  1. Happened to me in Jomtien 7/11. No apology, but they do lose face, at least no assault.

Like others posted, I like to add up in my mind first. Wishful thinking hoping to slow the steady erosion of what was my mind. Plus fun to look at expression of clerks as I lay out exact change

  2. And don't try hiding your middle finger between index and ring finger. The boy scout salute, as it was known when I was a lad, is now considered subversive and anti junta.  Try irony and sarcasm: they don't get it and your might relieve a bit of stress. "Oh, I am so sorry you missed me walking across the street. I will take that kind lesson you gave me. Next time I will carry a flag and flares so as not to discomfort you while driving and texting some very important information I am sure!"

  3. You ought to know by now that Thailand is all about status. As someone on foot, you don't have any.

There is a jungle like pecking order when it comes to traffic: Big trucks then buses then vans then cars then motorbikes and lastly someone on foot. Clearly a sign you have no money. If you did, you'd be driving (Thais hate to walk anywhere it seems).

I approach crossing the street like bull fighter training. I'm not dead yet.....

Side note: City was repainting zebra stripes at crosswalk near my condo on 2nd road Jomtien other day. Asked them if they were going to fix the crosswalk light (It has worked one week in two years it has been there). "No just paint"

Perhaps that is for the best. Many Russian tourists stay at my condo. One might think they would see a crosswalk, light flashes "walk" and then assume traffic will stop. See you in hospital or next life

All Obama had to do was submit a qualified worthwhile nominee.  'Would've been a complete waste of the Senate's time to debate and then predictably fail to confirm Garland.   Garland was never more than a cynical play by Obama to try and score a few last-minute election points for the dems by forcing the Senate's hand into rejecting his lame duck appointee.  McConnell simply didn't bite which naturally set the wingnuts all atwitter.

Garland was qualified moderate. You could look it up. Senate republicans ought to at least have the balls to go on record that they wouldn't confirm simply because Obama nominated him. Same thing with that health care bill they ditched.

"Last minute election points"? Hello? Do you have any facts at all about this? 9 months left in Obama's term was how long it was blocked.  That is almost a fifth of a term, not a "last minute".

  5. I don't know which "Western Society" you come from, but in my home state of Oregon that would be normal and expected. I've seen it and I've done it. Not quite so many opportunities regarding crashes, as we tend to follow the laws (call it nanny state if you wish)... a bit better than ninny state.

I'm definitely liking the above because it is true as.

Trump got in, the others *cough* who should be in jail didn't.  In my opinion of course. I don't think there is one thing he hasn't done since coming into office he hasn't promised to do.

Immigration for one, sure yell out Islamaphobia.

Let me refresh your memory. Promised  Day 1 repeal and replace ACA with program that covers everyone, cheaper and better care. Plenty more where that came from

In many cases, I would totally agree with you.

In Thai media, they do that kind of thing all the time, regardless of any relevancy.

In this particular case, I would suggest that his occupation as a dancer in a gay bar is relevant just as listing any other occupation of an accused person.

That said, the phrase used was "gay dancer" rather than dancer in a gay bar. Do they really know whether the man actually identifies as gay? Many workers in such environments do not. So on top of the phrasing revealing irrelevant info if true, we don't really know if it's true.

I see your point. Of course we might ask "Does it matter to the case how he earned a living?" BTW love that avatar from cartoon I think Colbert had on the other night...

  8. I went to Cheoung Ek back in 97, and was alone on a sunny day. Couldn't help but think "there were lovely days like this when people died....".

S-21 was awful and sobering. I had the thought "It doesn't take much to convert a high school into a torture center" (I was high school teacher at the time).

Surely there are more killing fields sites not too far from PP. How about opening some others for tourists? I'm sure there some idiot tourists who smile, make V sign and shoot stupid selfies, but I would hope most would be respectful. Maybe set up a center and show a short film about the Khmer Rouge before allowing tourists onto the grounds.

  9. So she had to "drag" you to father's funeral. You may not have said anything verbally, but Thais are quite astute at picking up non verbal behaviors. It is already a depressing situation for her, and she probably didn't want to make it worse (and lose face) with you there scowling (even if micro expression of scowling). She was doing you, and herself, a favor.

She has invested 5 years of your life and she is still just a girlfriend. 5 years on your time line is very different from hers. In Thailand she is approaching, or perhaps already has reached "expiration date" regarding a permanent relationship. Try looking at it from her perspective

Neandathal man did survive and thrives in one small SE Asian country.

    Hey, let's not insult Neanderthals!

When you have police who see their function as collecting bribes, a justice system that is a laughingstock, what else could one expect other than "mob justice"? The "social contract" between government and governed does not seem to exist.
