Thailand’s Military Government Votes ‘Yes’ On Forced Labor
A new U.N. treaty punishing perpetrators of forced labor passed Wednesday in a meeting of the 185 nations that comprise the International Labor Organization (ILO). While a handful of Gulf states abstained, only one nation voted against the measure to stop modern slavery: Thailand. The treaty requires signatory nations to identify and release victims of forced labor, provide them with access to compensation, and punish those who benefit from the underground trade, which produces $150 billion in illegal profits annually and enslaves an estimated 21 million people worldwide. In Thailand, forced labor underpins the seafood industry, which accounts for much of the country’s recent GDP growth. While human rights groups have drawn attention to the issue before, the Guardian exposed the scope of the problem in a profile of Thailand’s forced labor crisis published Tuesday.Up to 500,000 slaves are believed to be working within Thai borders, the majority of whom are migrants pressured into forced labor with threats of deportation, torture, or death. Enslaved laborers on Thai ships frequently report working 18-22 hour long days, and a 2009 report by the U.N. reveals that 59 percent have witnessed captains murder a fellow worker. The international outcry sparked by the findings prompted leading seafood retailers such as Walmart, Tesco and Costco to announce that they are making efforts to end forced labor. However, the firms also suggest they were previously aware of the problem, raising suspicions that forced labor in the seafood industry amounts to an open secret. -
You have my full sympathy. Before I married my first wife, I was very excited when she wrote that she only wanted it anally. It took me a year to realise that she couldn't spell.
Suspect this is the OP's issue. On their first date, she meant she'd have sex with him three times today, and he thought she meant every day.

why no door to door house sweeps overthere and put everybody with guns, bomb making facilities & drugs into custody ... the army has enough people to do it village by village, no ?
Yup. It's euphemistically referred to as "pacification". They did it in the South before, in the 1970's with the CSOC, but doubt they have the stomach for it now. Very nasty times, partly responsible for the issues today, but maybe easier to blame it on the Shinawatras.

While the Chinese continue to put a lot of pressure on Thailand to move forward with this long-envisioned (circa 1850's) project, they cannot overcome the "separation" argument.
Obviously Singapore, where this project is often couched in terms like "Doomsday", would have a lot to lose, so they continue to lobby against it.

He said city plan has not been defined clearly and has not been designed in squares as it should have been.
Oh snap. That's where we went wrong.
Seriously, there has been a long history of comprehensive city planning efforts for Bangkok, maybe as early as 1960. Not sure who was in charge then? Could have been the Military for all I know.

Can't we just make him PM
Too late, he already declared himself PM.
People like you complain about problems and then complain if someone tries to sort them out.Well I did not complain about Bangkok city planning efforts, and I have not complained about any efforts to improve Bangkok city planning efforts. That's all in your mind.
All I asked was "what has he - Prayuth - done", in this case, other than to "lambaste"? Essentially, he's the one doing the complaining.

and tour business acumen lies where?
You are not going to lower production costs overnight without a total re-haul of the entire rice farming 'business'.
And producing more of something, at a loss, is not any way to run a business.
In the short-term I might argue that it would be better to produce less, and offer incentives to growers to either not grow rice, for a season or two. Longer term, increased productivity will lead to fewer jobs, so you're going to need to create some sort of social safety net for those displaced.
"Whether another corrupt political party will offer it as a hugely expensive vote-buying scheme is beyond my control."Why is it beyond his control? He claims that he will reform/transform Thailand before there are any elections, and that Thai's do not yet have the "discipline" to participate in a Democracy. When his job is done everything will be perfect, just like the last ~ 12 times.
now they need to start smart thinking
So Thai farmers need to start thinking smart? This is an incredibly simplistic view, perhaps even more simplistic than herr General might spout off.
Most of the costs (seed, fertilizer, water, harvest, milling, storage, transport) are fixed per rai, there aren't a lot of variables save labor.

And maybe that's EXACTLY what's needed!
Yeah, but what good does it do when "Dad" has to return every 8 years to slap the kids around? They're never allowed to grow up.

Good to see Prayuth isn't puckering up to the old motherland. Unlike the former rulers who's genes hail from there.
Believe the "Chan" in the name is indicative of Chinese heritage/ancestry?
Not that it should make any difference, I think both Thaksin Shinawatra and Abhisit Vejjajiva are both ethnic Han.

