  1. Nope, have never left any tip.

Only have used them for 60 day extensions after the impending expiry of a 12 month / 90 day visa.

Always take wife and child to illustrate 'happy families', so they get too distracted to worry about extras!

  2. All this will do is move the problems 500m further south to the Naka junction.

And as one poster has already pointed out, the inconvenience and traffic mis-management during construction will be horrendous. I well recall the filth, chaos, and amazingly long time period that the 3-lane carriageway between Central and Big Tesco took.

  3. Following a recent recommendation here, I'm now a fan of the breakfasts at Wine Connection.

Even if not a buffet, it's a fair price - 154 baht. And the chance to relax over a decent cooked breakfast, with the newspapers, is a great way to start the morning.

  4. The article says "no bids".

So, is this not a good time for some appropriately qualified, business-like, foreigners around here to form a 'Lifeguard Company', and do this properly?

Thai company would be managed by farang, but still employ Thais who, I suspect, would be better trained and managed than before. Sounds like an opportunity to me.

Would certainly embarrass them if the only bid was from such a company, and they ended up turning it down. One for the Honorary Consuls - Governor agenda, I'd imagine!

  5. I think 'Hunters' is now located a little further along the road past Central.

Head towards Kathu, pass the furniture shops and Makro on left, pass HeadStart International School on right, then immediately after the school is a row of new shophouses - I'm sure Hunters is there.

  6. Totally disgusting.Just carry on exploiting these poor people and heaven forbid letting them have few days off to enjoy themselves.

He says in another local news source that quote"We just can't take the risk"Governor Tri told a meetingat Provisional Hall in Phuket City "A Burmese concert has never been held anywhere in Thailand. If something went wrong, it would seriously damage Phuket's image.

Phuket.s image what a joke.Phuket's image is already damaged by all the reports of tuk tuk ,jet ski scams and rip offs that are never nor ever will be addressed.Pity he can not ban theses so easily.

Funny I have found quite a few articles related to Burmese concerts in Thailand, this being the last one http://www.mizzima.c...ng-concert.html

Maybe if it had been allowed it may have helped Phuket's image.

Oh and this is the sixth year he has not allowed it.

You can blame people for their actions or inactions, but you can't blame him for the actions of his predecessors.

jerk.gif Predecessors? Where does he do that? He’s clearly quoting the current Guv and his inaction for the last 6 years.

You must be referring to the current governor's deeds outside of Phuket as well because he has not been here for 6 years. I don't recall any governor staying that long.

Current Governor used to be a "Deputy Governor" here - was promoted from within the Province, rather than move here.

Can't comment on the 6 year timescale, but he sure has been around Phuket for quite some time in his deputy roles.

  7. there's far too many lights on this island, i'm constantly frustrated by them.

Kind of agree with you, but the locals don't know how to use a traffic roundabout. So lights are the only option in some places where, I feel, a correctly-used roundabout would actually be better.

  8. Thanks mate.

Seems like there's a lot of football going on but not no real organised kids league where the kids play for a team or school and train together regularly and play different teams week in week out as they would in Europe then?

Like you say there are plenty of fantastic pitches these days, it would be nice if there was a proper association with different leagues for different age groups etc etc.

    Thanks again.

Nip into HeadStart school (opp Makro) and have a word with one of the PE staff.

They have football matches on all the time, so I'm sure they'll be able to happily guide you for kids football on the island.

Away from your chosen sport, there is quite a healthy kids set up for cricket on Phuket. Does that interest you?

  9. Given the following of United and Citeh in this country, 'discretion' appears to be being applied for this fixture : 2am kick off on Tuesday morning.

At least 2 bars in Rawai are saying they'll stay open:

    1) Nuan's / Old Tree bar, on the main road

    2) Yanui Sports Bar, on the short-cut road towards Yanui Beach.

    Any others?

  10. Kudos to the Governor and K Chairat.

It's sad that people are so afraid about nothing.

    Absolutely right.

What irritates me is that when rumour-mongers, fortune-tellers, monks etc say something will happen........ and then it doesn't, there's no 'doubt' enters the mind of the listener. They never seem to become sceptical of all the sh1t that's peddled around, and next time they hear it, they'll believe it again. This 'believe anything' is a very inhibiting factor in Thai society.

Mind you, if you say something often enough, the odds are that you'll be correct at some time!

  11. Is it now The Nation's policy to write an article every time Thaksin picks his nose or goes to the toilet?

Maybe a renaming of the paper is in order... 'The Thaksin Nation'.

This IS NOT news, or even worthy of any space or bandwidth.

On the contrary - very newsworthy.

A couped, then convicted, ex-Thai PM who was thrown out of UK (but having (seemingly) travel restrictions lifted on him going to Japan, France etc), and now is apparently allowed to go back to UK, is certainly an interesting development as to his 'international rehabilitation'.

This isn;t really about going to watch a football match, it's about a person who has had severe travel and residential restrictions over the last few years, slowly being allowed back in the mainstream.

There's more to this than meets the eye, for sure. Little by little, he'll worm his way back into international acceptance, and then it will be impossible to keep him out of his home country.

  12. Totally different and in-comparable. That's 'tax avoidance', not your 'tax evasion'.

How can I even think of cheating Thai Tax, when it's crystal clear as to how long the property has been owned? All I'm wanting to ascertain in that thread is what the difference in selling costs is, ie whether it's worth hanging on a few months, or whether it's worth cashing in right now. In either sale scenario, I will pay the correct amount of tax that is due as at that point in time.

I want to avoid tax as well. So what is your point? That it's ok for you to do it, but not for anyone else?

<deleted> - no you don't! You don't want to 'avoid', you want to 'evade'.

Look at the words / phrases you've used:

'fess up to it / get caught'

'pay a rather large amount of tax which frankly I do not want to do'

    'will send alarm bells ringing'

'by the books kind of guy which is useful except for things like this'

That's it, I've said enough on your honesty here. Now, taking into account the further information given in your subsequent posts, I also believe that, providing proof of source is provided, then it will be accepted as 'legit' in the UK, and won't fall into a taxation class I'm aware of.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying that your biggest problem is clearing the 'money laundering' hurdle with your UK financial instituion. Thailand was recently put on a watch-list for financial transactions, so expect above average scrutiny in anything you send back. Check the current status of this watch-list, as it sent a few shivers around the government here, and they promised swift action.

  13. If you should pay tax, then pay it. People like you are just as bad as the work-shy spongers who expect the state to look after them. Next time you want free NHS treatment, free schooling, pensions, and any of the social services that you get in UK, then I trust you'll offer to pay for it, and refuse to accept 'free' services. Hope nobody helps you on this.

hope no one ever helps you,if you are in dier straights,or in need, your either a troll,or a very selfish dolt,

Helping in a 'dire situation' does seem a little different to helping someone who can afford private health, private schooling and private pensions avoid their share on taxes, don't you think?

Troll - no. Selfish - no. Fair - absolutely.

    Oh really.

How about your thread..."Difference In Selling Costs" where at the end you say " So, for the latter, they cream off a bit more. But, how much more? "

Trying to save yourself some expense from a financial transaction are you? Bloody hypacrite. On your way sunshine.

    Thanks for you help.

FYI; I have and nearly always had private pensions, private medical, private schooling for my kids I do not have yet, and myself and family have paid considerably more tax than most UK people, and I have in actuality never taken much at all. So, thanks for your insight, now please proceed and stick your suggestion where your head is obviously lodged.

So back to the helpful people - any useful insights gratefully received.

Hope you have private roads, private police force, and private fire engines, as well.
