Governor steps in after girl, 15, claims she was raped by 40 men

Residents concerned allegations damage Phang Nga’s reputation

POLICE have pledged to further investigate a gang-rape case after a teenage victim finally spoke up, saying there had been more than 40 perpetrators.

The sexual attacks allegedly took place in Phang Nga province between May and December last year. But the mother of the victim, who is now 15, said the girl had kept silent for so long because she was afraid of the consequences for her reputation and the safety of her family.

Police deputy spokesman Pol Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen said yesterday that investigators at Kok Kloi Police Station had sent the victim to a hospital for examination.

“Officials from the Social Development and Human Security Ministry will join the interrogation,” he added.

Krissana said police would also look into whether the case could be considered as human trafficking, as the victim claimed she had also seen other girls being raped.

According to the girl’s mother, a man broke into her house last year and raped her daughter. Days later, the same man and another man returned and allegedly gang-raped the girl.

These incidents were repeated, escalating to the point where the girl was forced on several occasions to go to huts where she was drugged and raped by many other men. Because of the frequency of the attacks, it is believed that more than 40 rapists were involved.

“Because I and my husband work as rubber tappers, we must leave our children alone between midnight and dawn,” the 39-year-old mother said.

She said she started noticing that her daughter acted strangely early this year. The mother initially suspected that her daughter’s behaviour might be linked to her use of a mobile phone, which she confiscated.

However, the mother soon discovered that the girl was also frightened at night. After questioning by her mother, the girl began to reveal her ordeal, beginning with the first rape. The mother then took the girl to a police station to file a complaint against the first three accused.

Officials from the Social Development and Human Security Ministry helped the victim’s family relocate. After that, the victim began to divulge more information, and said she had seen other girls being abused in the same manner at the huts she had been taken to.

Chanon Abdullah from the Muslims for Peace Foundation said arrest warrants had already been issued for the first three suspects named by the victim.

Kokkloi Police Station superintendent Pol Colonel Satit Prom-utai said at the time of the alleged crimes, the victim was younger than 15.

“Her interrogations will be conducted by a multidisciplinary team only,” he said.

Phang Nga Governor Pakapong Tawipat has also asked the province’s police chief Pol Maj-General Boontawee Toraksa to have the case transferred from the Kokkloi Police Station to the province’s police headquarters instead. While several agencies have come forward to help the young victim, many local residents in Koh Raed Village, where the sexual attacks allegedly took place, have expressed dissatisfaction.

“Officials should identify all 40 suspects to clear any lingering doubts,” a resident said. “Or else, the reputation of our village will be ruined. Since this case was first reported, no tourists have come to our area.”

Pakapong admitted that local residents had demanded that government agencies provide clarification in the case because they felt their village’s reputation had been damaged.

“I have set up a committee to find out the truth about the case,” the governor said.

He added that he had also instructed police to investigate the case.

I certainly hope those 40 muslim deviates are caught and punished quickly.

The mother has failed miserably to protect her daughter. Why the heck didn't she go straight to the police after the first incident when the man broke into the house ... ?  if she didn't know about it  or was she reluctant to do anything and then it spiraled out of control  ?

We must? Sorry not good enough! You let your daughter down.

As for the 40 men, dirty scum.

a stupid statement it seems you must have had a cushy life, rubber tapping is a arduous job has to be done when cooler and maybe for this family thats the only job that put food on the table and pays the bills, this is Thailand, maybe if there were any police patrols in the area then this type of despicable  crime would be harder to commit.don't blame the parents

They all have hidden agenda.

They learn quickly how to manipulate  system as in Australia  it is epidemic  event....

Problem is that any woman can accuse  man without any responsibility but man must prove innocence and pay lawyers fortune which after being  winner never will be compensated.

They would be right about that

40 plus families reputation....the villages reputation... the provinces reputation... the countries reputation

poor girl.... worse... girls, as this victim claims to have witnessed other rapes, during her ordeal.

In the end, an investigation will "prove" nothing happened except for possible consensual sex.  "A Thai could never do this!"

I was told once by a very affluent Thai lady that a Thai man that worked in her office with her for 15 years "Was not Thai, He is Muslim!!"  I was surprised, then I find out this attitude is prevelant throughout the mid-section of Thailand.   I don't see much justice being done for this poor girl as the region is predominately Muslim, and to keep the peace and 'preserve the reputation of the town' she will be ruled against, or she will disappear.

Try leaving a kid alone all night in the Real World and see what happens. The kid would be taken into care and the parents fined or jailed. It's called being a responsible parent. If you can't afford a kid then don't have any. That's called being a responsible adult.

True...well she hasnt been stoned to death yet so possibly she isnt.

But its certainly a 'cultural' trait of the religion of peace vis a vis the quasi condoned muslim grooming rapist gangs of the UK

The girl was 14 years old, not 5. Unless she is retarded, she is mature enough to sleep in her room for the night while her parents work.

Reading your posts on the other thread, it is clear you think the girl is not telling the truth.

Shame on you.

Life aint always easy. You may have lived a charmed and sheltered life. Many have not and do not. Many just do the best they can.

So, like in other topics I've noticed your replies, Give It  A Rest with your Western Ideals. These are rubber tappers out in the sticks in the middle of the boondocks trying to earn a legitimate wage in a difficult environment. And perhaps they are trying to be the best parents they can be. It aint their fault that some nutters/peodo's have had a go on their own daughter.

Dropping your expectation of standards is a very slippery slope which can lead to accepting that lower level as the norm. Which, of course, is what makes Thailand so appealing to a certain segment of western society. They don't have to try too hard when they move to Thailand. And this abuse, raping and drugging, went on for months, over half a year up until December, and the parents noticed nothing until early this year. I find that very hard to believe.

Nothing to do with dropping standards. It is what it is.

Have a go being a rubber tapper and get back to me. Have a go being on 350 baht a day, no bank account, no Fortuner, and having to get your 2 kids 8 kms to school and your only transport is a 10 y/o Wave and get back to me.

I've employed husband/wife rubber tapper teams for 7 years now. Their initial working hours are 1.00 am to 6.am weather conditions permitting, guess who takes care of the kids? Come back home at 6 in the morning, get the kids ready for school, eat breakfast and then go back onto the plantation to finish what they started. That's hard work, awkward hours. Now, what's your alternative? Should have got a better education and a job in the office in the city?

Meanwhile, in the "Real World"....

I'm not denying it's hard work. I'm saying it is incompatible with having kids who must then be left alone all night. There are other jobs that don't require working through the night. Most people find them. You appear to think it is okay to leave kids alone at night so we'll have to agree to disagree on that. But obviously, as this case demonstrates, it isn't.

Other jobs don't pay what a good tapper can earn. Nov, Dec, Jan when the weather cools, a husband/wife tapper team can earn 40-50k p/m, even at current shItty prices.

And that is a 9 day fortnight. Not a 6 day week.

So, money above child safety then. I'm guessing you must have been living in Thailand for quite a while as you appear to have accepted some of the habits of the locals as normal.

Give it a rest will ya and get off your high horse.

People have gotta do what they gotta do to earn a legitimate wage. Nov -Jan savings set them up for the rest of the (less productive) year. Generally, kids are fine in a village environment with relatives close by. In this particular case, the girl wasn't. It is, thankfully, a rarity.
