  1. Field Marshal Prawit was CiC of the RTA for a year or so. He was also Defence Minister for P.M. Abhisit, and he was one of the major sponsors of the PDRC. I think he expected to be named Grand Poobah. He is the current Capo di tutti i capi of the Burapha Phayak faction, which is dominating the RTA and the Kingdom, much to the chagrin of the Wong Thewan faction. Hence Field Marshal Prayut's concern about "dark forces", aka a counter-coup.

They should learn to share, like they do with the two Buddhist sects alternating top monk.

  2. Clocks change this weekend....

There may be a second 01:00 game? maybe on 669? On-line schedule may be incomplete as of today?

  3. It looks there are Elders seated on either side of the young woman?

FWIW, she doesn't look embarrassed to me?

I think the LDS have a large-ish administrative facility on Petchaburi Road, a few steps from the SARL/Makassan.

They always seem pretty nice, I can usually recognize an Elder - obviously the name-tag is usually a giveaway, and chat them up just to talk about U.S. happenings - where they're from, sports, etc.

  4. When I called True inquiring a/b internet service in Kaengkhro District the "associate" practically laughed out loud, but told me "no service" there. Are they only interested in providing internet to cities/large towns?

Suspect you are confusing fixed-line internet (DSL/DOCSIS?FTTx) and True Online, with mobile data (3G/4G) and TrueMove H.

This article is about the latter, and given TrueMove H's expansion, you might be able to utilize it?

China Mobile took an 18% stake in TrueMove H so now they have the capital they need to expand. Excellent news.

Now if we could just get an 1800 MHz auction.

  5. I always recommend talking with neighbors as they are more likely to have a feel for what might be available in your exact location. Asking here, when most may be hundreds of Km away is probably less than useful.

Most ISPs now also offer service availability maps on their web-sites.

    TOT Wi-NET

    AIS AirNET

    TOT

    CAT

    3BB

    True Online

Scanning some speedtest aggregators I can only see results for TOT and True in Chantaburi.

  6. But is that not the area along the river that is prone to flooding and land slippage - sinking even?

DO NOT let this get in the way of being THE BIGGEST and obviously the HUB of every large erection!

I am fairly certain this G Land Super Tower will be built in the G Land development on Rama 9/Ratchadapisek behind the existing Central Rama 9 and "G" building (under construction); all part of a larger effort to brand a new CBD.

The design is pretty amazing, I think.

There was a long thread a week or so ago which contained some insight into the feasibility re: construction and economics.

  7. Depends. I was pre-paid for years but when DTAC offered a 50% discount on post-paid I switched; so I was able to save quite a bit of money by switching. I have not encountered any billing issues, always 533.93 baht/month.

As long as you use 50% - 75% of the minutes, post-paid probably saves money, but there are so many variables and every person has different requirements (usage, voice, data, budget), there may be no hard/fast rule.

If you don't make a lot of calls, it may make more sense to stick with pre-paid.

It is pretty easy to monitor your usage with all the various tools: web, mobile (Android), so you can avoid sticker shock.

  8. Maybe look in some Thai-GPS specific forums or social media; ask a Thai to help or grind through with translate. There are plenty of GPS add-on PoI kits, and I've seen some 7/11's in those. The other challenge is that they are opening probably a dozen new stores each week.

I'd guess that CP (CPall) have details for logistics purposes. In the 2013 CPall Annual Report they said they had 7,429 stores at the end of 2013.

  9. Give the phone away.

    Seriously, which apps?

Best guess: these are integrated into the Samsung flavor of Android, and thus cannot be deleted or removed, unless you hack the phone.

Once you hack the phone you can do pretty much anything you want.

These apps. are derisively referred to as "bloatware".

Some apps. are integral to Android itself, and thus cannot be uninstalled.

Cherish the things it can do, ignore the faults.

  10. If you never rooted or flashed a device.. don't start with your $500 phone.

Meh. Nexus devices are quite easy, simple, straight-forward to unlock the bootloader and root.

I think the newer devices: Nexus 6, Nexus 9 along with Android 5.0/L may require a slightly different process, but it's still simple, at least as I understand it.

I plan to update to 5.0 as soon as released factory images are available for Hammerhead; ~ Nov. 3?

    https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=de

FWIW, I would recommend ordering that phone ASAP as it will likely be sold out shortly. When I checked a few days all models were sold out, but maybe they found some black/16 GB units at the bottom of the pile of returns?

  11. why do you spend most of your time in the MRT?

Punctuation is a funny thing, probably not taught anymore? I spend most of my time in metro-Bangkok, and often travel on the subway. TrueMove H may have a wider deployment of LTE/2100?

