  1. Well I seem to have figured it out!

I've tried a few different DNS servers and I finally stumbled on Google's free DNS which seems to be working a trick! They are:

    8.8.8.8

    8.8.4.4

It was essential that I put these DNS addresses into my modem's DNS settings (disabled auto-configure), not just in Windows network adapter. After updating the DNS servers, I saw an immediate and drastic increase of speed, esp. on YouTube. So.... I win!

  2. Well the title pretty much says it all. My 4Mb line is usually quite quick for almost all other applications, but when it comes to YouTube it's pretty useless. Time of day seems to have little or nothing to do with my personal mileage and I'm getting fed up.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas how I can up my speed... to the max?!

    Cheers folks!

  3. If they offered you a certain amount, and you agreed to work for that, you aren't losing anything.

What they charge the school they place you in is really none of your business. Your business is teaching. Their business is finding teachers to place in jobs that schools have contracted with them for.

You seem to be suggesting that the OP should take a job with an employer he feels is unfair. That's just silly. The issue at hand is quite clearly not about agreement on a particular wage but rather fair business practices in general. I can't imagine many people would take a job knowing full well their agent was leeching 50% of their wages. Get real.

  4. The acid broke down the shrimp.

While I'm quite sure the shrimp turned into mush, it was not the acid's fault. There is a strong enzyme in pineapple, called bromelian, that works to break down proteins. This can be used to your advantage, of course, in tenderizing meat.

I personally cannot stand cooked pineapple, but how about a nice fruit salsa? I made a lovely fish fillet with mango salsa that made my girlfriend and myself make funny noises while eating it. :)

  5. Ok, this is actually REALLY easy: If something tastes sour, it's acidic. Heck, the latin root word "acidus" means sour!

I'm going to assume your wife was advised not to eat sour foods due to a digestive disorder. If that is the case, it is highly advisable to ignore charts like the one found on the site ballzafire linked. There is a trend in "new age" diets to prefer "ALKALINIZING" foods and avoid so-called "ACIDIFYING" foods. The basic concept is, despite a food's specific pH value, it might have a very different effect on body chemistry. This may or may not be true. I have read no scientifically verification either way for this fad thus I am highly skeptical of its veracity.

What I would suggest is: if your wife has been told to avoid acidic foods by a doctor, she might simply try not to eat sour things. If the issue is in fact directly related to the stomach, or alimentary canal in general, what does it matter how lemons might affect body chemistry if they are HARSHLY acidic in the digestive system?

    Good luck!

  6. Nio, which is more ridiculous: Making a post about an absurdly expensive steak, or, replying to criticize it?

I'd venture the guess that you're bored a lot.

Any way... While I think that buying and eating such a piece of meat is horribly wasteful and exceedingly decedent, I also kinda wanna try it.... What a hypocrite I am! :)

  7. My brother is visiting me here in LoS and he's eager to see some live Muay Thai. We'd like to see some decent fights but time is a bit of an issue. As it's 12:12am Monday morning now, we're wondering if the stadium at Tha Phae is any good at all. I've seen plenty of fights around Thailand and he's been to Lumpini once so we're not just in it for the novelty.

If the only decent fights happen on Fridays at Kawila that would be unfortunate but we'd rather not "waste" money at a demo.

    Thanks for any tips!

PS - I searched the forums but the most recent posts are form May this year and they don't rate Tha Phae stadium specifically. Cheers!

  8. Thanks, astral. I just spoke with a friend, he got a screen replaced at Pinklao (sp?) for free while under warranty. That's obviously a lot further than Siam Discovery, one of the listed MacCenter locations.

    Thanks for the tip! :)

  9. While in BKK next month (I live in the sticks) I'd like to get my MacBook's white plastic case fixed. It has a few cracks on the keyboard face/cover, and one chip is completely missing. Also, my battery was one of the ones recalled by Apple a while ago and is quite swollen (to the point it lifts the right side of the computer a few millimeters). I'm actually worried it might split some time soon!

My MacBook is well out of warranty but these are recall issues and would be fixed for free if I were in any western country, but what about here in LoS? Does any one have experience with either of these problems or other under-warranty / recall issues? Are there stores that are known to be more generous or reliable (or vice-versa)? I have used the large Apple store in MBK for a minor repair, but they want 1000B just to look at a computer, seemingly regardless of the issue or warranty status. I'll be staying in Lower Suk area, so anywhere around there or Siam Square would be preferable.

Thanks in advance for and and all help!

  10. I rated my topic 5 stars too... 555! And I think you're right, some people just get nasty!

If this feature is so heavily abused, why not just do away with it? I almost never see any threads rated higher than 2 or, at most, 3. So if they're not a good guide to the usefulness of a thread, why have them at all?

  11. Hey everyone,

I can't even begin to count how many times I've been asked by friends, family and even just random tourists, "Where should I stay in BKK for 500 - 1000B?"

Well I have a few suggestions myself and I will share them in hopes that other will do the same! :)

Sukhumvit Soi 6 has a few places that range from 585 - 2000B. My experiences have always been positive and will definitely stay in this area again. Of course there are more budget rooms on Soi 4 but on Soi one can avoid the circus that centers at Nana Plaza, if one so chooses as Soi 6 accesses Sukhumvit directly.

For a hotel reasonably close to Suvarnabhumi Airport there is the Nasa Vegas Hotel on Ramkhamhaeng Road. The rates range from 690 - 2800B but they offer free use of their "Health Club" and a few minutes of internet for free.

North of Khao Sarn Road, around Samsen Soi 6, there are several places I have used. My favorite is Nakorn Pink (on Soi 6) which has a wide variety of rooms suitable for solo budget travelers, long-stays and even accommodations for families. Basic air-con digs are 490B or 590 for a more modern room with hot water. Here's a review by Travelfish.

Right in the heart of the shopping district and opposite MBK Shopping Center is Soi Kasem San 1 with several places in the range of 700 - 2000B. Most of the cheapies are tiny (but clean) box-like rooms boasting comforts such as air-con, hot water and internet in the lobby.

Well there ya go, hotels suitable for a low to moderate budget in several interesting parts of BKK! Any comments or questions are welcome!

If I'm going to be completely honest, my motivation for posting this was actually a bit selfish. My brother and sister-in-law are coming for a visit at the end of this month and I was thinking it would be fun for me to find a new place to stay around the 700B mark. Can anyone please help me find a new central place with air, hot water and TV? Anything around Pratunam, on the BTS or near Suk would be cool! We would be grateful for any tips offered!

    Cheers folks!
