  1. I think wise foreigners will not invest in any manner in Thailand. The situation imo appears irreconcilable. What that means in concrete terms, how everything will play out in the years ahead, few have that crystal ball.

Also, given the currency issues. I find the condo market a poor value. I think of what similarly can be bought in a number of coastal areas in USA outside California. After 17 years on/off in Asia - I have a solid girlfirend and first time I think about going back to states.

Finally- thuge economic mess in UK/USA that has been swept under the rug. And EU ...anything can happen from malaise to a blow-up.

But, Thailand has huge issues - it's not just the politics. Water for starters.

  2. Hi and thanks. Did not know that about WEP. Yes, PC is all secure incl "key scrambler". Banks using security auth Verisign/Akamai .

Still, I think I will find a small low traffic place and not use the aircard :-)

My friend had come up with some really cool ways to disallow virus to jump to a flash drive. He posted it here but they killed his link as he was a noob. He has written a number of nice little programs.

    Thank you

  3. Sorry, maybe I am making this overly complicated.

Can I get a one year extention of stay (covert to NonO) with the following:

    A. Change a TR

    B. Change a 30 day stamp

    AND ... the letter?

    Is it that simple?

They then extend my stay for 1yr single and by paying addl 4k I can get a multi which allows me to go in and out which allows me to not check into immigration every time i wish to leave and travel

Is there a checklist about for any minor details (ie photos, copies pp, copies bank book, ,etc...)

    Thanks - sorry

  4. Immigration only issues a entry in the process of extension of stay so it would be a single 90 day stay which is extended for one year. That requires proof of financial means and used to require 21 days remaining of visa or visa exempt entry but recent reports have spoken of 10-14 day rage being accepted.

Proof of residence varies with office - I have never shown a lease and have none.

If on extension of stay you do not have a visa but can leave/return using re-entry permit. That would cost 3,800 baht extra for multi entry.

Thai banks are insured and do pay interest.

Thanks for your response but I am really unclear on this.

Extension of stay - So, I would need to obtain a NonO prior (you state 90 day stay)? How do I obtain the NonO initially (by using a document from my embassy)?

    A. Change a TR

    B. Change a 3o day stamp

    C. Beg a NonO from Thai cons/emb

Financial means - Notarized letter from embassy OR letter and bank book 800k OR 400k

21 days for processing. 30 day entry (airport) or remainder of a TR?

"If on extension of stay you do not have a visa but can leave/return using re-entry permit. That would cost 3,800 baht extra for multi entry." >>> totally unclear on this, sorry.

By this you mean: If I have obtained a Non0 single and extended that to a year and wish to leave the country, I must use a re-entry permit (and all the hassles and B1000?) OR pay B3800 on the initial processing

    Thanks

PS: I bank with one of the most solid banks in US, would not want to be a farang standing in line for Thai govt to pay me out should there be a problem. US banks are messy enough when they go under. I am very concerned atthe manner in which Thai banks are issuing loans on anything and everything - but that is another issue.

  5. For Non-O Retirement visa, will I need to have apt rental paper in my name? It is in my girlfriends name and I think she wants to keep it hat way - so what then?

    Can I change a TR to a Non-O?

    Can I change a 30 day stamp to a Non-O?

Is there a current checklist on TV for this visa - current(!)?

I wish to make a visa under the following terms:

Not transf money to Thailand, but swear oath (I trust my bank, Thai banks - I dont [esp 0% interest])

    Multiple entry

Any vagaries I should be aware of??

  6. one of my biggest struggles at learning thai is the lack of permanence i have in the country. there is a certain level that until i met my girlfriend was enough. i am no encouraged to spend money on lessons and make huge efforts - here today, tossed out on my as tomorrow.

  7. if you are one a windows operating system a calc is included since 3.11

ok, ill take you on - sort of.

you can diy a 15 DAY STAMP for about b1000 incl cambo visa = 15 days

    OR

you pay the mafia 1900 for 30 days

    OR

you can fly in/out for about 2500 + overnight costs = 30 days

if you dont want to google it - try the search function on tv. if you need help with the math, there is a 10yo kid across the hall from me. maybe he will sort it for you for a few hours in the internet/game cafe.

as the girls from issan say - up to you

  8. Few mos ago my gf took me to a seafood restaurant that had reviews, a modest cafe sort of place. It was OK. Prices were OK. It was all just OK and the taxi out near Don Muang and back was about 200rt.

There has to be some great seafood here without spending a fortune. I am esp looking for live swimming crab of a proper size. Fresh Grouper/Snapper. Doesn't have to be Prachuap KKhan fresh - but these tiny dry crabs ...just criminal.

    THANKS

  9. I did not read all your post but perhaps you belong from whence you came.

I no longer live in Pattaya but I had contracted Dengue in Pattaya. I would put the stats at about 12 pers per week in the larger Pattaya area. Dengue is spreading all over Thailand but seems prolific in urban areas (sewers, cess pits...). FYI Singapore and Malaysia also have a problem. I lived through it - so can you (although I did not have someone to care for me and a 3day hospital check at PM wasnt cheap!).

I understand your concern about your stomach/toilet issues. You can toss in HepA as well. But truth is - its perfectly safe. I eat in the street all over Asia in (India, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia). The quality of the food has lessened but the hygiene is up. Buddy - this IS the 3rd world. I love Thai food. I LOVE street fod - I was even thinking of doing a video blog. It is a HUGE part of why I live here. Your issues come from perhaps:

    Spice in general

    Heat from chillis

    Time/temperature abuse

"Bad water" - fresh greens washed in water that ranges from a bit different from your home to down right dirty. Thais for 3rd world people are very clean. I am amazed at the care most vendors take being so poor.

Too close to dogs....anyone touching a dirty dog - som nam na. Got too close...what does it mean?!

If you have no symptoms, you likely have no problems. I will not waste time recommending meds - go back home and see a doctor. Do yourself a favor - stay there.
