Man, rough deal! I hadnt realised healthcare in the US could be such a rough trip. Glad you've got things sorted now.

Let me give you a for instance about just how bad health care has gotten in the U.S.

    hi jack,

I have BUPA platinum and when I take my two week vacation in the states every year, I pay about 3000thb for an extra coverage that covers about 150,000US$....................supposedly.

Have you been offered or looked into the same when travelling to the US?

  2. thank you very much living. looks like i might be going with C&N. thanks again everyone

Good call, get the VIP room with the big tub and lots of bubble bath, the girls love it.

P.S. (and reason for edit) there are two C&N's be sure to get the one above Soi Katoey, I mean Soi Bangla.......

  3. Yes your right. Sofitel is a pokey little place. 3 star rooms , 3 star service and a shitty little 7000 sq metre 3 star pool.

You couldn't pay me to stay there.

What about customer service. It probably costs 200Baht in fuel to the airport.

I would expect free transportation if i stayed there.... but i only do 5 star

Why doesn't the OP say to the Sofitel, "transfer me at no charge or I'll book elswhere that does have complimentary service".

There are a ton of Krabi Hotels that would love to have your business OP, have you paid for the room already?

P.S. and reason for edit-I can't believe they advertise a golf course. It's more of a mini golf or pitch and putt, 4 clubs and you're fine 3,7,9 and putter, good2go.

  4. Exchange money at theh SCB Kiosks, they are usually fine.

When I used to come over on vacation I liked The CNN right across from the top of Bangla, stumbling distance from all the girlie bars and discos, take the VIP room if you can, for a bit more you get this massive bathtub which lends itself well to three, if you get my drift ;-)

Regarding safety and being ripped off, just stay away from tuk tuks. To get around Patong further than walking distance, the motorbike taxis are a better deal.

    Have fun.

  5. I'm retired in Pattaya Thailand. I invited my sisters to visit me from Australia for a Thai tour. Their friends in Australia said about Phuket...''don't go''

I live in Phuket and sell products to the hotels and resorts.

I wish someone would slap my French boss for getting all over me for my sales coming down since 2007.

2008 riots, airport closures, red shirts etc.

Now this kind of press................yeesh, tourism industry here is taking a big hit.

  6. Hope they catch the man who attacked these Tourists.

Having said that though, It is like Parking the Car on a Motorcycle Taxi Rank - There are no signs telling us not to, we just use our common sense really and not park there to avoid this type of trouble.

The tourists on holiday should have moved on really to avoid this, afterall, they are visitors in this Country.

That is what I think anyway.

Anyone who condones violence should be beaten to death with a blunt weapon.

That is what I think, anyway.

    This is right on.

Any of you who are blaming the victims, are basically saying assault is o.k. with you.

On that note, why don't I come over there and beat the F**ck out of you for thinking like that?

    It's o.k., right?

  7. I presume you mean Kata Palm Resort, or do you mean Palm Hill Resort (in Kata).

I agree there was most probably no action taken against the perpetrator, but how can you be sure there was no action taken?

I apologize, I might have gotten the name of the hotel incorrect.

Truth to the matter at this point, yes the tuk tuk driver took a large piece of wood to four people, two of them women, two of them elderly, in Kata.

At this point the BIB in Chalong do have the perp and PG is on the story.

  8. A co-worker of mine's parents, brother and sister in law were parking near Kata Palm Hill Resort when a tuk tuk driver told them they could not park there. They got out, looked around, no yellow markings on the ground, no tuk tuk designated signs, clearly public parking.

They parked and began to remove things out of the trunk to go to the beach when the tuk tuk driver came at them with a large piece of wood. He beat the elderly people, broke the arm of the brother, injured the legs of the sister in law. Everybody had to go to the hospital.

Police report made. No action taken. I would like to have contact with the Phuket Gazette to get a bigger reaction. Please pm me.

    This has to stop.

  9. From the airport, the metered taxis aren't worth it. For 100 Bt more you can ride in one of the airport "limousines". They are newer, cleaner and the air-con always works.

They are also, by far the worst drivers on the island. I don't hang about, but those guys will fly past you, lane weaving as they go. Don't get me wrong, constant lane changing and under taking, is unavoidable in Phuket, but the way they do it is reckless and dangerous to say the least, they think nothing of filling the gap in front of you that's only three feet bigger than their car is, all done at very high speed. Wouldn't let my family anywhere near them, that's for sure.

well, I find my driving is not so good too, WHEN I'M DRUNK !

