How long can funeral be put off?

When someone dies, how long can the funeral be delayed? This might be a stupid question but where is the body kept until the commencement of the funeral...and how much (approximately) does each day of "storage(?)" cost?

With my limited experience in funerals, the family organise a coffin which has a built in refrigerator and this is kept usually at the family home for grieving family and friends to pay their respects. My wife's late grand father was in the refrigerated coffin for around 4 days prior to his funeral. This unit is ackually a freezer so the body can be kept for a long period of time. You just need to rent the unit.

Thanks AliasJohn. So is the keeping of the body in the refrigerated coffin part of the funeral or is the body kept there until the funeral starts?

Some families op for a 9 day mourning period so hence the refrigerated coffin. If it's only the usual 4 days it may not be necessary. The refrigeration part is not a part of the funeral only to preserve the body. Also if there is a legal reason such as a suspicious death and police are involved it is kept this way. The family usually decorate the coffin with lights and photos of the deceased. You wouldn't know it's a refrigerated unit as it looks like a Thai coffin.

Our village bought a community body freezer that anyone can use in these circumstances.

Not sure if it's lent out to be used at the grieving family's house, or if the freezer stays in the same location and the body is put in there until the funeral?

I don't know if that's common or not, but it might be worth asking about.
