you may be of French Canadian extraction, however as you have made absolutly no mention whatsoever of the problems associated with Ireland it seems more likely that you may be a disgruntled Irishman or sympathiser?

Whilst it is fair to say the UK is not without its problems, it is unfair of you to gloss over relevant facts of history in order to promote your anti-British views.

Don'tbeat about the bush, nail your colours to the mast and enlighten us as to where your personal hatred of Brits comes from.

Probably one item that most Thais are not aware of let alone use , is iodized salt , lack of iodine in the body produces retardation of the brain , put that together with a diet that contains insufficient calories and you may have some answers . What i have seen is that they use mostly coarse salt of the variety and far too much sugar in most of what they consume .

The local clinic in the wifes village give out free bags of iodized salt to every household, I helped carry the last lot and asked what it was for and who payed for it. The government give it free.

they should start giving i-can-read broshures with pictuers only of animals circling legs and breast as good and rest as bad that would up the national iq by a lot probably

Do you really think thais are not eating sufficient calories with all the rice they eat? i know the girls aren't since all they eat is those dam_n weird tasting veggies in sauce but guys seem to eat rice all day long from what i see.

Last winter i fed my gf 3 daily meals of western food. lots of calories.. during that time she was more active, less stupidly emotiona and was more coherent at all time, now shes back on thai food.. she's often loopy(just gave birth so it doesnt help), tired and forgeting words that she definately knows. the thai diet is definately missing a LOT

which is why i forcefeed here 2 big glass of milk minimum everynightso that her brain doesnt deteriorate...

Didnt have that problem in bangkok though, no farmer's market close and street vendors sold more meat

Another "trust me, I'm a- Docter whoops I meant to say adopted" character, whatever happened to freedom of choice?

  21. Poor old magoo, what a sad existance, sitting at a PC all day trying to make smart replies regarding technical things that he admits knowing SFA about.

I am sure I have met magoo, I am positive he is the guy sitting all alone at the end of every bar I ever went into simply because people avoid him .

I wonder why people dont like him, might it be his anti social behavior or simply because he spent to long with a shaved head and hob-nailed boots to learn social skills.

Might make a good thread... Why is Maigo6 such a misery a*se.??

    Hi Dom,

Maybe his tie is too tight for him? :o:D

  22. I have to say I agree totally with the OP.

I run a small business with 14 Thai staff. When I started I tried the tolerant, I respect your culture and your ways bit. That was until I realised what a mug i was being taken for. Now we work on a Western model. My wife (who manages the Thai staff) is no longer allowed to justify stupidity with a giggle and "Its the Thai way" she has to tell the staff. I work on the basis that my 14 Rai's are a corner of a foreign land that is forever England and if they work here then they work our way.

It has not been easy!!! 50% of the staff have been changed in 4 months and we still have a long way to go. Even though we pay 30% more than they would get locally and provide language lessons it is still an uphill struggle especially when they patently don't understand something but pretend they do. If I could find a way to explain to my staff that not understanding is perfectly acceptable and the sky won't fall in on them then i would be a happy man. But this never say you dont understand attitude seems so ingrained that however many times we tell our staff they still do it. This morning one of my western staff asked for beans with her scrambled eggs, the waitress took the eggs away then nothing. After 5 minutes I went in to ask where it was. I found the scrambled eggs sitting on the side and the waitress chatting to the cook!!!! A boiled egg was being prepared. Go figure!!

" Its the thai way" as you wife has explained to you already! :o

It maybe the Thai way but it is not my way!!!!! And since I pay the wages and my business is not a democracy its my way that goes. I maybe a barely tolerated guest but it doesn't mean I have to become Thai or accept within my business the Thai way. Outside I am tolerant and accept the difficulties that come with being a stranger in a strange land, I may not like it but I do accept it.

Mmm, Seems you may not have appreciated my humour, I fully apreciate your frustration and I loved the bit about the egg saga, it is typical of my own experiences over the years, that may be why I choses to visit rather than live in LOS, fo rthe moment at least.
