  1. I have a booklet that came with my blood pressure machine. It lists a normal rate as 140 over 90, a borderline rate as 160 over 95 and Hypertension as anything above this. This is an old machine (around 1990). I know that at that time the health authorities in North America went by those rates, as far as I can figure Thailand still does. A friend of mine once suggested that the rates were lowered because of pressure from Big Pharma, they wanted to sell more drugs. I tend to agree with him.

I completely agree, crazy americans wants to medicate you even if you have 130 BP, they are brain washed by medical pharma.

I am happy I dont live in USA, otherwise I would probablybe on meds because my BP is not 120 / 80, but little higher

But now I hear it for the first time that borderline is 160, I always thought it is 140......but I applaude that, it is certain, that Thailand is not into pushing drugs so much

160 is not a borderline number! It is hypertension stage 2 at least, 140/90 is stage 1 and above 130/80 is borderline/ pre hypertension. Thailand follow the Europe guideline (ESC/ESH) recommendation as well as the JNC8 from America. As Sheryl said those committee who made the guideline are not board member of pharmaceutical company, perhaps if you can read for yourself and search on google to find the ESC/ESH and JNC guideline above and just read on the committee panel and research their name, you will find that all of them are teaching professor, ass professor cardiologist, endocrinologist, internist at the top hospital and uni from all over Europe and US. Those guys see their patients days in days out, they are the people who treating those who have stroke heart attack and all micro and macro vascular complication from HTN Diabetes and Dyslipidemia, they are tired of seeing people with complication and have been trying to find out the way to prevent it by using serval evidence based randomized control trials to sum up and conclude into a committee recommendation for doctor all over the world to use for the best of patients interest!

They do not sit on the button reading google and some other dodgy site and give harmful advise like many of you do on thaivisa. Unbelievable how people try to doctoring others with nothing else but false information.

Adults aged 60 or older should only take blood pressure medication if their blood pressure exceeds 150/90, which sets a higher bar for treatment than the current guideline of 140/90, according to the report, published online Dec. 18 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

    http://consumer.heal...ons-683160.html

After reviewing available evidence on the effects of blood pressure treatments, including adverse events, the Institute of Medicine’s Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC 8) concluded that aggressive treatment can lead to lightheadedness, falls and fainting in elderly populations — so they advised loosening the guidelines for starting medication.

I don't think the two quotes above are from dodgy sites. Are they?

Did I mention old people over 60?? No I did mention in general. And if you confident of providing a good information on this site there is no need to be defensive. Is there ???

  3. Crestor generic is now available in thailand but only in government hospital those pharmacy who carry them must have had a big connection with GPO to be able to sneak it out from the system.

According to many study (google if you want) rosuvastatin has least side effect on rhabdomyolysis compared to others , followe by atorvastatin. Simvastatin seems to be the worse on side effect. Having said that, it does not mean those who take simvastain always have problem, many of us here I am sure have been taking them for decades with no problem.

  4. Telling people to do things that you are not qualified to do is so wrong! You can advise herbs as supplement or encourage people to do exercise, suggest diet control, those do no harm. But telling people not to take medication for their high blood pressure because you are living in your own world and believe in your internet research without any medical qualification and evidence based medicine is sooooo wrong and dangerous. Would you take responsible for the OP's health if he had stroke or Heart attack, as a macrovascular complication from hypertension!

To the OP, medication can be obtained easily but how would you know which one you could take which one is contraindicated in your condition?

For example; patient with HTN and asthma should avoid beta blocker as it cause bronchoconstriction.

HTN with bad kidney should avoid ACEI/ARB as it worsen the kidney.

HTN with Proteinuria or diabetes should take ACEI/ ARB as it improves the Proteinuria and prevent the kidney in the long term, off course if your creatinine is over 2.5 and K is over 5.5 you should not be prescribed with this class of medication

These are compelling indication that the health care professional would give you a good advise on what to do best for your specific condition.

And it is so wrong to ask on a forum like this what meds to take for HTN unless you have already prescribed from home country and genuine looking for the generic equivalent then I apologize.

This vaccination is a strictly control one so only authorized government centers carry the vaccine.

  7. The sticky rice in bamboo ( kow laam) is great. I like the purple rice better. My wife still likes the ant eggs. First thing she gets when in country ( half time in Dallas TX and half in Warin).

Purple because of the beans in it.

