Major center against illegal call centers setup by AMLO and other organizations

BANGKOK, 16 November 2017 (NNT) – The Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) has joined hands with 36 commercial banks and 5 phone service providers to tackle illegal call centers with a coordination center to be set up to concretely deal with the issue.

The center is being established between AMLO, the Department of Special Investigations (DSI), Crime Suppression Division police, 36 commercial banks, the Credit Card Association of Thailand, the National Broadcast and Telecommunications Commission and phone service providers AIS, DTAC, True, CAT and TOT.

Interim Secretary-General of AMLO Pol Maj Gen Romsit Weeriyasan explained that the center will focus on monitoring against illegal call centers in an effort to obstruct them from harming the public. Its first task will be inspecting suspicious accounts at the 36 participating banks with the DSI poised to take action if any illicit activity is uncovered.

Between 2013 and 2017, a total 149 complaints were filed with AMLO totaling damages of 61 million baht. Combined with complaints filed to other agencies, over 100 million baht was taken from call center victims.

Citizens swindled by call center criminals are urged to call 1710 as soon as possible so that any transactions may be cancelled or the money trail may be followed.
