  1. There will be war as it suits the Thai government by covering up domestic rows with an international conflict. The Americans are the world's experts on such smoke screens exercises.

At the end the Cambodias and the Thais will agree, that it was all a mess left behind by the French and hence a face-saving exercise will take place. The brotherhood of Hun Sen and the likes will prevail 8-).

In all practicality it should be awarded to the world and taken care of by Cambodia and Thailand together with the financial support of Unesco. It is a part of the Khmer empire which at that time did not know political maps of either country.

I've been there a couple of times and I fear that if the bickering goes on then long overdue restoration and renovation works cannot take place and irreparable damage will prove future generations on how stupid politicians were in both countries.

Overlooking the plains of Cambodia from the Phrea Vihearn summit is a must on the "1001 things to do in life", believe me!

    Agree 100%!

With everything? The war and the agreement that both will happen, the Unesco arrangement that should happen, and the personal visit that must happen?

Yes, with everything. There will be war...whoever "wins" the case at the ICJ...

It will not be an "all out" war, but I just cannot see the "loser" accept defeat, and loose face, without any sort of retaliation(s). And, at the end, it will be the fault of the French. And it is, somehow: in 62, they are the ones who supported Cambodia's case very very heavily...

As for the UNESCO arrangement...wouldn't you agree that it is the solution that would sort the problem out?

Last... yes, a personal visit is really worth it. I leave it to you when it will be possible again...

  3. On the terrace at the Oriental.

Buffet style, cooked to order specialities on request, and everything you could imagine in a breakfast.

Wonderful. It's one of the things you should do before you die.

Couldn't agree more. The best one, with style and a view....

    How much is it please?

From 7 till 10.30, with live music...."only" 1400 and a few more THB per person net. OK, on the very high side, I agree, but what an experience!

  5. I remember that in the late 70's, I was living in Totonto, BK (well known fast food restaurants chain) decided to change the styrofoam containers in which its burgers were served with paper bags. At the time, they claimed it was for health and environmental reasons.

Polystyrene is a petroleum-based plastic made from the styrene monomer. And the dangers associated with styrene were already known...well, 30 years ago!

Health: eyes and skin irritations, bad effects on the upper upper airway primarily, the central nervous and the gastrointestinal system, and... it was already suspected of being a potential carcinogen.

Environment: it was already well known that styrofoam takes at least 500 years to decompose...

    So, What's new? Nothing really.

Styrofoam for food for food and drinks" packaging or consumption should have been banned a long time ago.

But when you'll learn who the largest producers are, and that their yearly revenue amounts in tens and tens of billion ('yes, billion!) dollars, you'll understand why it is not, and not about to be banned...

  6. Many thanks for your response and advise Chicog. You maybe could have sworn you answered "this one", but it was not one of my posts!

To be honest, I do not feel experienced enough to play with the phone. hence the question "where could I go". Any suggestion?

I do not have any warranty concern anymore as I bought this HD2 quite a long time ago...

  7. I was under the impression that the US Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) specifies that one of the grounds for ineligibility for a visa was "“moral turpitude”. This term appeared in US immigration law in 1891, and directed the exclusion from the United States of "persons who have been convicted of a felony or other infamous crime or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude". The most common elements involving moral turpitude are: (1) Fraud; (2) Larceny; and (3) Intent to harm persons or thing (sic).

If my memory does not fail... I believe that Mr. T. was convicted in his country for for violating Article 100 of the National Counter Corruption Act. Isn't "corruption" a "fraud"?

Going by the book, corruption includes "misuse of office or position of authority for private gain" and fraud involves betrayal of trust....Does it not look like the reason why TS was condemned?

Well, than... his visa should not have been issued.

  8. I think, that when Chang gets it's supply chain back on track again, this beer will go as quickly as it came

Interesting. I don't think they should drop it as it is something different.

Have you ever seen this beer in your local 7/11 before the Floods disrupted the supply chains ? I haven't..

But indeed, I wouldn't mind if they keep it on, but I like the Chang Classic better. :burp:

    Totally agree.

And I do prefer the Classic as well....to me, the Export is as tasteless as a French Kronenbourg 1664.

In the meantime, at my local 7-11, I could buy the Classic for 42 THB and they now sell the Classic at 48 THB.... No choice as Classic is not on the shelves...a nice 15% increase.

  9. Totally agree, wish more people would be able to see this, unfortunately, humans are too stupid to see the big picture.

I must be one of the stupids because I think

when flooding is everywhere and only 50cm deep, everyone can save their possessions with the aid of a few bricks to stand everything on.

when flooding only covers one third of the surface area and the flooding in that area is 150cm deep, nothing will save your stuff.

So at the moment the decision would be between one third of the people losing everything they own, or all the people being inconvenienced.

And lets also face up to the fact that the flooded homes are now valueless, nobody will ever buy those homes. If everyone was flooded it wouldn't affect house values so dramatically.

I don't see that no one will buy those houses. If the multi billion flood protection scheme actually works, most concrete houses would be fine after the water has gone. It's not like European houses with plasterboard interior walls. One of my wife's relatives lives in a house with the tide mark from a previous flood 4 foot up the walls on the ground floor.

