"Buddhist Era" is also the Thai calendar... So look for a date format, time or place setting that is Thai and change it to English...

Did you try:

Settings - Language and Region - Calendar = Gregorian

and..

Settings>General>International>Calendar

Are the Buddhist Era dates are showing up in just 3rd-party apps (whose settings might be independent of the system settings), or in the the iOS system and apple apps?

The latter.

Yes. Settings - General - Language and Region - Calendar = Gregorian

but irritatingly still showing Buddhist Era years in for example Google news.Maybe it's a Google issue but can't see where one would adjust in Google settings.

That's why I asked if this was 3rd-party.  Google's environment is considered 3rd party, even if you open the site in Safari.

If using SAFARI Browser, open google.com/ncr

make sure the "Google offered in: [language]", located below the search field, is set to ENGLISH

select "Settings -> Search Settings" link at the bottom of the page

under the Google Search setting of "Region for Search Results ?" select your preferred region (ie: United Kingdom, or United States) so the results returned will be formatted for that region.

GOOGLE will store these preferences as a cookie setting and use them when you are on most Google-associated sites.  If you clear the cookie you'll need to set up the preference for the region again to get the desired regional settings as part of google search results.
