The Tourism Authority of Thailand says this year’s Chinese New Year celebration will generate no less than 20 billion baht from local and foreign tourists visiting the country to celebrate the events held in 12 old Chinese communities in Bangkok and the provinces.

This was disclosed by TAT deputy governor Santi Chutintara yesterday after announcing joint celebrations of the Chinese New Year with China.

Both Mr Santi and Ms Lan Suhong from the Cultural Attache with the Chinese Consulate in Thailand chaired a press conference to announce the joint celebration to mark the 43rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Surprise, its not about showing what nice places to visit or things to do. Its all about MONEY! How much we can grab for no value in return.

sure, to the hospitality industry this is a high point in the high season;

to the rest of us, that live in 'tourist areas', it is a low point; we just want them gone

Fleece

How does that work? Is he saying so many tourists will be coming just for that, that they will spend 20 billion baht? How does he know how much tourists spend to give a definite figure?

Why would anyone come to LOS for such, when other countries do far better celebrations? Up in Chiang Mai, I have no idea what they will be doing, other than probably a parade or something in the small Chinatown area.

Couple of places with Chinese lanterns hanging, but otherwise nothing. Even the big mall had zero advertising, and don't appear to be doing anything.

Given that city hall did ZERO for the calendar new year, why would anyone expect them to do more for Chinese N Y?

Exactly. Try getting a flight from BKK back to Samui!
