The fact that her insurance company paid the £20,000 (try reading the article) indicates that she had a licence to ride such a vehicle in the UK, because most policies issued in the UK stipulate that one must have a UK licence for the type of vehicle they are operating on holiday.

In the UK anyone over the age of 16 can get a motorcycle licence ( provisional )  and never take a test or even have ridden a motorcycle previously. It depends on if Thailand accepts provisional licences ( no test or experience required ) as a qualification to ride a motorcycle in Thailand.

  2. Haven't been for years but when I did I walked from the harbour then nipped into the 711 next to the entrance, bought a drink and some snacks then just strolled past the ticket booth. If challenged I just said I am staying at the resort and just came to shop at 711. Never paid for an entrance fee in all that time. The park officials go for the tourists riding on the songtows, so it is easy to slip past them as they are too busy going for the groups.

  3. I doubt it was intentional vandalism, it sounds like it was just high spirits that went too far. In other words an unfortunate accident, but the offenders  should be made to pay for the damages. Thais are definately over re-acting as this statement shows

The buffalo is being kept in a crumpled heap for a few days so people can say goodbye.

Surprised they haven't got monks there to do the funeral chanting.

Why dangerous? Often they use a yellow or white plastic pipe/conduit which is of a thinner material  than the water pipes. The absence of  elbows, tees, reducers, unions, couplings. junction boxes etc and glue seems to be the issue... the wires coming out and being joined in the open like that, where water can get to it  is terrible work. Of course there being no grounding/earth or fault protection allows  a pole to become live. In this instance the problem happened near a metal fence and power pole..... There was an example on 2nd Rd one time that was simply a puddle of water, .One need not look far to see plenty examples like this around town.

Pipes are colour coded for a reason, Blue for water pipes and drainage is normal for Thailand. It is dangerous because some unsuspecting  person could cut into a blue pvc water pipe to make a water connection thinking it did in fact carry water.

the big problem is getting money from a thai.....most are poor....and probably have NO job......or insurance !!!

I had an accident years ago, where a motorcyclist decided to overtake me on the inside as I was indicating and turning left. Although he hit me and fell off his bike he only had minor injuries. Although it was not my fault I had to pay for his emergency treatment at the local hospital (  only a few hundred baht for cream and a bandaid ) But the police told me I had to pay  500 Baht fine even though it was not my fault. I protested and asked them why. They agreed it was not my fault but said most motorcyclists are poor so they always fine the car / truck driver

  7. Even the country areas are noisy. Tannoy speakers blasting out Molam music ( ???? ) at 5.30 a.m. before the village head gives his morning gossip chat. And when they have village activities they hire a speaker bus,  a brightly painted bus that has been converted into a giant loud speaker. The heavy bass beat shakes every door and window in the houses. But all these people are getting their just desserts because it is making them deaf, as they have to shout at each other now.
