  1. But in actuality, he did the opposite. When in trouble, he turned to the people.

I respect you for being willing to stick to your opinion Kitsch, but just keep in mind, that is exactly what demagogues do. It doesn't mean you should respect them for it.

The unfortunate reality is democracies are useless when in the presence of a demagogue. I don't care how corrupt the guy was. There is lots of corruption in Thai politics, and there always will be. That is not why Takki had to go. The fact that he is a demagogue IS why he has to go.

Leaving a country to people like that gives rise to things like Hitler. I will forever disagree with your position, as much as I respect your right to be wrong. A coup was completely justified in this case, just as a coup would have been justified to remove Hitler before WWII.

No ideology or system of government is perfect. The military has a responsibility to protect the people from all enemies of the country, even if the enemy is the PM. I am glad the military did not shy away from their responsibilities.

Are you suggesting that the military has an obligation towards self-annihilation?

  2. When a Thai sells his vote, who is cheated? Nobody. When a popular political party is disbanded and disqualified for doing what its opponents were also doing, who is cheated? Everybody.

The comparison question could just as well have been answered: "He was declared a criminal by a kangaroo court set up by a totalitarian and undemocratic regime" - as was Mandela; as was Aung San Su Kyi.

Everybody knows that Taksin is a corrupt self-serving politician, but the way correspondents on TV queue up to support the Generals and their works is nothing short of sickening.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. When someone sells his vote, the whole nation is cheated. Depending on who is buying the vote, the voter is saying, "I don't care if this candidate will work for the good of the people and the nation, I'll help him win because he just gave me 4,000 baht. If I had a choice between massive vote buying or a responsible military coup, I'd swallow hard and pick the latter.

Good posts, and basically sums up the endless arguments on TV for years now. Some people favor military coups and some flawed democracy. To each his own, as far as we are concerned. As for Thailand, it's guns and money politics, as usual, which currently favors Abhisit's employer. As for the future, all things are impermanent.

  3. Many countries have found that as long as the courts negate the will of the people it really doesn't matter how elected officials technically get elected.

And many countries have found that rule of law will override the "will of the people". If the law is a good law, and correctly and impartially applied, long may that be the case.

The best laws that money can buy!

  4. I think you are on to something here. For a lot of us, we are living beyond our wildest dreams of a decade or two ago. We have found a new peace and a new happiness. We don't regret the past, nor do we wish to shut the door on it. Life is good, life is worth living, and we enjoy sharing with our relatively new found families.

  5. An M79 grenade fired into a crowd would do significantly more than injure five people, it would also make more than an 8cm hole in the ground.

I am going to guess your only perception of the M79 is from Hollywood movies.

Have to agree with TAWP here. When it comes to knowledge regarding explosives and grenades, the expertise is clearly in the PAD camp.

    A ridiculous statement.

BOTH ALL sides regardless of color or not, are filled with ex military,

since almost EVERY male in the country has mandatory military training and a term on the forces.

No one side has ANY exclusively greater expertise.

Agree there's plenty of ex and current military and mafia hitmen on all sides. I was referring to the excellent posts of PAD supporters here on TV who seem very knowledgeable when it comes to munitions and explosive devices.

  6. It is being reported that the police have said the explosion was caused by an M79 grenade.

  7. You don't need to go far with the TV audience to find people who at the least are indirectly linked to victims of attacks on the PAD.

Speaking of people not doing themselves favours, accusations that the PAD leaders would sabotage their own fellowship in order to increase it are frankly ridiculous.

I think your view is quite widely held among many of the "yellow" supporters. Amongst many of the neutral however, your unceasing belief in the integrity of the PAD leaders is seen as "starry-eyed" and "naive". On this forum, there is plenty of room for all to express their opinion.

  8. I think ths is Cambo's and Thaksin's equivalent to a public "mooning" of the Thai govt. His position may have little value, but it apparently has a big face value.

And many Thai citizens, perhaps the majority, even if they do not support Thaksin, are very happy to see the present Thai government face a public "mooning" as you put it. The disdain for the present government and those who back it goes far deeper than any Thaksin-No Thaksin debate.

  9. Interesting that there has been much speculation over the bomb and a sprinkling of the red concert things but there has to my knowledge been no analysis of what was said at the PAD rally or at the way it was slanted. Both were very interesting as were comments that attendees were not all natural PAD supporters. The date of the next PAD rally is also of interest.

Do we need a new thread or do we use this one for such comments?

Weren't the organizers of the Sanam Luang rally very clear that this was not a PAD rally?

    Was it or wasn't it?
