  1. I tried the longan wood last night for a quick grill & smoke - the results were quite good so I'll try it on a long, slow cook next time. Coconut shells are on order from the mum-in-law so looking forward to trying them too.

Thanks again fo all the tips.

  2. I'm not a smoker, but have to congratulate on your receipt of the King of BBQ's. I f'ing love my Weber and use it several times a week.

Yep, I really enjoy using the Weber. I have the Performer Touch 'n Go which uses a gas canister to light the charcoal however the cans don't seem to be available here. I'm now trying to find some fittings locally to modify it and hook up to a regular cylinder but it's not a show stopper as I just use local lump charcoal to light the brickettes if I'm going to do a long cook.

Thanks to all for the local wood hints - the mother in law is bringing some lychee wood tomorrow.

  3. HomePro Hang Dong branch has (or had) the serious ones that run from a gas bottle and make major claims for reducing the local mosquito population within a few weeks. I seem to remember it was this brand that they stocked - you'll need deep pockets though....

My experience with the Black Hole non-ultra violet devices shows them to be pretty ineffective and very pricey for what they are. Can't fault their marketing.

Thanks Greenside, I have to agree with you re the Black Hole type. I think I'll try planting the mints and use the yellow bulbs for starters and see how it goes.

  4. Does anyone know where to buy a mozzie trap in CM - the type that emits CO2 to attract them?

Alternatively, any sensible suggestions on how to keep an outdoor area relatively mozzie free would be welcome.

  5. I don't know about CM but I recently has endoscopy and colonoscopy done at Bumrungrad in BKK . Nothing found so had a capsule endoscopy done the following day which spotted the problem - total cost was just under $3K, very professional and I can certainly recommend them. I'm booked in next week for follow up treatment [colonoscopy APC to zap the problem areas].

  6. I bought one there a few weeks ago - very helpful folksbut best if you have a thai speaker with you. Go past Tesco Lotus, take first left then left at the traffic lights. Take first right then next left then right. The shop is on the right hand side in the first soi on the right - lots of fish tanks outside. Any problem, PM me.

  7. Some time ago I read a post in TV that recommended a Bangkok pharmacy as the cheapest for prescription meds and who could supply to all areas in LOS by mail. However, despite many searches, I cannot find it!

Now that I have retired here in CM I need to find a reliable and cheap source for my various pills so would appreciate any advice on where to source them.

  8. An oversized A/C is pointless, it will cut off when the temperature has reached its setting, before the humidity, which is what causes the disconfort, has been removed.

Yes, a good point indeed and when you go to Siam TV/Homepro their calcs to determine the required BTU for the area work out around double that of US and Australian government websites - check out www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=roomac.pr_properly_sized

    Cheers

You did notice that energystar calculate in square feet. Also in general the US is a lot cooler than here in summer and thus we need larger here to maintain the same temperature.

Yep - did the calc to sqm. If you google it you will find other sites with similar calc results. Also, there is a thread somewhere here on TV that I read recently and many seem to be of the opinion that local calcs are well oversized. Bigger may not necessarily better in this case ;)

  10. Thanks for the replies. I'm prepared to accept some reduction in quality using co-ax as the house construction will not make it easy to run new cables and I don't want to use wireless.

Can anyone recommend a Chiang Mai source of digital modulators?

    Cheers

  11. I'm looking to install a multiroom TV & audio system using a HDMI digital modulator with IR control and signal going to the various rooms via existing co-ax cables. If anyone has done this, I'd appreciate some feedback and also if anyone knows of any potential suppliers in Chiang Mai or Bangkok.

  12. The UK government has issued a draft amandment to the QROPS regulations

    Quote:-

As part of the draft legislation there are four particularly significant proposed changes: -

    1. Those transferring their pensions to a QROPS will be required to sign an acknowledgment that they understand they may be subject to tax charges if QROPS rules are breached. This is likely to ensure that those considering a transfer will take best advice and work with reputable brokerages only.
    2. QROPS providers will be required to report to HMRC all payments made from pension funds for 10 years from the date the pension is transferred overseas. Currently this requirement only exists for the first 5 years following the QROPS holder leaving the UK. This should eradicate those QROPS that manipulate the system and pay out 100% lump sums etc.
    3. New conditions should mean that 70% of accumulated funds transferred would be used to provide an income in retirement – the whole purpose of any pension scheme surely!
    4. And finally, it is proposed that anyone with a QROPS located in a different country to the one in which they live and are tax resident will not be able to receive more tax relief than members resident in the nation where the QROPS is held.

For full details, here is the link to the article:

Harsh Changes to QROPS Proposed: It's the Industry's Own Fault

Regarding Thailand Tax laws, can anyone advise on how pension payments are viewed - are they classed as 'income', 'savings' or other earnings category?

There's a chance that item 4 above may get binned so let's hope.

    Cheers

  13. Jag I have a Shoei Syncrotec great helmet but found it to be a bit heavy, hot and tends to fog up in the rain and humidity in Thailand.:(

I purchased a new Nolan X801, great helmet, very light as it is made from the same material the F1 cars are made of, (Carbon Fiber) it has large vents in the mouth, and top front, it also had 2 flap vents on the top that open into the wind and that gives great ventillation. It also has an extractor sliding vent in the rear to accelerate the air flow. You can get it with tinted and clear visor, both visors are supplied with an anti fogging internal slip on lens, this fits flush on the inside of the visor. It is the same helmet that Casey Stoner wears in the MotoGP.

I wear good quality leather upper jacket and nylon pants, the jacket has Tungsten shoulder pads and arm and elbow pads. The pants are fitted with shin and knee pads. Touch wood never had a prang. I wear good quality bike boots.

If you go to the bike section on here I am sure they will have a list of shops that carry the gear.B)

Thanks Ozemade, I'll check out the Nolan.

Hadn't realised there was a biking forum here so I'll have a troll through it.

    Cheers