The house prices might drop, which would be a good thing, though.

What I want to know is what they're going to do with all those new cars in the Honda factory yard?

They are lost, and if Honda is well insured...insurances' premium will be more expensive soon!

  10. And before anyone accused me again of being a "Thaksin apologist" - i have no real problem with charges against Thaksin, as long as it is a free and fair trial, and as long as his collaborators, etc. are not spared - which is quite impossible.

So unless the coup-makers are charged Thaksin should not be charged for the crimes that lead up to the coup and that would never have reached the court system if he wasn't ousted?

Why should his charges depend on charges against others? Why can't we start somewhere and hope we down the line end up with all criminals in jail and out of power, even if it takes some time?

I don't think that i have said what you imply.

Again - i find it rather inconsistent by posters that cry for Thaksin to be brought to justice for his alleged crimes against democracy, and the same time ignore the 2006 military coup, which is also a crime against democracy.

As to who is supposed to be on trial or not, i personally would like to refrain from airing my views on this here right now.

You are right, it is inconsistent to cry for Taksin to be brought to justice and to ignore the leaders of the 2006 coup.

But perhaps, nobody - and Taksin to start with - wants to have the military leaders of the coup brought to justice as they would be forced to reveal the real truth and the real reasons that triggered their move.

  11. this is about the time when trauma sets in. It can be clearly read between the lines.

Chill out everybody, we all know it's not easy.

Some who suggest that the gates should have been opened I can tell you Bangkok would be literally dead right now.

Do think about those who hindered the opening of the major dam in September. It all would be not so serious.

More and more people, just talked with govt people, believe that a big land grabbing is on it's way.

Put the pieces together and you shall know.

i totally concur...and need to shout it because nobody seems to willing to listen:

DO THINK ABOUT THOSE WHO HINDERED THE OPENING OF THE MAJOR DAMS BACK IN SEPTEMBER!

And when you find the answer, then ask:

    WHY?

  12. On one side of the barrier the water is 4 foot deep.

On the other side of the barrier it is dry.

I can't help but think it would be fairer and have less economic impact for the water to be 1 foot deep everywhere.

With water 1 foot deep life can go on as usual for everyone,

But the rich like the poor to suffer the most in Thailand.

It surely would be more fair.

But realistically, do you think they can take the chance of a "controlled" flooding in the zones of high economical importance?

Central Bangkok is not as flat as it might seem. As a foot of water in one part might mean a whole lot more in other parts.

I'm happy I'm not the one who has to take this kind of decision. I feel it's something like: should we flood heavily 1 million people or lightly 10 million? It's one of these "Would you rather lose an arm or a leg?" questions. There isn't a right and a wrong answer.

    Yes how do you balance.

You need to fix your house with a flood 1 foot or 4 feet ,

but if your job is dead with 1 foot

    and still there with 4,

you can still pay for fixes.

The 300-400 BILLION baht needed for the repairs in government and loans will need to come from somewhere.

Which engine of commerce will you 'save or lose' to 'be fair'?

I agree I would be angry as a wet hornet if my place were flooded,

but more angry at who caused the flooding to begin with,

than those who have to manage it by the seat of their pants on the fly.

Now if all three things are mis-managed by the same crew in serial FROC-ups,

then I would be in a mood to throw the bums out. No confidence votes are

still how it's done using Democratic means, and legitimate street rage at

government ineptitude is still one of the ways those votes are lost by governments.

2.4 million people displaced by not properly managing this water for 2+ months.

No wonder the spin-miesters are in full backpedal mode.

I agree I would be angry as a wet hornet if my place were flooded, but more angry at who caused the flooding to begin with...

Good remark, and a good question: WHO caused the flooding to begin with?:

  13. Do they still get paid while they're on strike?

"In a hastily called media conference on October 29, Joyce said the airline would be grounded from 5.00pm on October 29, but that all employees are required at work as normal and will be paid until the lockout begins at 8.00pm eastern time on October 31. Once the lockout starts, those employees who are locked out will not be required at work and will not be paid."

  14. Yes its a great move by the CEO...alienate your customers and antagonise the workforce still further. Brilliant.

No doubt anyone who has a flight with Qantas or its codeshare partners will be leaping for joy over this move. Mind you those partners are just as cavalier about passengers needs.

You have thousands of passengers stranded around the world because of this stupid move. Given Qanta's record over the last 2 yrs with engines exploding and pieces falling of the planes and now this it will definately deter future customers from flying with them. I would predict that in 5 yrs Qantas will be no longer around. You can fly with Thai Airways on the same routes for a 3rd of the price and 100% better service. The cost of1st class with thai will get you cattle class on Qantas.

"I would predict that in 5 yrs Qantas will be no longer around" ?

The same prediction was made 30 years ago when all the pilots got laid-off !!!

  15. Charlem is certainly not a puppet. Taksin and Charlem have fallen out before. The danger always with Taksin is that he dumps people once they have served their usefullness; certainly those who would threaten him. I am sure Charlem is well aware of this and he certainly is his own man.

This is exactly what I implied in a previous post. I do think that Tee S will dump his sister at some point in time before soon... And Chalerm will be there, "clean" to become the Premier of a "new era"...
