A large amount of weapons and some loan contracts were seized during a raid by police, army and administrative officials on a snooker club in Phang Nga’s Muang district on Wednesday.

Provincial police chief Pol Maj General Boonthawee Toraksa led the team to search the club in Tambon Tham Nam Phud, which belonged to Piyawat Khanpakdee, 35.

Officers found four shotguns, eight pistols and 374 rounds of ammunition, as well as some loan contracts. Piyawat was charged with having guns and ammunition in his possession without permission and operating a loan service charging an illegal interest rate.

Piyawat claimed that five of the guns were his and he had licences to keep them for use in sport, while the other guns were pawned to him by owners.

Not sure what hoops Thais have to go through to obtain guns and permits, but the only thing that sounds illegal are the interest rates.

If he took the guns as surety for his loans, I doubt he had permits for them. Not his lucky day.

Is that actually illegal to take such property as collateral, setting aside the illegal interest rates ?  What does Thai law state as to what can actually be held as "collateral".   He was not selling it and it was not used in the commission of a crime or in self defense.  It laid dormant.  Sounds like if he had just charged a legal interest rate, there would be no case.

Loan contracts might kill you fast and easy here, therefore the guns, it's in the operative logic of the business...

We warned you 3 times, you didn't pay up, your dog died, now there goes your kneecap, and we come back to your home next week and shoot the first female we see in the head, understand?

Nice guys those loansharks, sometimes their 'staff' doesn't even care about taking off their uniform, well, as these use their service weapon anyway, why would they...?