  8. Another authentic Isan would be Jaew Hon แจ่วฮ้อน which is Isan hot pot. It's really tasty and full of flavor with plenty of local herb. Maybe ubonthai can give you coordinate.

Oh and not to miss the grilled sticky rice coated with eggs, ข้าวจี่,this can be found at local market especially in the morning it's a real taste of Isan. Actually it's a good breakfast for winter time when people in the village wake up in a chill early morning, they make fire to keep warm and then grill the sticky rice for the kids...old way in the village not easy to find nowadays

Keep us posted how you find the food and places the OP, it shall be a great thread for us all too.

  9. There is HIV antigen test that could be done easily and at reasonable price however it's not as accurate as Viral load(PCR), which is normally not recommended as screening test. If it is positive, you likely to have the disease, if negative it does not rule out the HIV 100% though as it takes time for the virus to multiply itself to certain amount to be tested. Let's say if the partner had full blown aids, means load of viruses in her body chance you have contracted the HIV is high and the antigen could be positive. On the other hand if she has no disease or has it under controlled, the antigen test is certainly negative for the first situation and the follow up antibody test will also be negative , for the second scenario you may have the negative antigen test in the beginning as the viral was too low to be detected but the antibody will be positive later on.

Test can be done Lab and hospital. I doubt it if the hospital would do it anonymous for you but it is confidential test as you know.

As the other poster said chance of heterosexual to contract disease from one sexual contact is quite very low so hope you are on the majority side. By the way there is PEP( post exposure prophylaxis) Treatment for non medical profession too but normally start the ARV within 72 hours.

    Good luck

  10. Why would you want the American dough type of thing in an Italian restaurant? Thin crust is the authentic and they should try to keep it that way. Anyway good input from all and we shall try it out soon.

And when you go visit the IL in the village you complain they have sh*t toilet and sit on the floor to eat.... Now I get the picture so clear.

Different people have different values. Suit yourself.

As hard as I try, I can't make a direct connection between Sinsod and a Thai-Toilet. But in case a "no return Sinsod" situation comes into play,, the OP keeping his money and possibly investing it in Beer-Chang appears as an alternative. (Avoiding never ending grief and aggravation with little reward for the OP.)

    Cheers.

Hahaha just read the post others moaning about eating on the floor and bad toilet when go to village make me thought of it. Anyway if anyone want to keep the money for their daily drink it's their problem not mine.

A typical presumption from one the rose-tinted glasses crowd.

PM me if you want to know how much I have spent taking care of my partner over the last 8 years - and what I have spent contributing to help the family make a decent sh!t house.

FYI you could buy them the best dining table in the world and they would still eat off the floor - so save your money on that one.

    Say 2 MB?

  15. l have been with my girl 4 years now. she want to marry. we have a baby boy 4 months old now. l love her very much. how much should l pay for marry her and give to parents. she stay home with family in isann.

    god help me

Yes Dave, you are into the glue.

Your sinsot is not necessary because your couple hood is time tested and your love for her and your baby is evident.

The poor women is just being badgered by her family to squeeze some more money out of you.

You have to man up NOW

They will never stop nagging her, yapping about some other gal of their acquaintance who has shown her love for family by blackmailing the farang husband.

They will also be asking her who she thinks will take care of her in her old age.

They will mix examples from both cultures to make their point.

    Ad nauseam.

Get her to tell them to get lost.

Unhappy in life?? poor input to the OP. Though the parents want the money from the OP, it's their tradition to get sinsod form a man marrying their daughter. FIY: even the previously married woman, to remarry there is also sinsod involve, a lot less of course. The Thais always pay sinsod as it's part of their culture I see only the cheap Charlie farang trying to get away with it? Who shall get lost?

  16. Yeah if you are a city type of guy it might be tough. I like to get out and about and do things. walk and have a lok around and meet some people and have a yarn. I dont mean bars and stuff every day.

I went out to the girlfriends village for 10 days and it was one of the most boring things I have done in Thailand.

No one spoke English and I dont speak thai much so that was that. internet was not much good and really there was nothing to do at all. Crap toilet, had to sit on the ground to eat, hot. you think it muight be quiet out there but noise all the time.

The girlfriend suggested later that we should build a house and live there near her family. I laughed so much it hurt my stomach. I felt bad I luaghed at her but it was funny she could even ask me. I pay most of the bills so we'll be staying the places I like,

I know some people like the village and maybe they were country boys or something but if you are used to the city life it is as boring as watching paint dry. You are 70 mate and you must know by now what type of life you want.

