  1. Its obvious that religion hasn't work, Buddism with the Thais and Islam with the Muslims.

It is extremely doubtful that education would do any better there in the south than it has done in other geographic areas or provinces.

One cannot educate the already ignorant.coffee1.gif

You have religion with nationality then religion with religion "Buddism with the Thais and Islam with the Muslims" There are Thais who are Muslim. People are ignorant because they lack knowledge. Education can and does change people’s perceptions.

  2. Goodness, you guys are scaring me!

I will be visiting Thailand from the 7th August for 2-3weeks. How do I avoid all these things?! I haven't the money to be having police scam me or anyone else for that matter. A couple of dollars here and there I can tolerate, but not frequent or large fines etc.

If I just go to cheap places and don't engage in all the expensive tourist stuff will I be okay?

I don't plan on riding jet skis or any expensive stuff, I might not even use a scooter if the risk of fines by corrupt police is high.

    Advice please.

    Where shouldn't I go?

    What shouldn't I do?

    What places are safe?

    Thanks,

    Lothar

Dont worry about it. Have Fun!

  3. To answer to you guys above , if you get involved in a car accident by your fault , consequences will be worst .Much more money to pay with insurance if you own only a foreign and international driving license.

Driven with another countries license here for many years. Have had to involve insurances companies twice. No pronlems. Just make sure you have the delux insurance package. Please dont think because its not your fault you will be treated different than if it was your fault.

The old adage here in LOS is "if your were not here it would not have happened"

    Take care driving in Thailand.

  4. Can't read or write their parents' language. Just a dam_n shame, the incredible depth and breadth of the native literature that will be unavailable to them. Their brains are probably being horribly altered at these schools too, what with those wicked "critical thinking" and "analytical skills" being indoctrinated into them.

    ****ing foreigners.

This is exactly why Farang schools are NOT allowed in Thailand, until some 20 years ago, it is alleged that some corrupted official from the ministry of education take under table payment and start giving out license for Farang to open school in Thailand.

This has destroyed the language and culture ability of Thai people in Thailand. What a disgrace. I am such our father would have objected.

    Sarcasm anyone?!

    Is it?

  5. Hi,

To everyone critising me (Pakpinya) and Marquie - the author - I just want to tell you 'adults' that some, if not all, of you are just overreacting. Do any of you know us in the slightest bit? Do you know exactly how our lives work, who we speak to and in what languages? You don't, so why be all cringy and annoying by doing so?

Not going to mention anyone specifically, but I don't speak English to everyone, I speak Thai to my Thai friends, my mother and my family -apart from my sister- and I AM fluent Thai, if I wasn't then I wouldn't be taking my IGCSE Thai would I? I just have a bad accent and I'm unsure of what some words mean, and as I am more familiar with the English language, I prefer to read English books, watch English programmes etc. But it doesn't mean I'm completely ignorant and totally ignore the Thai culture. I do watch Thai news, converse in Thai etc. I just don't feel as comfortable as doing so as I would in English.

And to call my friend Marquie, the author of an article published in THE NATION, ignorant and foolish is just so below you. Just because she's a teenager and has achieved more than some of you in life already, or achieved more than your own children is no reason to judge her so quickly. Or is it because you're jealous of her? Hmm... I don't know

And some of you are forgetting that we, as students of one of Bangkok's best International Schools obviously don't even KNOW some of the..... less-known international schools in Bangkok. And we aren't talking about every single Thai student specifically either. Perhaps for those of you with children in international schools, maybe the school isn't as well-known. Because the well-known schools such as Bangkok Patana, NIST, ISB etc. will definately have this case of Thai kids being more comfortable in English.

And so what if we are? Who are you to judge? It's a part of our lifestyle and its just plain rude to judge someone like that, how would you like it if a random stranger judged you and your lifestyle after reading an extract from a newspaper

A word or two of advice.

Your staunch defense of your work is appreciated

    .

However you were a little bit naive if you honestly thought that when you or your publisher publishes an article (on any topic); your writing would not attract any criticisms as part of a wider discourse . If something, for example this article, is put into a public internet forum you will get a range of extreme responses, Don't take them personally, that’s just the way the world works. Authors need to 'accept' (but not privately agree with) the critics of your work. Don’t call your critics ‘jealous or under achieving’ if replying to them, it lacks class.

The number of posts shows your article has its merits asa good discussion piece.

    .

    Good work though keep writing.

hhaha ok cool good for you, but I didn't write the article, if you read what I had written through thoroughly, you would see that I am not the author, but one of the people she interviewed

I think he was giving you words of praise and some friendly advice. This is a good thing.

  6. Does the Director have any actual reason to believe the money is used to support terrorism? And who is being terrorized? Is talking about the Muslim insurgents in the south? Or does this guy normally make completely random claims with out any evidence? His department will surely see an influx of cash if he convinces people he is "fighting terrorism."

Bullshit! I cannot talk about diesel fuel but about gas or benzine. Since more than 8 months I refuel my motorbike with benzine from Malaysia, 30 THB a litre. Even the local police uses the makeshift fuel stations on the roadside almost everywhere. "Everyday low price" does not refer to TESCO any longer.

The fact that diesel fuel or any other fuel is also being distributed in the " North" ( I am living in Hat Yai), is just a question of availability and demand. And the borders to Malaysia are just to put a stamp in your passport if necessary.

Attached: Some tanks on the way back to HDY on the border bus.

    You sure thats Benzine?

  7. Thanks to the bravery of the Democrat Party and the resourcefulness of the People's Alliance for Democracy, the Thai people (and all us wise and loyal farang) now know the truth behind "NASA's" request for a so-called climate study center at U-Tapao: it's a facility to control the weather and cause natural disasters, granted to the US so that they can give Thaksin a US visa. It would be equivalent to surrendering Thai sovereignty to the US, and allowing them to use Thai soil to wage war against their enemies.

    Source: http://prachatai.com/english/node/3275

The editors at Prachatai are red-shirt cowards who refused to show the full evidence that the PAD revealed: that prototype weather control facilities have already been used to cause untold harm to China and other allies of Thailand.

    Source: http://www.manager.c...D=9550000075998

When the Democrat Party allowed the US to use U-Tapao for Operation Enduring Freedom, at least that was visible to the public. But who knows what nasty secret plans the US has for this scary new super-weapon?

    Tin foil hat people!

  8. 3R, Dont think so. optical amp with error correction. The main problem they will have is the theft and damage of/to the cable if it is run above ground. when we installed the Thai network back in the mid 2000s we were getting 8 breaks per day. A lot of this is because the locals were pinching the cable thinking it was copper. To bury this cable will be very expensive. All the buildings the equipment were installed in were existing TOT/CAT sites. No probs with the buildings being used for anything else. Quite secure.

  9. And volunteers in Phuket in 2004 were advised that they could no longer help without work permits (which would be impossible to get, unless sponsored by a Thai company), or face prosecution.

    That is just sad.

I wonder what sort of working visa you need to stop to help a little old lady who has slipped over.

Or to mow your own lawn or take your rubbish out and on and on and on.
