A 12-year-old boy was killed and a 10-year-old boy injured after playing with a UXO in Battambang province’s Ratanak Mondul district yesterday morning. Sorn Nil, district chief, said the boys were digging for crabs in rice fields in Thmey village before the fatal accident happened.

 

Thmey village was a former frontline between the government and the Khmer Rouge in the 1980s. While digging for crabs, they found an anti-personal mine, rockets, and a 80mm bullet for a machine gun.

 

They threw the explosive device on the ground, causing it to detonate instantly. “The boy who threw the UXO was severely injured in his chest and stomach, while his friend suffered superficial injuries to his legs,” Mr Nil said.