Why should locals speak English when you are in Thailand? You are living in Thailand and it surely is expected by foreigners that live in Australia to speak at least basic English.

Regarding you had to sit on the local toilet or you had to sit on the floor during eating. You could have just go to the local wat and borrow yourself a plastic chair for the 10 days you were at that village. Is money is not a problem for you you could have just bought for 100-150 Baht a cheap plastic chair.

I have been working in Bangkok over 20 years, KL 4 years and Singapore 2 years plus assignments in HCM City, Beijing, Shanghai, Jakarta and Dubai and I appreciate village life also of course I do have air-cons and all the likes I bought that can keep myself up to the life in a big city. I miss really nothing that a city can provide me here in a village. 16km away is a Tecso, 50km away I have my tops supermarket.

I wake up with the chickens and go sleep at 10pm. Internet could be quicker but then again 7.2Mb is not bad at all for village life.

I think the most important factor is if you partner (GF or wife) is a good match. If it is a good match and you have no stress coming from either your partner or her family life can be great.

A lot of you blokes down in issan land are very very sensitive it seems like.

Where did i say they have to speak English? Its their village they should speak what they want and i dont expect them to speak Englaish. Like i said i want to speak English with people and i dont get that in a village. im not going to struggle along in some issan language. As for foreigners in australia i dont care what they speak but if they want to come to me and ask something they'll have to speak english if they want my help.

the chair like i said I wouldnt want someone bringing a chair to my place saying your furniture is no good so i wouldnt do that to them. Thats how they eat but and i dont want to do it like that and i dont need to do it like that. It dont matter it was 10 days and i'd never live back in that village for more than a few days ever again.

its a very common mistake that a lot of guys like you make. Just because you live in thailand that doesnt mean you have to do everythign a thai person does.

Sounds ignorant to me: If you do suffer with their ways of eating /toilet. Buy a good set of dining table, build them a cheap standard toilet do you can be more comfortable and no it's not am insults, it depends on how you talk to them. They surely would appreciate your thoughtful, if it ever occurs.

I actually think it is amirable for those who help out the in law, what they can, not throwing money or spoil them but at least to give them some comfortable in life where normal human being deserved. It's a thought that count.

For the english bit you sound so self- centered man. What is wrong with. The Isaan language ?? What is wrong with thai bring spoken in LOS it's their culture try to understand and remember a few words life would be different. Off course when I go to Brisbane I have to speak English to the local and I am not an ignorant and fortunately I have ability to learn.

  18. Just feel pity and sorry for those old folks with their personal misfortune experiences, if you are man of your 60's trying to attract Girls on theirs 20's especially in bars and night life places what do you expect??? Decent partner?? Well it says it all on each of your post people. Though most Isaan people are poor, they are really nice and sincere compared to those in the big city and western world. There is ofF course a bunch of the bad ones like everywhere else on the planet but generally they are good heart. The money things is indeed part of their local/village culture that the parents get supported financially from theirs kids. Normally the young go work in BKK or big city, during the holiday they visit their families in the village and what they normally do is buy food get some drink and give their parents money ( as well as monthly pay). You may give them but make sure you give what you feel comfortable and tell the GF exactly what you capable of, If you are expecting a serious relationship, as to avoid over expectation from all of them. Provide them with a good meal is good as many other suggested. The food they love the most is likely to be seafood like grilled prawns, as Isaan is far from the sea and they don't have chance to eat it so Often though there are many more of seafood places nowadays, and those Mookrata hotspot type of thing is always good for the local party. Personally I think this is a good idea to do for her family as it will show you are grateful for the family letting you stay.

  19. I don't know the accu-x but normally the Roche brand accu check is quite widely used and sold with self calibrate stick on each box of the trip test. Pay a bit more and get decent one. I do believe They have guarantee for the glucometer machine itself that you can change it anytime if problem occurs (as the strip is bl**dy expensive)

  20. You have to be their patient though can not just get a prescription from anywhere to go buy ARV meds at hospital. The regimen they use at government hospital most likely to be 2 or 3 line drug as those are available locally made. The current first line recommendation up to date I do believe it's called Atripla, can be found as brand name and generic, which is not available at most gov hospital. You can try and find out for yourself.