"Whether it will be continued in the future is another matter"
Ask me tomorrow. MAgic 8 ball says,
Reply hazy try again
Ask again laterBetter not tell you nowCannot predict nowConcentrate and ask againNow we have to help farmers cut cost and increase production
So the solution to producing too much rice is to produce more? OK, that makes perfect sense, make up a loss by selling more.
Obviously cutting costs is a factor but not sure how achievable that is given the current farming structure, which may take decades to readjust from "Sufficiency" to "globally competitive".

Useless editorial meant to disparage the Voldemort administrations' obvious short-falls in the troubled South, hype the previous Junta's (failed) efforts and as its one, single recommendation;
"...an advisory committee should be created and tasked with selecting a team to work on a solution"
Form a committee to select a team, to come up with ideas that might be used. Brilliant.
Seriously, Thais despise outside help/influence (send cash only), and these types of conflicts are rarely resolved without outside assistance, so this new committee, if formed, will be less than useless.
Besides, the Military Junta is too busy putting down pesky citizens in the other seventy-two provinces to deal with this issue. Hand out all the cash, give free World Cup and leave this messy stuff for the next real political administration to deal with.

Virginia's 7th Congressional district is the very definition of a gerrymandered district (R + 10), what a nutty map.
http://ballotpedia.org/Virginia's_7th_Congressional_District_elections,_2014
It is interesting that both candidates for the general election in November, Dave Brat and Jack Trammell are both professors at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.
What’s more, a couple of polls of the 7th indicate that on some issues, it may be well to the left of the Republican Brat. A PPP poll of registered voters released Tuesday found that 72 percent supported comprehensive immigration reform including a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Even among self-identified Republicans, 70 percent back a path to citizenship and 58 percent consider reform “very important.” Brat’s primary campaign focused heavily on his opposition to “amnesty.”
Regarding immigration, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been extremely vocal and leading the pro-Immigration reform efforts for ~ 8 years, and he handily won his primary. Mr. Cantor, probably realized his errors too late, and did try to back-pedal in the two weeks leading up to the primary.

Solar flares.
Unexpected transmission difficulties.
In all honesty, they probably still do not have defined procedures for requesting blockages, so any Somchai, Prauyuth or Korn associated with the Junta can probably ring up any ISP, TV operator and demand an immediate shut-down, without checking with General Poobah, who is micromanaging everything.

How old are you?
How old is your wife?
What province do you live in?
How much money have you spent since meeting your wife, including the house and any other material goods?
On average, how many times did you make love with your wife, before marriage, in the months just after marriage and now?
Does your wife offer any explanations regarding her current lack of desire towards you?
Maybe consider building a new, larger "four-a-day" style house? Or downsize to the "not-gettin-any again" size - we call this a dog-house.

And that say you can't put a price on happiness.
Doubt the Junta will ever ultimately pay RS. The Admin. Court will make decision denying payment in 2022.

Thai army delegation visits China
(Reuters) - A delegation of Thai military commanders travelled to China on Wednesday for talks on regional security and joint training exercises amid Western unease over the Thai army's seizure of power in a coup last month.General Surasak Kanjanarat, deputy permanent secretary for defence, said the meeting was aimed at mapping out "future plans of action" with the Chinese army, one of its oldest regional allies. He did not elaborate on the plans. The bid by Thailand's military rulers to strengthen ties with China comes after Western powers, including old ally the United States, criticised the May 22 coup. The junta has said it has China's support. -
Not that the Judiciary here cares about the rule of law but as the Military Junta has disposed of the 2007 Constitution, the NBTC is technically no longer a 'legal' entity, see Article47.
Maybe time for new 'acronymed' organization to step in to the fray?

Elsewhere, in the MICT, the Ministry of internet censorship in Thailand as it is commonly called, bureaucrats are eager to please their new military bosses pushing forward plans for a single international internet gateway run by, hardly surprisingly, CAT and TOT so as to make monitoring and censorship easier. This plan, in fairness, started before the coup, but has found a second wind since.Sources have confirmed rumours that the MICT is at least in the vendor consultation phase of a total lock-down of the domestic internet. Under the plan, every Thai citizen will need to authenticate an internet log-on session with a smart ID card.Earlier reports said that every citizen will have at most 6 IP addresses allocated at any one time. Asked how foreigners can access the internet, the permanent secretary answered, “I have not thought of that yet,” one vendor said. The MICT is also pursuing the Chinese playbook and is working on what is often referred to as a Thai Facebook that would allow for easier identification of perpetrators who dare to not be happy, though plans for that seem less well developed as of now.

