Police, health officials and military personnel arrested a woman in a raid of an illegal dental clinic operating in the guise of a grocery in Muang district of Trang province on Saturday.

The woman, identified as Mrs Payom “Jeh Lek” Jaiyai, 51, reportedly told the officials that she learned the technique of orthodontic treatment of dental braces on the internet and has been operating the clinic for five years.

The combined team of police from the consumer’s protection unit, provincial health officials and military personnel raided the grocery on Phatthalung road, Tambon Tabtiang, after they found out that it was a front for an illegal dental clinic.

Illegal taxi and tour operators, bars and hotels, clinics, casinos, illegal fishing, deforestation, land-grab, fake cops and military. Isn't it good to know there is a complete legitimate government as a tower of strength, taking care of all this and bring happiness to the people?

I think this may be more along the lines of selling fake braces for fashion (Yes its a thing), not much to do with a fake orthodontic clinic. I noticed a stall at Thesapit markets in pattaya selling fake braces the other night.

Sadly this is only the tip of the iceberg. There are so many unlicensed clinics in this country, or licensed clinics using untrained or unlicensed workers that it is a real threat to public safety. Add to this the fact that one can get a mail order degree so easily, or pay for a degree here in Thailand and you really have the conditions for disaster. And what is the Health Ministry doing? Next to nothing unless there is a public outcry over a specific incident or if the Clinic doesn’t take care of the police widows and orphans’ fund. And the fine, when they do catch you, is so minuscule that it pays to break the law. That’s the real issue in Thailand, wrist slaps for punishment instead of significant punishments designed to prevent breaking the law. If this person knew she would have to pay 2,000,000 Bt fine for practicing without a license, instead of 5,000Bt, do you think we would have this story?
