  1. Still not sure why anyone gives a toss about the Titanic. Many more tragic accidents in the world larger than a ship going down. I blame Leo and Kate for all this nonsense.

Actually there are many reasons people have found this disaster interesting for 100 years now. First, it was the only luxury ship ever to go down on its maiden voyage. Second, it was the largest, most expensive ship ever built at that time. Third, it was declared "unsinkable" by the operator. Fourth, it was carrying many famous and wealthy people. Fifth, it was at the dawn of ship to shore radio which produced exciting news coverage.

While you are correct that there were many more tragic accidents, few have caught the attention of the world as did the Titanic. It was the last ship to go down from striking an iceberg.

  2. At least there will be a new building at some point. What an embarrassment the current building is. The Mecca of high tech and the escalators don't work and the elevators are slower than rocks.

When they did the build-out for the current building, they installed used escalators. I have never seen this in any other building! I didn't even know there was a market for used escalators. The whole building is a disgrace and a firetrap. If there were ever a serious fire, we can expect great loss of life.

I think it's been longer than 6 months the sign next to Foodland was erected, I wouldn't be surprised if the place is never built.

  3. I went there last night with two friends, We all ordered the same thing: burgers. We all thought they were quite good and will certainly be going back. The owner was quite accommodating and the staff very efficient. Unfortunately I can't speak for any of the other meals but it sounds like the food maybe uneven.

  4. Unfortunately, I also need the texts to be formated. So Notepad won't do.

Other people who have the same problem say that it's apparently printer related because they can print on some machines but not others.

But I still don't know if the error comes from a windows incompatibility or from the driver for the printer.

Neither company provides any fix or update concerning this problem on Windows 7.

    Did you try WordPad?

  5. Try copying your text to the clipboard then pasting it into another application and then print from the new application. Sometimes Notepad will work or perhaps Wordpad. I always have success with SnagIt, but you may not have that app.

  6. gk10002000, As a former Etrade customer and current Schwab customer, you are making wise choice.

Richsilver, Be sure to let TMB know what happened. That security guard I always felt was a little too friendly and I have had to ask him to step back so I could conduct my business.

Yes, I have experienced that as well. On a number of occasions, I have seen that guard going up to people using the ATM and trying to help them. I had to shoo him away once. But until now, it never to occurred to me he might be involved in something like this. Now I'm not sure.

I will talk to the bank after Songkran.

E-Trade used to be my primary bank as well before I switched to Schwab, but using their ATM card is no longer free here in Thailand. Schwab totally re-reimburses the 150 fees.

  7. I talked to the fraud rep from Schwab last night and she went ahead and credited my account for the full amount that was taken. Less than 48 hours after I reported the theft Schwab made it good. Excellent service in my book!

  8. Now you know how the Russians fund their long stays in Pattaya. Sounds like they had a card skimmer attached to the machine along with a camera to capture your pin. Your bank probably locked down the card after the two withdrawals in Russia. I guess it takes a few days to transmit your card information to Russia and make the cloned card. Was your card one of the new ones with a chip inside? The best thing you can do to protect yourself is continuing using an ATM in a branch, check the card slot and keyboard if it can be detached or looks weird and cover your hand when entering your pin so even you can't see it.

There was no card skimmer on the ATM. I use this machine all the time and I'm very careful to check for one. I always cover my hand when I enter my PIN, so even if they had a camera, my number could not be seen. The bank did not lock down the card until I notified them; they were not even aware of the Moscow transactions.

  9. Yesterday I logged into my Charles Schwab checking account in America only to discover there were two ATM transactions in Moscow on the 7th for $169 and $676 at two different ATMs.

I am very careful with my card. It was never out of my sight and lately I've only used it at the TMB branch in front of View Talay 2. The last use was April 4. Of course I notified Schwab immediately and they said they will begin a fraud investigation and I will not be responsible for the money. They canceled the card, but luckily, thanks to a posting on this forum, I had opened a second checking account and I simply transfered my balance (about $800) to it and am now using that ATM.

    My questions:

1). How on earth did they do it?

2). Why did they not continue to withdraw money (there was some $800 left in the account)?

3). Why did it take 3 days from my last use of the card for the fraud?

4). What can we do to protect ourselves in the future?

  10. Hi, i think you will find its a cross between the software update and the signal here. I phone 4's are designed to work on a minimum 3g network. The network here is more like 2.5g and has some blind spots. Both myself and my son and friends had the same problem. We did a hard reset on the phone upgraded to 5.1 software and it solved the problem. Signing up to a package for 3g GPRS a will also help. Our previous issue's are now history!

I'm pretty sure that 3G has nothing whatever to do with phone calls; it is only for Internet. You can completely turn off the 3G and make calls normally. As for the the software upgrade, I doubt that's causing the problem either. I follow the Apple forums and have never seen anything about the software upgrade causing the problem you referred to.

  11. Don't know about Kindle, but B2S has an app for the iPad/iPhone with loads of thai ebooks and magazines. It's brilliant. AIS has an ebook app to available for all....and several Thai magazines have apps for iOS.

Thanks for the tip. I just installed the B2S app on my iPad and it looks very helpful indeed for reading practice.

  12. An upgrade became available yesterday (free for existing users). It increased the vocabulary from 100,000 words to 150,000! and added some other new features. It's a nice improvement. I downloaded it to my iPad and iPhone and they both work well.

I certainly agree with all the reviewers. I've been studying Thai now for about 20 years and this is the very best dictionary I've worked with.

  13. Tonight I did something I had been planning for quite some time: I ordered a pastrami sandwich to be delivered to my condo.

The one time I visited the restaurant, I loved the pastrami, but hated almost everything else about the place, including the not very exciting bread and the mediocre side dishes. So...

I prepared my own potato salad and bought a loaf of pain de campagne bread by Delices de France (available at FoodMart, Villa, Best and some other markets around town for 55 baht). While this is not rye bread, it is very good and stands up quite well to the pastrami (unlike the spongy bread they provide).

The sandwich was delivered in less than a half hour, properly wrapped (no delivery charge).

As a pastrami lover from way back, I was in heaven!

I know this is probably more effort than most people are willing to spend for a good sandwich, but for me it was well worth it.

  14. Had dinner there again last night with a friend and I can report that the service was much improved over the last time. There was a delightful young man who waited on us. His English was perfect and there was not a glitch in the entire process. The food was hot and delicious (and prompt!).

    Try it, you'll like it!

  15. Had lunch there today with a friend. Very slow service. Food was fine, but his lunch took over a half hour to come. He was completely finished before mine came out. The place was not crowded. I saw some friends there at another table and they said their food took 45 minutes.

The wait staff looked quite clueless, running around asking each other questions about every other thing. It sure looked like they had never been trained and they seemed quite perplexed with the computers. My friend's bill was wrong, but they promptly corrected it.

They have been opened about a week now and it seems to me they should be doing better than this. We were all greatly looking forward to their opening and I sincerely hope they do better.

  16. I don't think so:

    ผมจะไม่มาชายหาดอีกสองวัน(ต่อไป)

Doesn't this mean "I will not come to the beach in two days"?

    อีกสองวันผมมาอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

Doesn't this mean "In two days I will come to the beach one more time"?

Next two days = Ma Ruen Nee - มะรืนนี้

Doesn't this mean "The day after tomorrow"?