Can someone post a screenshot of these topup machines.
You kind of already did that, with your re-post of KittenKong's post/picture.
It's that orange machine, just to the left of what looks like a BBL ATM.
These support AIS, DTAC and TrueMOve H, essentially they have a SIM/phone inside (for all 3 providers) which front-ends the OTA top-up request.
I think you'll find these everywhere, typically used for small value pre-paid top-ups. Very simple to use

NBTC threatens DTAC over revelations govt ordered Facebook block
The background is that on May 28 that Facebook was unavailable in Thailand for around one hour. This was claimed to be because of technical issues and not that it was specifically blocked, but then mysteriously Facebook was then available again for all. Most people fell into line and modified previous statements to follow the official story that the problem was because of technical issues. However, Telenor, which owns DTAC (the 2nd largest mobile telephone operator in Thailand), revealed that the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) ordered the block. The Next Web has Telenor’s statement:Telenor Group can confirm that on Wednesday 28 May dtac received a notification at 15:00 local time from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission of Thailand to restrict access to Facebook temporarily. -
Thai junta holding the mother of all garage salesTue, 2014-06-10 10:03A couple of weeks into the coup and the intentions of the National Council for Peace and Order are now becoming clearer with the junta working hard at winning the hearts and minds of the people through their wallets. For farmers, the junta has arranged for long-delayed payouts for rice and has ordered a crackdown on loan sharks, while the middle class has seen food, fuel and income tax freezes or cuts. On the other extreme, investors are promised a wide menu of infrastructure projects to pick from ranging from water management to rail, but key of which for the telecom sector is the 900/1800-MHz auction pencilled in for August.Army commander and junta leader General Prayuth Chanocha also appointed himself as the chairman of the Board of Investment and has been busy courting Chinese investors while his minions hold happiness concerts and crackdown on sandwich-wielding protesters (do not ask).State-owned telco TOT corporation has announced it has written to the Junta asking for permission to participate in the spectrum auction.

How do I found out if AIS airnet or other wireless services are available at my place.
I know I could ask the companies, but my experience is that that info is unreliable.
Maybe talk with neighbors? Other than that I think you'll have to contact the various companies. I'd be surprised if they couldn't answer your availability questions?
We've done a few AIS AirNET installs, and the service is pretty decent.

The easiest, simplest most straight-forward solution is to use one of T-Mobile or AT&T's MVNOs.
Simple http://www.simplemobile.com/wps/portal/home/!ut/p/b1/04_Sj9Q1MjAyN7MwNLY00I_Qj8pLLMtMTyzJzM9LzAHxo8ziXQy8fI0DHT2MgjzMTQ08Azycg93N_Qz83Yz0w_WjwEoMcABHA30_j_zcVP3cKC8LACEOlS8!/dl4/d5/L2dBISEvZ0FBIS9nQSEh/
StraighTalk http://www.straighttalk.com/wps/portal/home
etc. http://www.androidheadlines.com/page/2
which make it bit easier than dealing directly with T-Mo or AT&T
You'll have GSM 1900 (voice and low-speed data) coverage in many locations, and 850 MHz/3G or 1900 MHz 3G.
$45 for 30 days unlimited voice/text/data and you'll be all set.

Can anyone say if their True internet is OK.
There have been many, many, many threads here on True DOCSIS (18 Mbps plan is delivered using that), so have a search/read. Most experiences are very positive. No monthly caps, although there may some hourly cap which you may be hard-pressed to exceed. Assuming you like TrueMove H, and have a compatible smartphone (850/2100 MHz 3G), then it might be good? iSmart 899, bundled into that promo (Sook 3x), is self-explanatory: 500 minutes, 3 GB 3G, free WiFi.

Care to explain this conclusion?
RS has 300,000 potentially angry customers, any/all may demand a refund.
They have not yet been paid by the NBTC/Junta, and it remains to be seen if/when they actually get paid, anything.
RS paid FIFA for the 2010 and 2014 WC broadcast rights in 2005.
Maybe the Junta should procure the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup broadcast rights now?
