Kamala beach vendors set to face the music

PHUKET:-- The Deputy Chief Executive of the Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organisation, Mr Nopporn Karuna, has today (Nov 3) confirmed that he will call in all beach vendors operating at Kamala Beach over the legal and illegal aspects of their operations.

Mr Nopporn has said that all the vendors, including jet-ski operators, masseuses and restaurant owners will be called in at the same time within the next two weeks after The Phuket News received photos from a reader of makeshift restaurants being set up on Kamala Beach and advised him of the situation.

It also follows Mr Nopporn telling The Phuket News last Tuesday (Oct 24) that he would call in jet-ski operators “after the Royal Cremation ceremonies”, after receiving complaints of many jet-skis being parked in public areas.

"Mr Nopporn has said that all the vendors, including jet-ski operators, masseuses and restaurant owners will be called in at the same time within the next two weeks after The Phuket News received photos from a reader of makeshift restaurants being set up on Kamala Beach and advised him of the situation."

So this would imply that the administrators responsible for the beach have no idea of what's happening at the beach on an ongoing basis unless someone from the public alerts them? Authorities popping down to the beach once in a while isn't an option?

"We have spoken to them before about the issue of OrBorTor regulations on public parking, but, it seems like they don’t want to follow the rules. We must figure out this issue with them promptly."

"With" them? Who's in charge here, the government or the jetski operators? (rhetorical question)

"If we tell them to go, they will simply return after a while."

They won't return if you apply a fitting punishment for ignoring the rules, such as a heavy fine, confiscation of equipment and maybe a few days in the monkey house. Make it economically unfeasible to continue operating at the Kamala's beach if they get caught and they'll move on to somewhere else.

maybe just a crackpot idea, but how about the or-bor-tor erect a few tents , huts and rent them out to the vendors , and only in them places will anyone be allowed to operate on the sand....some official coming every week to colect the rent and check on the vendors....any abuse of these rules and strict penalties and a ban from operating there... also any vendors must clean the pathways along the muslim graveyard wall side for customers to walk along  instead of trudging through thick sand, branches and litter..just coming into the high season and the parasites have crawled out and claiming their spots with no care about the law..about time they were made to respect the law..There's 1 million laws us foreigners must go by to be here, so how about making these people follow the rules too??  the 10 % rules in place are suddenly 70% taken over..   It is nice to see a few little places offering refreshments, massage, food etc, but there is no need for so many..but you know what they are like, 1 empty spot and these people will claim it as if theirs..

If the beach chair issue is anything to go by , and beach chairs are back in numbers on Kamala Beach  btw , why would the Thai  public ever take any government edict seriously?

It would have to have been at least ten times the authorities flip flopped on that one issue , and anyone who knows the current ruling on this particular beach , noting that  across the country every beach now appears to have its own rules ,  well ,  they would need a degree in research..

The fact that the official responsible for buildings squatting on what is essentially crown land only acts when complained to , speaks oodles about Middle Management over here.

What I really dont get is that if  'face' is an important aspect of Thai culture , then what could contribute more to a loss of 'face'  of high officials than the public totally ignoring the rulings made by those officials ??

This is where your idea does not work. This official will be paid off and allow expansion, infringement, whatever.

How do you think the Phuket beaches all got commercialised .... corrupt local officials.

The Kamala Orbortor was renting these places. That was an expensive position and he needs a better return than he's been getting.

They simply can not let the OrborTor run the show here. It's not in his interest to restrict or manage anything. He has to be told what to do. There needs to be inspections. You should see the chaos at the south end of the beach at 5PM. The taxis are all parked at the south entrance to the beach while they're trying to pull jetskis out. It's chaos.

Two hundred meters of empty plastic beach chairs as the vendors claim ownership to prime beach area. The jetskis continue to own the beach. Parasailing landing into highly crowded areas. Trash everywhere.

Poor management of everything at Kamala. And don't get me started about the dozens of wedding photogs operating there. The newest thing is horse rides.

It never stops. They can't give any power to these local OrBorTors.

One positive is they have finally removed most of the incredibly dangerous barbed wire that surrounded the beach. Still plenty of it left there but at least it's better.

There has to be zero tolerance- as we see time and time again be a bit flexible and people take the piss.

Give them an inch and they'll take the beach. Don't give them that inch in the first place until they learn (which they won't).

Photography is an exclusively Thai profession.

Great by Mr Nopporn but this it`s his work to take a grip on Kamala and cleans the mess up. Hope they can do the same on Kata beach also. Jet-ski on the sand all day long, and along the road which again takes up lots of parking spaces and the sale of Alcohol. And now there are more and more sun loungers for each day on Kata. The police are watching every day but nothing is happening only take a smoke whit them and runs off (Very Very good friends) there's a good pocket money to someone? And according to the rules, all jet-ski and boats most be in the water before 10.00 o'clock in the morning and NOT parking on the sand, and every contrast most be writing on the Jet-Ski in the water if you are stupid to rent one, and NO gasoline filling, and under NO circumstances any driving with any motorized vehicle on the beach between 10.00 and 16.00. And they drive with tractors and motorbike fore take jet-skis and Boat`s between 11 and 12.30 on the beach and chase away tourists and kids from where this mafia driving on the sand on Kata Beach. (NO RECPECT AT ALL FORE THE TOURIST) Phuket News have many many picture we send to them the last 4 weeks. And see and get rid of all those vendors some selling fake sun glasses and watches on the Kata beach and Karon beach. These are not Thai but from Laos and Cambodia and Myamar, and they have to pay "fines" for this office under the football pitch at Karon Beach "Kata and Karon Municipal Police".

Don't forget about the taxis and tuk-tuks that park in that same public area at south end ramp.

Like that will ever happen.

And yeah, I agree those wedding pic parades have gotten very annoying.

Someone is getting backhanders.  They are not Thais doing that business.
