I have friend that will be in Siem Reap for awhile & I thought I would drive down to visit. By looking at the map, the best place for me to cross would be Chong Chom and directly south to Siem Reip.

 

I know that this past summer, LOS closed ALL border crossings, but I am sure that has been resolved, by now.

 

I am asking for specifics of anyone that has driven across the border in the last month or so, preferably through the Chong Chom crossing, if possible. I already have the purple truck passport, but am unsure what else I will need.  I did find a thread that addressed these issues in this forum, but it is 2 years old. So...looking for up to date information.

 

Truck book - check, purple passport book - check, Valid Thai drivers lic - check, Thai insurance - check, re-entry permit - check, US Dollars - check,

 

Insurance for Cambodia?

 

Cam. or Intl drivers license?

 

Daily fee?

 

Anything else I didn't mention?

traveling thru at Osmach is no problem,  Car Passport is ONLY used to travel to Laos.

Your thai insurance is worthless

Make sure you get the Thai temp export paper and sign the book

What i do when i enter Cambodia, is take off my front license plate as sometimes the police in town will stop you if they see a thai plate cause they know they can get some $$ off you. Bus once you pass them , they wont chase you  :-)

Drive safe and dont drive at night

Border to sr is only about 3 hours

BUT better, head south  and at Samrong turn right and visit Banteay Chhmer, a great temple complex (  $5 admission) and most likely u will have the place to urselve.

Leave surin at 8 am- visit the temple and still be in sr by 4 pm

You mentioned to cross at Osmach. I don't see that on any Thai or Cam. map.

 

There are 2 crossings called Chong Chom on the thai map - one at Hwy 214 & one at Hwy 2201. Is one of those the one you are referring too?

O'Smach is indeed not labeled but you can find it on Google maps.

It's the Chong Chom crossing south from Thai highway 214:

Osmach is in Cambodia ....turn off of 214

2201 south is Anlong vang ( where Pol Pot is resting)

Have you ever passed through Chong sa Ngam?

 

It used to be a better road than OSmach and there was a delightful restaurant on the left somewhere around Kbal Spean?... can also take in Bateay Saray en route to SR.

Hello, have you crossed Cambodia borders lately ? I have read report saying that it is not possible anymore at Kohkong border ?

Yes, my broker always points out that Thai insurance stops at the border.

 

But I often wonder about the insurance that they seem to sell on the far sides of the land borders you can actually drive across (Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia.) What does it cover? Does it actually pay out in case of a claim?

As I was only going to go for 2 or 3 days, I've decided to bag it & stay home. Way to much trouble for a few days away.

 

A question does come to mind, not that it matters, but I'm curious.

The purple International Transport Permit - the last page, or back cover, says "This permit allows vehicle registered in the Kingdom of Thailand to be used in international traffic."

 

Nowhere i n this book does it say it is good for only Laos, or another country & nowhere does it say it excludes transit to Cambodia. So why is it "ONLY used to travel to Laos?"

i have one,  its ONLY asked for in Laos at the border ( needs to be stamped in and out)
for Malaysia u need a paper that is a translation of ur green book
