  1. Somebody stupid enough to do this probably was also wearing shorts and flip-flops too (and came in barefooted)........

    Call the fashion police!

If there is anything to call the fashion police for, it is these fat, facial haired, tattooed, simmet wearing, shorts wearing Farangs.

I am not fat. I shave my face. I have no tattoos. What is a simmet? (too lazy to google) I never wear shorts, not even at home!

    Yes I am a falang. w00t.gifcrazy.gif

Oh, I never go to Pattya!

  2. Thai doctors do not give prescriptions. Do not exist in the country. They only phone down to the pharmacy and you pick up your pills after paying your bill.

If you feel you must have documentation... you will have to get a letter from your doctor stating you are taking these meds as part of treatment... etc.

Unless you have a boatload of drugs, don't bother.

I will disagree with you, that doctors in Thailand do not write prescriptions.

In some circumstances I use medication that, in some countries, requires a doctors authorization to purchase. When in Thailand I have had doctors write a prescription that I take to a pharmacy. I keep that written prescription with me as proof that I posses the drug legally.

The prescription is not just a blank piece of paper the doctor writes on. It is on paperwork provided by the hospital the doctor is working at.

  3. Remember at the time there were a lot opposed, including many experts, to that dispersant as claimed it would make it worse, naturally they were ignored. No doubt whoever organised it will get a promotion and pay rise, seems the reward these days for stupidity, incompetence and fraud. Once you are in the club only good things come your way.

    Quote from the article:

"The dispersant, Corexit, is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for clean up following oil spills."

  4. The best way would be to send those who want to become English teachers abroad. They'll certainly come back with a very good command in English, plus an experience that Thailand isn't the only country on this planet.

A Thai colleague just recently told me that she wouldn't speak any more English when coming home. There're so many other ways to learn English, like watching movies, typing some nonsense at TVF etc....

I've realized that mostly kids at schools and teachers know about ASEAN, the majority of the "ordinary" folks don't even know what will happen soon.

We had an ASEAN camp at our school, some of them might remember the ten countries, that's it.

Just upgrading a school by calling it "World Class Standard School" doesn't really boost their English language ability.

Not too many Thais will go to any of the nine other member countries, but many of them will come to Thailand.

Can't see one good point for this country though.....wai2.gif

I learned my basic Thai language during the seven months I was in Thailand back in 1971-1972. This includes four months of Thai language class 2 nights a week at the military base outside of Udon Thanii. Thai language was taught at the base by a Thai woman.

I asked the Thai instructor how long she had studied the English language. She had a four year degree at universities in Thailand, followed by eight years advanced study in the United States.

While she still had a Thai accent, she is still the most learned Thai of the English language and the most fluent and literate in English of any Thai I have met. This includes my Thai family and their English language abilities.

She was making good money working for the University of Maryland, Far East Division teaching Thai and good money on the side teaching English to those that could afford to pay her the rates she was asking.

The eight years study in the United States is where she says she really learned to speak English, before that the English language she learned at Thai universities only enabled her to read and write it.

  5. In reply to the original post.....

Geez these Thai kids really need to learn how to shoot! Missed him twice?! Once as he lay in a hospital? Don't these kids have to do mandatory military time? Who teaches them marksmanship anyhow?

My ex brother in law (a decorated Thai Police Officer) cannot shoot worth beans either! At less than 15 feet (3 meters) he missed a target by 1-2 feet with his Smith and Wesson revolver. I thought the sights of his revolver were off. I asked if I could try. I missed the target by less than 1 inch (2.5cm) at the same distance. The target was a bottle cap. He later asked for shooting lessons!

The only song about masturbation to be played on Radio 1, and Top Of The Pops as i recall!

Not quite. I'm sure many of these weren't such smash hits, but then again it's just a list of some from the 80's.

  7. The article doesn't even mention the fact that Bangkok is built on a swamp and that liquefaction is most likely to occur if there is any decent sized quake in the area.

Exactly. The area of greatest damage in the last sizable San Francisco quake was down toward the bay on filled land where they said liquefaction had occured.

I have a house in Santa Cruz, the epicenter of that quake. It did some pretty major damage many miles away. At first I couldn't believe the epicenter was so close to me, with all the damage I saw up in the SF Bay area.

Are you two writing about the 1989 quake? I was in Livermore for that one.

  8. Really what is wrong with these people...

Nothing - its you - you're living in the wrong country.

Don't think so, whatever country I live in I am not going to let an animal bite me to placate others.

Are you saying you would let a dog bite you before you would kick it?

I've never been bitten by a dog, nor have I ever kicked one. Dogs are very perceptive, unlike many humans...

Regardless of how people treat or love their dogs, they descend from pack animals that are predators. Just watch the documentaries of wild dogs hunting prey. That is how our pets used to be! Heck look at the dog packs in Thailand!

If you run from some dogs or ride a bicycle past some dogs, they will chase and try to attack/bite you! I believe those dogs perception is, you run from them, you are prey!

As a 10 year old I lived on an Army Post in Texas. I rode my bicycle past a new neighbors apartment and their dog ran faster than I could ride, caught up with me and bit me in the leg! The Military Police investigated, i.e. they went looking for the dog. After several kids that were running or biking were bitten by that dog, the Military Police arrested the owner, a Staff Sargent. Just what perception did that dog have of the running and biking children that caused him to attack children? What do you think?

In 1979 when I was in the Sierra Mountains of Southern California I was spotted by a pack of domesticated dogs that had gone wild. Those dogs were either abandoned or lost by their owners that had traveled up into that remote area. There were 15-20 dogs of several breeds.

