  1. After three weeks, there are no new girls in the business. But please be aware: there are hundreds of new Farangs to be fleeced in the game. All I can say is: Don't do here in the night-life scene, what you wouldn't do at home. Store this message dude, three-years from now you may read it and weep.

  2. I guess I'm missing something here, but the question begs; why would anyone want to start a business in retirement? I'm happily retired in the Kingdom for going on seven years now. I love it.

I spent close to half-a-century busting my buns in the American business machine. Now I'm enjoying the fruits of my labors, and one of them is certainly not working! :)

  3. Now matter how you cut it, the ATM fees are a rip off at both ends. If I withdraw 20,000 baht from my Hawaii bank, I get charged 150 baht at the Thai bank, and $4.00 by the US bank. Also, the Hawaii bank applies a 2% on the currency exchanged and a lower exchange rate. In my case it's the Hawaii bank that's doing the rip-off.

My remedy is to write a personal check for $1000 (backed by my credit card) on my Hawaii account and pay a 217 baht fee – flat…no hidden charges, plus I get a primo exchange rate. Just like traveler's checks.

Works perfectly…been doing it for years as I'm retired here.

  4. What she probably did was sniff the local machines on the net - locate yours, and then spoof your MAC address. This is a clessic example of why wireless connectivity is so insecure. 99% of users don't have a clue on these hacks, but one-percent do. I have no idea what the configuration of your system is so I can't advise on a cure. But the lesson here is; There is no security system that can't be overcome.

  5. HSDPA is currently in the test stage in parts of the Sukhumvit corridor and certain other areas in BKK. I'm getting 3G, but the signal is a bit weak (-90dBm) about 40 kBs. Stay tuned, because 2010 may see Thailand finally start to provide at least marginal mobile data service. :)

  6. A dear old friend of mine used to go panning for gold in the lower Sierras – for you non-North Americans, it's where we Yanks really fine-tuned our greed and sense of empire. At any rate, my friend David would spend his weekends slopping around in the tailings of old mining sites, in the hope of capturing a nugget, it was not to be.

His wife, not enamored to her husband's manly aspirations, said enough is enough. This was partly do to my chiding, in that if I wanted a gold nugget, I would just go to a gold shop and buy it. Easy – no freeways, mud, or slush.

Needless to say, my old friend accused me (obliquely) of being a sissy boy.

So – if I go to a restaurant and order shark or swordfish (in Hawaii) as my repast, then if I be a sissy and pussy, so be it.

    Dig in dudes, it's delicious.

  7. I use an AT&T air card bought on Ebay 2-years ago.

With AIS I get a consistent 180-200kps. With True it screams at 500kps to 1000kps plus. Many of the Chinese modems are not state of the art.

Sierra Wireless incorporates a booster battery and works world-wide.

    :)

Get a new Sierra card - problem solved. Be aware that there are some areas in Krungthep where they're testing 3G. Generally the Sukhumvit corridor and the major malls.

  8. The question remains. If the family plans to live in the US then he need only to apply for an immigrant visa for his wife. However, the issuance of a green card infers the intention of permanent residency. It is not a free pass for dual residency situations.

It appears that if the family doesn't intend to reside in the US then a 10-year visa would be the choice. As already stated, the application for citizenship requires a fixed term of unbroken residency.

If the wife has no criminal record or diseases barring US entry, then both options are open to the family.

    Good luck. :)

  9. Whether this is true or not, I've heard that if you are stopped by the police on an expired visa you will be taken to the immigration jail where you will fined and then sent to the airport. If you don't have a return ticket on your person, then someone outside of the jail will have to secure a ticket for you. This info may vary depending on circumstances, but it's worth considering.