  10. Hallo Karen Bravo,

maybe you rather should read my reply. So I ask again, does a German armpit smell differently from any other nations armpit?

off topic, my suggestion is to start a new thread "nationalities with the stinkiest armpits" or "nationalities that prefer not to use deodorants".

  11. Yes I was in there yesterday. No way did an AC explode, but it did melt because of the head.. Look like the fire started a the front desk. It was wood and look like it burned first. Initially i thought it might be an electrical fire, but most of the electrical was at the walls, so i double it. The gym may have had a candle or one of those insense burners with oil above that they left running and then it started a fire, but that is just a straight out guess. The place is a mess, but its not a total loss. The Equipment, while dirty, should still be cleanable and ok. But it will require a major cleanup work. If they started it today, then it would take at least a month to get it open again.

the place always smelled like a German armpit, maybe I'll go back now that it smells like smoke......

  12. I think for a lot of people an expensive Merc isn't particularly important. That's the whole point of leaving countries like England, where you need things like expensive cars to make you feel better about your miserable existence. I think a lot of people would rather ride a scooter to the beach or to a restaurant for breakfast than drive a Merc to work in the rain, which is what people are having to do in the UK, well after retirement age, to make ends meet.

It comes down to the over all quality of life, which for me is ten times better here than the UK, even if a few cut backs on luxury items have to be made. Well done to the OP for starting a positive thread for once. Thankfully the people who want to reply normally, out number the ones that want to be negative the first chance they get. They're the biggest thing wrong with this place

    good post WH

  13. this post is a little perplexing for me.............you don't have similar in Samui? Tough to believe.

Also, you live in Thailand (assumption as you say you drive from Samui) but you deal with tourist touts at the airport? Or your post is a commentary on the tourist touts?

  14. Thanks for the thoughts and advise. Due to time constraints, we canceled the Pi Pi hotel reservations. We will now look for something nearer to Phuket.

The sister is adventurous, wants to snorkel and kayak, and prefers a hotel resort near to a town/village so she can eat and experience local food and culture and not be restricted to a 'resort' type environment. Any suggestions?

    Thanks....

"local food and culture" Phuket style I would say, as not really Thailand as much as farangland here in Phuket.

Lots of places to stay in the Kata-Karon area, can rent kayaks at both beaches, snorkeling the (north?) end of Kata Beach, the rightside end if looking at the water.

Also, Rawai has some inexpensive accommodation options, longtail boats for rent at Rawai beach they can take you out for some snorkeling Coral island etc..

  15. Takes me typically two and half hours once off of Phuket.

From Phuket Airport to Saladan by car you'll never make in 2 1/2 hours

O.K. here is the official rundown which I did on Tuesday:

    @Chalong Circle 9:55AM

    Reached Sarasin Bridge 10:44

    50.4 kms in 49 minutes

Made the right turn to Krabi in Phangnga at 11:10

    40.2kms in 25 minutes

    Reached Krabi Airport at 12:13

    108.3kms in 63 minutes

Reached the first ferry booth at 12:57

    41.1kms in 44 minutes

    Reached Saladan town 1:36

    Summary:

Chalong Circle to the first ferry booth to Lanta 240kms 3hrs 2 minutes

Thems the facts, for the answer to your question of how late you can get from Krabi Airport to Lanta, I'm pretty sure the ferry stops at 10pm so i would think you could catch transportation no later than 8:30.

  16. Takes me typically two and half hours once off of Phuket.

From Phuket Airport to Saladan by car you'll never make in 2 1/2 hours

maybe you didn't read the post correctly, I said once off of Phuket to the pier.

Sure to saladan, you can possibly get hung up for hours in the ferry line.....

I do the trip once a month so am pretty clear on what I am talking about.

  17. The best is from Krabi. There are bus services from Krabi Airport for about 600 Baht. From Phuket it takes you about 4 hours by car or 2 hours by boat (pier to pier).

You must have bought your car from Fred Flintstone as it does not take four hours to get to the pier from Phuket. Takes me typically two and half hours once off of Phuket.

Spot on advice though for the bus from Krabi Airport.

  18. saw 30thb drafts at a new spot on Sai Yuan down a little from Don's