The dogs chased me up onto the top of my pickup truck. I was fortunate to have been preparing to do some target shooting and had my rifle laying just inside the window. By the time I was able to retrieve the rifle, one dog was on the boxes in the back of my truck. That was the first dog I shot. If I remember correctly, I killed three of the dogs before the pack ran off.

I reported this to the local Game Warden and he knew about the dogs. The dogs were chasing and attacking people for weeks before they found me!

Now what do you think those dogs perceptions were of me and the other people when they attacked them?

Now, how I feel about dogs. I would love to adopt a big, goofy, galoot, of a dog at an animal rescue shelter in Philadelphia. But I do not know when I will travel to Thailand or how long I will be there and I do not have anyone that I could leave "Clifford" with. My cats can be left with relatives who will take care of them. But, a big 105 pound dog? Nope, no one will want to take care of him!

  9. What next? GPS coordinates of every security detail, along with their radio frequencies? How about Obama's room number at the Hyatt? sad.png

The radios the Secret Service uses are frequency hoppers. Each time they transmit the hop sequence will be different. To compound that, the transmissions will be encrypted.

I cannot speak to the other issues you wrote about.

  10. But rather than dancing in traditional style, with its elegant arm movements...

I don't think this reporter has been to a mor lam concert before... lol

He's referencing "old school" mor lam.....

Agree wholeheartedly the modern mor lam you reference bears little resemblance to it.

Also, I doubt a 19 year-old is going to be that fervent a fan of the old style that he shoots people over it.

I also agree with others conveying the shooting had nothing to do with gangnam.

Even If there wasn't any gangnam being played, there could have just as easily been a disagreement over the preparation of som tam that led to a shoot-out.

That looks like the Thailand I knew back in 1972-1973. I liked that music. Still do.

  11. Here in the United States I worked at an office 3 1/2 drive away from my main home. I lived in an efficiency apartment when at the office.

I returned home unexpectedly one night, without calling ahead. I had one hell of a surprise. My Thai wife met me in the hallway with a loaded 12 gauge shotgun. Seems I did not hear her calling out, "Honey is that you?".

I never did find out if she was seeing anyone. I always called her before and never arrived unexpectedly after that night!

Sounds like she adapted to American culture rather well.

She had never handled a firearm before she married me and I taught her how to shoot. Even though her father was a Thai Police officer. (the only poor one that I met in Thailand by the way). She now owns 2 pistols, a rifle and a shotgun.

  13. Well, while it does appear that Obama has won, not all the votes have been counted.

I don't think that Hawaii has closed their polls yet, but if the state goes for Romney, then I would be very surprised.

I like to wait until all the electoral votes, not the popular votes, are counted.

I had hoped to work at the Republican and Democrat conventions, but retired two years ago instead.

  14. "Dimitrov was charged with entering the kingdom without a visa and Ritonov was charged with travelling in Thailand without a passport and visa."

As bad as the ATM crime is, how did these guys get into Thailand without passport and visas? That is scarier.

I used to know someone that traveled to Southeast Asia in the mid 1980's. When he was denied entry to Thailand from Malaysia, he walked back down the road 1/2 mile, walked into the jungle 1/2 mile and then back up into Thailand. It was easy he said.

He stayed in Thailand for several months, then went up into Burma and then on to India by land. No entry visa's for any country after Malaysia. He did have a passport.

  15. It is amazing who does not know about danger from carbon monoxide fumes. I used to be with the California Army National Guard, 3rd of the 40th Infantry Division ( 3/40th). There were a lot of M-113 armored personnel carriers in the 3/40th.

During one weekend training drill it was very cold for the time of year and many of the people in the unit did not have sleeping bags. Five guys slept in one of the carriers. The built in heater apparently did not work. A "gasoline fueled" portable cook stove was used to heat the M-113 they were in. They were all dead in the morning!

Some of us think that one of them got up during the night and lit the cook stove for heat. We could not believe that all five agreed to use the cook stove for heat.

  16. Yes, unfortunately for Haiti and the other Islands down in that area of the Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico, the islands are in the right place when an ill wind blows (no pun intended).

Sandy blew through here where I am in Pennsylvania too. Parts of New Jersey and New York are still devastated. I read that there were 109 deaths up here caused by Sandy. What I am not sure of is if those are deaths just in New Jersey alone or New Jersey and New York.

  17. Off topic to the crash, about the water tank on the pickup truck.

I am curious as to how much water the pickup truck driver would carry in his tank. I am guessing that the tank can hold between 300 to 500 gallons of water. At 8 lbs per gallon of water, that tank would weigh between 2,400 to 4,000 pounds! (1,091 to 1,818 kilos) if full.

That pickup looks like it would be rated for about a 1000 pound (1/2 ton) load. (455 kilo)

If I am correct, I would not like to be driving a vehicle in front of a pickup carrying that water load!

I used to drive a U.S. Army 2 1/2 ton truck to fill up a 500 gallon water tank trailer (we called it a water buffalo). There was a big difference in stopping ability when pulling that water buffalo. I almost ran off a road in a sharp turn and almost hit our parked 3/4 ton truck the first time I pulled a buffalo with 2 tons of water in it! I was almost standing on the brakes and all ten tires of the 2 1/2 ton truck and the tires of the water buffalo skidded 8 to 10 feet in the dirt before stopping two feet from the 3/4 ton truck!

That big Army truck is rated to carry a 5000 pound load (2,272 kilos) when driving cross country (off street) but has the ability to carry a 10000 pound load (4545 kilos) when driving on a street or highway, so the brakes are built to handle that kind of load.

Do any of you TV'ers in Thailand have any experience / knowledge of how much water a tank on a pick up truck of that size actually carries?