You can use an automated tool to root the phone, easy-peasey, in case you find the normal process overly challenging.

    http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/

The D820 variant is better for the U.S., it has AWS (for T-Mo), and it doesn't have LTE/1800, which may get deployed here in the future, but that's not a deal-breaker.

  12. As long as the amount is valued at no more than 10,000 baht you will be fine. In fact, you may be able to even go up to 30,000 baht, with and add'l 20,000 in flight or on arrival. But no isues with your stated plans.

There are carry-on limits re: 100 ml/3.4 oz.

I make frequent trips to the U.S. and bring in many, many pounds of chocolate (it keeps fine in this thing called a refrigerator), skads of perfume/make-up/hand-bags, usually well over my 10,000 baht limit, but I've never been searched on arrival.

  13. I have a Nexus 4, from Google/USA, I also have a Nexus 5 (D821 variant, purchased from DTAC on large discount/promotion, came with a heavily discounted plan, also an extended warranty).

I immediately unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. But I am running stock FW (KTU84P). The phone is easy to un-root, and re-lock the bootloader.

Maybe check on XDA to see what apps, options, settings or even custom ROMs meet your privacy requirements? http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5

I get LTE (Band 1/2100) in nearly every location in metro-Bangkok, even the MRT, where I spend most of my time. Typically 17/10 Mbps.

I think the U.S. Play Store is pretty much sold out of N5's. Doubt the warranty from the U.S. would be honored by LG here, but review the warranty card to see who the warranty agent is.

  14. "Am I understanding correctly that the primary account assigned to an Android phone locks one into that account as far as geo-restrictions, unless you do a factory reset?"

Not sure? In my case I have reset my phones dozens of times and seem to be able to access geo-restricted apps.

I did read an article, but can't find it now, which mentioned that Google uses the billing address for the CC associated with your Play Store/Wallet account to determine "location" - this would seem to apply to my situation as I use a U.S.-based CC, but not sure what that means for people who choose not to associate a CC, say just planning on using free apps.

Maybe best to use a US CC? Or load up on apps. during your trip. And get a T-Mo SIM to use, and to spoof Google when you return. Obviously it is easy to side-load any app. I just side-loaded a bunch of new apps. like the updated Hangouts, which weren't auto-updating for me yet. I also like the updated version of the Play Store app.

  15. I got to play with these new models a few weeks ago on a quick trip back to the U.S.; Apple Store was mobbed, units seem nice.

I purchased a iPhone 6 for a friend here, and brought it back.

I am pretty sure they also had iPad Air 2's, but I didn't specifically look for/at that model. I think I will get one on my next trip (Christmas).

  16. True have a ton of double and triple play promotions on now...internet+tv, internet+tv+mobile

    http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-broadband/entry/2525

You'll have to grind through the various True websites, and/or visit a shop to potentially review and select an appropriate package. They have complete and thorough printed material on all these promotions in most shops.

In some cases, depending on what you like/need/want, these promotions can represent a significant savings.

  17. "Disconnects" typically mean an issue with the cabling, but perhaps you are using the word in a different context?

I would examine the modem/routers' UI/admin screens to see what might be happening: WAN disconnects, PPP session termination, loss of DNS server(s) etc., especially when you are experiencing problems.

Maybe look at pings and tracert to those sites which are giving you problems?

With TOT it could be any number of potential issues.

  18. Staggering amounts for Thai public officials. How did they accumulate these large sums of money while in public service.

For the most part, these are Good People who've accumulated their wealth either as a result of birth, or connections, or both.

    In the case of...

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul and her husband have assets totaling about Bt317.67 million, it said.

She was CEO of Toshiba Thailand (which was founded by her mother), while her husband is a Maj Gen in the Royal Thai Police.

Good People do not have to dirty themselves by accumulating wealth by potentially questionable means in the employ of the government, they do it the old-fashioned way.

  19. Like the “Sufficiency Economy”, no one person or group seems capable of even broadly defining what “reforms” are needed or even being considered. Yes, we hear that just about every facet of life in Thailand is in need of reform, but this is really just s smokescreen.

In essence, “reforms” for the NCPO/NRC/CDC and their sponsors, the amart, consist of one simple, over-riding goal: limit or fully restrict the ability of the majority to select a national government.

Since this cannot be discussed in public, for obvious reasons, it must be couched in both secrecy and double-speak.

Ultimately the Military will get 1/3 of the elected seats, the amart 1/3 and the serfs 1/3, while the upper house will be appointed by the Military, and made up of Good People.
