The Revenue Department has sent its officials to meet professional football players and all football clubs throughout the country to tell them that, as income earners, they are required by the law to pay tax, department chief Prasong Poontaneat said.

Mr Prasong said he has given the policy for revenue officials to go out to educate professional football players and their clubs how to properly file their tax payments since football tournaments are now big businesses with large amounts of money in circulation.

Professional football players are highly paid, some of them taking a monthly pay in hundreds of thousand baht.

Therefore, the Revenue Department wants both the players and their clubs to understand that they are required by the law to pay tax.

Well, duh.....

Ha ha ha! Is this serious?

Isn't one of the definitions of 'professional' a person who gets paid to do something as their main occupation? Not a hobby.

I guess this is why politicians don't pay taxes properly. Get taxed less for their sheer unprofessionalism.

How could they not know this?

I thought they were automatically included in the tax system once they were issued with their work permit.

No, you have to apply for a tax id at the revenue department.

Work permit = Labor office

So are we to assume all small businesses, whatever amount that refers to, doesnt need to pay taxes?

Swear to god some of these people should be paid by intelligence per month and not by status/salary/corruption.

They are like the millions of other Thais who avoid paying tax by one means or another.

I read some time ago that only 24% of the population contribute through the tax system.
