  1. I think K-Bank give you the full works - ATM card, Internet banking and virtual card for online transactions without any long term visa or residency letter. They are also in my experience a decent bank. Even in the provincial branch I use they have some staff with a little English and all staff are helpful and courteous and I've had the same visiting their branches elsewhere.

K Bank by far the easiest.

  2. police said he may have suffered an hallucination that drove him to jump from the building.

Wasa not directed at you but how on earth can police make such a comment without a toxicology screen? Unless he suffered from a mental condition hence the hospital visit but if the doctors were to garner that much info how can they let him leave without help????

Oh sorry now I get it. Lets blame drug taking tourists regardless that way no investigation needed.

    Another life lost.

    R.I.P.

His mates told the coppers he was hallucinating.

  3. I agree. It is a matter of giving them respect, within their social structure. And if there are children present, a bag of inexpensive chocolates will be appreciated and hopefully shared. I would ensure each gift is nicely wrapped. Finally, do not expect them to unwrap gifts in front of you, or even immediately. In my experience, it is okay to leave price tags on. Check all of this w/gf.

I give the Nieces and Nephews the change that has ended up in my cars console. Love it.

  4. Health insurance? Expats coming over here with typical older age chronic medical conditions such as high blood pressure on medications will have a very hard time buying any private health insurance that covers for any connection to cardiovascular disease (as one common example). Before I moved over here, I was led to have the impression talking to expats that getting insurance was looser here than in the U.S. (pre-Obamacare). I don't think so. In other words, what is the real value of insurance that excludes the expensive and serious conditions that you personally are most likely to get? This situation wasn't culture shock to me coming from pre-Obamacare USA but I think it would be for people from countries that provide medical cover for all citizens. Living here long term, the health insurance access and recently inflated medical costs in Thailand issue are the main things that would motivate me to leave Thailand (if the situation doesn't kill me first). To "self insure" in other words to have a pot of money and/or credit available instead of good insurance which may be impossible to obtain involves a much bigger pot of money than many people realize. I think for retirees this health care issue is ultimately a much bigger deal than issues like buying vs. renting.

Ya I got all those problems. I go to a better than Western hospital here once a month for a checkup 500 to 1500 baht depending on lab work. The hospital has a new cath lab and all new equipment for testing. Top quality doctors and nursing staff. Never a wait and when I'm done the nurse calls me a cab door to door service. The nurses bring me green tea in the waiting room and the lady who takes the blood is so good I never feel the jab. The doctor prescribes generic drugs when possible. So it costs me about 2 or 3 thousand baht more than it would in the States where I got the pills from the VA because the Army poisoned me 40 years ago. I think it's worth it. I never trusted the Army after they tried to kill me anyway (actually they did kill me, I just haven't died yet).smile.png

    Every Month?

  5. Get your soon to be GF to take you to the local markets. Buy heeps of fresh food that she points out to you for Mum and the girls to cook up. Then off to Tesco and get a couple of bottles of 100 pipers and a case of beer.

Eat their food and DOOOOOOOOOOOOO drink with them all. It helps if you can play Thai card games for money!

Dont ask the soon to be GF what they are saying all the time. Just smile mostly, laugh at the times they all are laughing and never seem pissed off.

    Set for life!

  6. Actually the clip is popular within the Thai internet community and people are outraged by the way it is handled by the police.

What part of the police actions? Their getting video footage from the bar, showing it to the girl, getting her to identify they girl and then arresting and charging the guy after she left Thailand? The fact the court granted him bail is a clear indication at this point they are pursuing a case against him. Accused don't get bail when they are not accused / charged with a crime. Dad is simply mad that an accused person has been afforded the right to bail and presumably because a trial has already taken place that has found him guilty ... this is an understandable thing when victims and their families feel like they are violated because in all civil society the courts treat a person as innocent until proven guilty and if cannot be proven to be a flight risk or danger to the community they are also granted reasonable bail.

If I am missing something in this case then let me know but even the side we have heard so far being just the victim's indicates it is not going to be an easy prosecution. If she was raped, I am guessing she was, any defense attorney is going to bring up the fact she sent her boyfriend away (or he left her on her own that bar depending on version I have read) and chose to go out on a date of drinking and dinner with local and then invited him to take her home. The next question they may pose is if any injuries she received were from the boyfriend for going out and possibly having sex with the local. No saying any of this happened but a defense attorney would be reckless not to suggest this as a possibility and if she isn't here to defend such claims they he is likely going to walk but even with all this, the police have still charged him and are pursing prosecution.

Tell me what I am missing in terms of police handling this wrong?

I think why the Dad got even more pissed off, if possible, and made this video as I understand it is that the Thai guy confessed and was in the lockup then he withdrew his confession and then let out on bail. I dont know if this is a normal judicial process or what.

  7. No, Costa Rica is totally not an option for me, using the BANK ACCOUNT method in Thailand, no pension. Also, Costa Rica REQUIRES import of pension annually, also if income is not pension, they require IMPORT into CR annually an amount of 30K USD. Thailand requires no annual import at all.

For people with pensions, reasonable, that is IF you want to live there ... coffee1.gif

Marry a Tica. Many problems gone. Many new ones come.

  8. In what way is the visa hassle convenient if you retired early ?

Go to a country abroad every 3rd month ?

or forced to study thai & get interrogated every 3rd month ?

Over 50. Thailand has about the easiest retirement visa system on the planet.

Most countries that do have programs require PENSIONS.

BTW, one thing that can drive people crazy about the visa systems in general in Latin America is they are bonkers about "legalizing" needed documents in your home country. Much more complicated than just using a notary. Generally, people NEED to hire lawyers and often spend thousands of dollars and take lots of time getting things done. I am only generalizing but I really hate that stuff.

JT I found the Costa Rican food great. I didnt find it that boring at all. Lived there 3 years. One thing you can do there is buy and own land with not to many hassles. You are correct with documentation though. That is a real pain in the arse.

  9. Back on topic.

Yes thai ghosts are different. Like meny things in LOS us farangs just dont understand it. I have had many conversations about why only thai see thai ghosts and if they can see farang ghosts.

It is good sport until I take it to far and end up in the ghost dog house.

Take some food and sit in a crossroads at night and tap the bowls with a spoon. See what happens.

  10. I for one applaud Chuwit for doing this. They all new it was going to happen. Some were trying to sell their shitty little bars to stupid farangs as well. I have little pity for the owners of the bars.

A little birdy also told me Mr T was pushing to buy this place. This may had some thing to do with it as well. Chuwit was said to have a told Mr T not on the hair of your chinny chin chin, and went and made his park.

Chuwit, as is my understanding, is some what of a hero to the every day Thai for standing up to the so called elites. Running the "massage palors" means squat to them.

He may have made a great deal of his money through dodgy things but then again he is not robinson crusoe is he?

  11. Been happening for many years. Not just to Farang but Thais as well. GF was in a hurry to get to work. Was stopped at Suk/Asoke made to piss in the bottle. She was so very pissd off. Chatted with our cop mates from the same district. "Ah well thats the way it is" was the reply.

Walking past asok/suk noticed a friend being stopped in his taxi and searched . No passport. Stopped and had a polite chat about nothing to him and the coppers. A few smiles and on your way. It will happen, just be polite and smile and most of the time no probs. Dont start the crap with wai.gif ing. Just makes you look like a gullible knob farang.

Has happened to me in bars and clubs here as well. So what! Enjoy the free show. Dont stress about it.

Same shit diffeerent day. Dont forget, TIT guys.smile.png
